Muzi Yeni has had a fine opening week of the new season and leads the national log with ten winners.

In the process he rode the 2000th win of his career.

Yeni has not had any singles in five meetings this season.

He scored a blank at the first meeting he rode in last Wednesday at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

He opened his season’s account with a double at the Vaal Classic track on Thursday.

He then rode a treble at the opening Global Team Horse Racing (GTH) meeting on the Hollywoodbets Greyville turf on Friday night.

He then had a treble at Turffontein Standside on Saturday and a double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville yesterday.

Yeni clinched the 2000th winner of his career on the Glen Kotzen-trained Canford Cliffs filly Feeling Groovy in a 1600m maiden on Friday night.

Yeni is captain of the Kwazulu Royals team in the GTH series and in their eight race battle against the Gauteng Gijimaz on Friday night he led from the front, riding three winners. That helped the Royals to come away with 452 points in a thrilling contest, which saw the Gijimaz narrowly defeated on 448 points.

However, in the long run Yeni’s double at the Vaal Classic track on Thursday coupled with his treble at Turffontein on Saturday might just be the five winners that define his season.

All five of them were for the newly crowned SA Champion trainer Paul Peter.

A move to New Zealand seems imminent for Warren Kennedy, who was stable jockey to Peter last season and it helped him win a second national jockeys championship with ease.

A number of jockeys will want to get a shoe firmly in the door of the Peter yard and Yeni is going about it the right way.

Could this be the season where Yeni’s famous commitment and hard work finally reward him with a dream national championship?
