Outstanding stallion Vercingetorix continued his domination of Bloodstock South Africa auctions this year when he provided the top lot sold at the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale. The Maine Chance Farms consigned filly Lucrative (Lot 235) was knocked down to Jane Thomas for R1 400 000 on the second and final day of the August Sale.

Out of the winning Querari mare La Collossa, Lucrative’s third dam is German champion La Colorada, whose nine winners included former German Horse Of The Year and champion sire Lomitas. The latter also ranks as the sire of multiple champion South African sire Silvano, sire of Vercingetorix himself.

Earlier this year, Vercingetorix topped the Sires table at the National Yearling Sale, and was responsible for the sales topping colt at the KZN Yearling Sale.

The champion, and former National Yearling Sale graduate, was the Leading Sire, by Aggregate, at the August Sale, where Vercingetorix sired two-year-old’s grossed R7 300 000 and averaged R608 333.

Another outstanding sire Gimmethegreenlight supplied the auction’s top priced filly, with the Boland Stud consigned filly (Lot 223) sold to Jane Thomas for R1 300 000. Bred on the very successful Gimmethegreenlight/Jet Master cross, the filly, who is out of the Jet Master mare Jet Princess, is a half-sister to two winners including G3 Magnolia Handicap runner up Dancing Queen (by Mambo In Seattle).

Following the general trend of strong prices and a solid middle market which has been felt in South Africa this year, the August Two Year Old Sale showed marked increases in both aggregate and average, while just 12 horses failed to find new homes at the sale.

The aggregate rose from R48 975 000 in 2023 to R59 690 000 this year, with the average increasing from R220 608 to R244 631, and the median rose accordingly from R140 000 to R160 000.

Wilgerbosdrift had an outstanding sale and consigned both the third and joint fourth top priced colts at the August Two Year Old Sale this year. The Piketberg farm ended up as Leading Vendor with Wilgerbosdrift selling 15 lots for R8 410 000, with their two-year-old’s making up to R1 200 000.

Triple 8 Clothing was the Leading Buyer at the sale, purchasing 10 two-year-old’s for R5 930 000, including the Wilgerbosdrift consigned Erupt colt Corrupt (Lot 241) for R1 200 000.
