The KZN Trainers Championship will be an enthralling sideshow in the Hollywoodbets Greyville poly meeting tomorrow with just one win separating the leader Gareth van Zyl and second-placed Alyson Wright.
In the event of a tie there will not be a count out and instead the two yards will share the title.
Gareth admitted last week, “Last year I did not pay attention to the championship, but this year I have made more of a deliberate effort and have brought some horses back from Cape Town and I have been a little more deliberate about it in the last two weeks.”
The effort showed as Gareth had a treble in two of the last three meetings in KZN to roar from five wins behind to a one win lead.
The Wrights have said it would be a title they would very much like to win, but were not overly confident of holding on when hitting the front two or three months ago, citing a lack of numbers.
In tomorrow’s meeting Gareth has nine runners; one runner in races two and three (15/10 favourite and 7/2), three runners in race four (7/2, 5/1 and 25/2), one runner in race six (5/1), two runners in race seven (both 14/1) and one runner in race eight (6/1).
The Wrights have six runners and one reserve; one runner (5/1) and one reserve in race five, one runner in race six (11/2), two runners in race seven (9/2 and 10/1) and two runners in race eight (6/1 and 10/1).
