Main Defender will be out to make it three feature wins from three starts this season when running in the rescheduled and reopened Gr 3 Got The Greenlight Stakes over 1400m (Picture: JC Photos)
There are three rescheduled and reopened features at Turffontein Standside tomorrow (Saturday), although unfortunately the long-awaited rematch between Main Defender and Sandringham Summit will not happen as the latter’s trainer David Nieuwenhuizen believes tomorrow’s Gr 3 Got The Greenlight Stakes is too close to the Gr 2 WSB Gauteng Guineas.
However, Main Defender will not have it all his own way in the Got The Greenlight Stakes over 1400m, because Mike de Kock has entered the star gelding Gimmeanotherchance and also the exciting, unbeaten filly Champagne Cocktail.
Main Defender has a tricky draw of eight to overcome, but has fine gatespeed, relaxes in the running and has an exceptional turn of foot. He will be difficult to beat despite having to carry a 2kg penalty. Champagne Cocktail gets a 2,5kg gender allowance, which means she receives 4,5kg from Main Defender. She won from the front last time out and a fair draw of four out of nine will give her a chance to try and lead again. However, that race was over 1800m and this trip of 1400m might be a touch sharp for the tall big-striding Silvano filly. Gimmeanotherchance was beaten 3,25 lengths over course and distance by Main Defender in the Gr 3 Betway Graham Beck Stakes and now they meet on the same terms. However, Gimmeanotherchance has a lot of class which he proved when only just caught in the Gr 2 Jonsson Workwear Dingaans over 1600m last time out. He has a wide draw of seven to overcome but is able to dictate in front or settle well off the pace. He has a good turn of foot which he used to try and steal it from the front in the Dingaans. Craig Zackey rides in Cape Town on the day so is replaced by the capable Diego Degouveia, who is unlikely to let Main Defender get too far ahead as happened in the Graham Beck. The Africa House should be running on and this progressive horse can make the frame. Princeofgreen beat Wyzeact by 1,60 lengths over 1450m last time out and although now 4,5kg worse off he looks progressive. Barbaresco is well bred being a Gimmethegreenlight full brother to Outofthedarkness, who finished a narrow second in this race two years ago to William Robertson. Hotarubi has shown glimpses of class but looks up against it here. Royal Edition looks well held on formlines.
Main Defender is taken to beat Gimmeanotherchance with Champagne Cocktail, The Africa House and Princeofgreen next best.
In the Gr 3 Mother Russia Stakes over 1400m Mother Pearl could give Danon Platina, a Japan-bred stallion by the legendary Deep Impact, his long awaited first black type winner. She has finished second to Mrs Geriatrix, Egyptian Mau and Gimme A Nother in her last three starts from 1400m up to 1600m and off a 109 is merit rated nine points higher than any other runner. Furthermore, she is drawn in pole position. The Mike de Kock-trained filly will be ridden by Gavin Lerena. The promising Lucky Houdalakis-trained What A Winter filly Elegant Ice has only ever run beyond sprints once and finished last in the Gr 2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Greyville. However, she is in good sprint form and on pedigree she should get this trip. A good draw of two helps. Houdalakis also runs the promising Lady Fallon, who showed a fine turn of foot from last place when winning over 1600m last time out. She is drawn eight but should be running on strongly late. Mary’s Greenlight is a progressive sort who has won three of her last four, from 1400m to 1600m and she is better than her 6,50 length defeat to Lady Fallon, where she had no cover throughout down the Vaal straight. Another De Kock runner Woman Of Power has not been tried beyond sprints but has an impressive stride and being by Vercingetorix out of a Fort Wood mare who won on debut over 1450m she should enjoy this trip. She is in fact a dark horse, although she does have a tough draw of ten. Betula, also by Danon Platina, won the BSA Sales Cup over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Hollywoodbets Durban July day. However, she has nine lengths to find on White Pearl on recent 1600m form and 5,5 lengths to find on her on 1450m form. Let’s Go Now is coming into her own and was only a short-head behind White Pearl in the Gr 3 Fillies Mile. Mia Moo won by 4,25 lengths second time out over 1160m and should get this trip on pedigree. Garlandsofgreenery has run two good sprints and should also appreciate the step up in trip. Key Element has 2,25 lengths to find on White Pearl from the Fillies Mile.
White Pearl is taken to beat Elegant Ice with Lady Fallon, Mary’s Greenlight and Woman Of Power next best, but if White Pearl is not bankered punters will have to go wide in this leg.
In the Listed Betway Wolf Power Handicap over 1600m Silent War should take a power of beating. In the Grand Heritage the inside horses unexpectedly kept rolling. He had tracked over from the inside and his run came too late. In retropsect he would likely have stuck to his station. He is distance suited and has a fine turn of foot. Shoemaker looks to be coming into his own and could be a threat. Those two could be followed home by Silver Hills, who should finish strongly, Hoedspruit who should be yet another former Cape horse who does well in the Peter yard, and Pyromaniac, who can deliver a strong finish if it pans out well for him from a tricky draw of six.
It should be an intriguing day of racing and well worth a visit to the racecourse. There are 12 races in all and tihe action starts at 11H15.
