Sandringham Summit vs Main Defender has the potential to become a great rivalry but frustratingly for racing fans their long awaited clash in the Gr 2 WSB Gauteng Guineas will not happen because Main Defender was among the scratchings at declaration stage.
They have clashed twice to date, with Sandringham Summit beating Main Defender by 2,40 lengths in the Gr 1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes over 1600m and Main Defender exacting revenge by a short-head in the Gr 3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes over 1400m, although he was receiving 1kg from main Defender in that race.
They were set to clash recently in the Gr 3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes over 1400m, but the meeting was postponed and the race re-opened and trainer David Nieuwenhuizen scratched Sandringham Summit, believing the Gauteng Guineas three weeks later was too close.
Nevertheless, Sandringham Summit won’t have it all his own way on Saturday.
The Gr 2 Jonsson Workwear Dingaans one-two Purple Pitcher and Gimmeanotherchance are among the entries.
They both beat Sandringham Summit in that Dingaans, but the race did not pan out at all well for Sandringham Summit and from a better draw this time he could exact revenge.
Purple Pitcher did extract an amazing late burst in that race to get up by a quarter-of-a-length from the front-running Gimmeanotherchance. Purple Pitcher has won all five of the starts he has had for the Robyn Klaasen yard. However, he does have to jump from a tough draw of ten.
Tony Peter will not be empty-handed in the race , because he runs a newcomer to his yard, the exciting William Longsword colt William Iron Arm. This William Longsword colt is owned by Bavarian Beauty’s owners The Playgate SA and he endede his juvenile career with two eyecatching victories over 1600m and 1700m respectively. Out of a Galielo mare, he has a big stride and looks full of class, but has not run for seven months and is probably ideally suited to further. Nevertheless, he has been installed as 4/1 second favourite with the sponsor, with Sandringham Summit favourite at 13/10.
Peter also runs the hardknocket House Of Romanov, who disappointed last time and stable jockey Calvin Habib is aboard William Iron Arm.
Flower Alley colt Mondial is another progressive type who faces an acid test, although he also looks suited to further than a mile.
The Sean Tarry-trained Gimmethegreenlight gelding Storm Brasco is merit rated only 91, but he flew at the finish last time and lost by a shorthead to the talented and inbeaten Taegan’s Champ. He was receiving 3kg in that 1600m Graduation Plate contest but the form was franked when older horse Laguna Verde, who is merit rated 94, came out and won easily next time out. Storm Brasco received 2,5kg from Laguna Verde and beat him by 2,20 lengths.
Tarry also runs The Africa House, who has not been far off Main Defender and Sandringham Summit.
There is only one out of province runner, the Robbie Hill-trained Summerveld-based Navajo Nation, who has a tough task.
