Moana is being eased at the line (JC Photos)
The Robyn Klaasen-trained three-year-old New Predator filly had to carry 59kg off a 102 merit rating in a MR 90 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m at the Vaal Classic track and it was her first start of the season too, but in the end she won easing up by 1,20 lengths under Calvin Habib.
She showed the hallmark of a good horse in that she showed a good turn of foot when asked the question from a midfield position in the seven horse field, but when it later turned into a duel between her and Jack’s Legacy she found another gear and pulled away.
She has a big white face, so is unmistakeable and she should make an impact on the three-year-old features, inlcuding the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara races.
She is out of a Singspiel mare and strikes as one who will need a bit of ground.
Robyn confirmed the mile was on the sharp side for her and said she thought she would get better as she went further.
She said she had gone easy on her into this race and believed she was only at about 60% fitness which augurs well for an exciting season for owners Trevelen Pillay, Joshua Peter and S Mathen.
Robyn confirmed the Triple Taira would be the main long term target for Moana.
The filly was bred by Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and was purchased by Klaasen for just R150,000 at the BSA National Yearling Sale last year.
