Punters limbering up before the big betting opportunity next Saturday on SplashOut Cape Derby Day may choose to focus on emerging young talents on Monday’s program at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

Developing three-year-olds are apt to make surges of improvement and Noble City, Montien, Rosh Kedesh and Marshall Field, are youngsters with sufficient potential to take the fight to older foes.

Montien has been held in high esteem from day one by trainer Piet Botha, but injuries caused delays to original race-plans. Now that the son of Louis the King is restored to full health, he is belatedly making an impact. Last time he dashed home energetically from too far back, and though stepping up in class, the lightweight looks progressive enough to mount a bold bid in Race 5, an otherwise tightly clustered MR 90 handicap over 1800m.

Noble City received inspired market support on debut and swooped by full of running to land the gamble impressively. Jockey Richard Fourie sticks solid on Peter Muscutt’s charge, and they can go in again in Race 8, an MR 80 event. The form has a nice shape to it as both the second (Kebonalesedi) and third (Rosh Kedesh) have won their follow up’s.

The last named could also be good enough to land the preceding event. A handsome Vercingetorix colt out of Fort Wood mare, Rosh Kedesh is bred to love the longer route (1600m) where he faces mid-level, three-year-old contemporaries, and a solitary older stalwart in Paper Trail. Dean Kannemeyer reports the classy looker is “doing well” ahead of Monday’s challenge.

Marshall Field’s form is superficially dim – clocking in 9th, 5th and 8th at his three starts to date. Yet he made swift headway from dead last three weeks ago over 1400m, recording notably sharp closing sectionals off a good pace. The extra 400m of Race 4 will work in this son of Ideal World’s favour with the services of world class jock, Fourie another positive.

Madison Blues (due a change of luck) and Elegant Noble also have legit claims here and are respected for sharp connections.

An each way touch on Marshall Field could prove nourishing.
