Keagan de Melo leads the jockeys competition in the Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge 2022, Michael Roberts and Kumaran Naidoo lead the trainers competition, while Rachel Venniker is in front in the apprentices competition.

R1 million in prize money will be split between jockeys, trainers apprentices and horses.

The horses’ prize money will go to the owners.

The competition runs until 30 December.

Probably the most important factor in the trainers competition is number of runners as points are gathered simply by a reverse of the finishing position i.e. if there are ten runners and a horse finishes first it gathers ten points for the trainer and second place gathers nine points etc.

If a trainer has two runners in a ten horse field that finish for example fifth and sixth they will gather eleven points, which is more than the ten points a trainer with a single runner will get for winning it.

Therefore, Garth Puller should be the favourite to win the competition again (he won it the last time they ran it.)

A quick look at the statistics for the season to date shows that Puller has had comfortably the most runners in KZN this season on 169, with Kumaran Naidoo having had 142, Michael Roberts 99 and Wendy Whitehead and Lorenzo Karriem 90 each.

However, there is also a separate prize for the trainer who scores the most points per runner during the competition.

Hollywoodbets did price up on the trainers and jockeys competitions the last time they ran it, but there are no books on this competition so far.
