Danny Shum smiles after scoring a treble that put him back in the championship lead (HKJC)

Lyle Hewitson had gone eight meetings without a winner before his win on Saturday on Bling Bling Genius, who is a half-brother to South African-based Snitzel sire The Real Gone Kid.

He only had two rides at today’s (Wednesday’s) Happy Valley meeting and scored another win.

His win today was board the Danny Shum-trained three-year-old D’Argento gelding Leading Agility.

Leading Agility got a fair break in the Class 4 event over 1200m and was driven by Hewitson to maintain a handy position. He went around the turn on the quarters of the leader and then kicked well to hit the front at the 200m mark.

He found enough extra to go to the line a 1,5 length winner.

He paid a Tote win dividend of 6.7.

It was the three-year-old’s sixth career start and first win, having previously had a third on debut and two fourths.

The win gave trainer Danny Shum a treble for the night and it put him in the lead in what is turning out to be a thrilling trainers championship.

With 17 meetings left in the season, Shum sits on top with 54 wins from Newnham (52), Fownes (51), David Hayes (48), Francis Lui (47) and John Size (45).

Hewitson is now on 25 wins for the season.
