Glen Kotzen intends targeting the progressive Gimmethegreenlight gelding Green Mandarin at the Listed Algoa Cup over 2000m at Fairview on October 25.
It is no mean feat for a four-year-old to win three successive handicap races in the strong centre of Cape Town, but that is what Green Mandarin has achieved, with the last of them being a comfortable 1,25 length win over 1800m on Tuesday under JP van der Merwe.
Glen said, “He’s only getting better as he gets older. As a four-year-old he has matured. We gave him most of his three-year-old career off and just played with him in the paddock, just let him mature. He was always a light-framed boy. I don’t think the Gimmes have to be very big to be very good. But he did hold his condition as a three-year-old and is holding it now. It is amazing how he has come on.”
Green Mandarin was bred by Andy William’s World Wide Bloodstock.
He is out of a Galileo mare, so it is not surprising he has taken a bit of time to blossom.
Glen bought him on spec at the BSA National Yearling Sale for R400,000 and put a partnership together.
Messrs Asogan Govender, S Poriazis & F Vahab are the current owners.
