Gimme A Nother wins the Gr 3 Betway Fillies Mile in comfortable style (4 Racing)
There will have been few more appropriate results in SA racing history if the Mike de Kock-trained Mauritzfontein Stud homebred Gimmethegreenlight filly Gimme A Nother manages to win Sunday’s Gr 2 Mike de Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge over 1600m at Turffontein Standside.
Read until the end to discover the amazing number of reasons why that would be such a fitting result.
De Kock’s name appears in the name of the race for the first time this year.
He thoroughly deserves that accolade and there could hardly be a more fitting race to carry the name.
Of course the race is not only named after the trainer but also after the greatest filly he ever trained, Ipi Tombe. This Zimbabwean-bred daughter of Manshood was purchased at the Zimbabwe yearling sales for the equaivalent of U$30 and went on to win three Gr 1s for De Kock in South Africa, including the July, before going unbeaten in three starts in Dubai including the Gr 1 Dubai Duty Free, which earned her the title of best filly in the world. She was later sold for 850,000 Gns when in foal to Sadler’s Wells.
The unbeaten De Kock-trained filly Gimme A Nother also has a great story behind her and De Kock and the Ipi Tombe Challenge are also very much part of that fairytale.
Gimme Another’s multiple Gr 1-winning grandmother Mother Russia was bought in training by Mary Slack and sent to De Kock at the beginning of the 2009/2010 season.
Mother Russia’s first win for De Kock was actually in the Ipi Tombe Challenge.
She went on to add the Gr 1 Paddock Stakes, the Gr 1 Empress Club Stakes and the Gr 1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate for De Kock to add to the Gr 1 Majorca Stakes she had won for Joey Ramsden.
However, Mother Russia was destined to have only one foal, a Tiger Ridge filly who was named Nother Russia in her honour.
Nother Russia was naturally sent to De Kock to be trained.
She went on to win the Gr 1 Empress Club Stakes twice and she also won the Ipi Tombe among other wins.
Nother Russia’s second foal is Gimme A Nother.
She has won three from three for De Kock, including winning the Gr 3 Betway Fillies Mile last time out.
On Sunday she will attempt to repeat the feat of both her mother and grandmother by winning the Ipi Tombe, with all three of them having been trained by the man after who the race is now also named.
Gimme A Nother is drawn three but faces one of the strongest fields this race has ever had.
Bavarian Beauty, Feather Boa, Emirate Gina, Silver Hills and possibly Winter Greeting , but for one disappointing effort last time out, are class packages and progressive too, while Marigold Hotel has class and has a definite form chance.
Of the other two in the nine horse field Humdinger has class, but prefers 1400m, while My Lady Soul looks well held by Gimme A Nother.
It should be a humdinger and De Kock and Mauritzfonetin proprietors and staff will be hoping for a fairytale result.
