1 11H10 – World Sports Betting 400m Dash
The start of KwaZulu-Natal’s Champions Season and some of the best racehorses in the country will be in action so don’t miss out. The first is a 400m dash and is always fun seeing them jump and go. FAUSTINO won this race last year and has drawn well again so should give a good account of himself. But RENAISSANCE MAN, the horse who beat subsequent Computaform Sprint winner Isivunguvungu, is usually difficult to catch and is the one to beat. However, IPHIKO who also doesn’t like being headed, is best weighted and RENAISSANCE MAN may have his work cut out if she is at her best after a rest.
Top Tip: FAUSTINO (2)
Watch out for: IPHIKO (6)
2 11H40 – Bonamanzi Maiden Juvenile Plate
THISISWHATITMEANS turned in a promising debut for the Hollywood syndicate. He met some decent sorts and with improvement to come should be the one. However he has drawn a bit wide and he meets unexposed sorts. Highveld raider DR FAUSTUS ran a fair race on debut finishing fourth in a race with winners. He should appreciate the track and trip on pedigree. CANFORD ICE made good improvement when trying extra and may be the value option with track experience. JURY’S OUT and WINTER GAMES both need to be considered for exotics. First timers to watch out for as well.
Top Tip: MORNING CHESS (2)
Watch out for: DR FAUSTUS (3)
3 12H15 – Independent On Saturday Then And Now Maiden Juvenile Plate
LINKIN NAVIGATOR has been consistent on the Highveld and more importantly has run well in both tries around the bend on the Turffontein Inside track. He could take advantage in a race low on form. PROFESSOR LUPIN came in for betting support on debut and after not getting the best of starts had work to do to get into the race. He made progress to take fourth place and could show much more with the run under his belt. Both COSMIC RHYTHM and RAF’S ROCKET are expected to run well by their respective trainers and the pair are bred in the purple. Follow the betting moves on all first-timers.
Top Tip: COSMIC RHYTHM (3)
Watch out for: PROFESSOR LUPIN (4)
4 12H50 – Independent On Saturday Personal Finance Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies)
If SIGN OF FATE had drawn better she would have been hard to beat. As it stands she could get luck in running and get the job done. She is by Master Of My Fate and should relish the extra distance. Highveld-based filly MISS SHAIVI was close up to Soldier’s Eye over 1450m and so is proven and the latter has come out to win again since. She also wasn’t disgraced when dropping in distance last time and from gate No 1 should have every chance. BITCOIN BABY should relish the extra and further in time. She hasn’t done badly and should be right there. More can show over this longer trip.
Top Tip: MISS SHAIVI (1)
Watch out for: BITCOIN BABY (2)
5 13H25 – Independent On Saturday Sports Maiden Plate (F & M)
SHE CAN was supported in her runs against juveniles. She hasn’t done badly and could prefer the return to the Hollywoodbets Greyville track. WHAT NOW MY GAL makes her local debut for the Harold Crawford/Michele Rix trainer combination and her form in the Western Cape is fair. She could make a winning local debut. JADE’S CABERNEIGH is coming along steadily and found only one better last time out. She should be right there. WHEN EVENING COMES can only improve as she has only had two starts so far. Follow the action on the first-timers before making a final assessment.
Top Tip: WHAT NOW MY GAL (2)
Watch out for: JADE’S CABERNEIGH (3)
6 14H05 – Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes (Grade 2)
A great field for the feature that raises the curtain on KwaZulu-Natal’s Champions Season. L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner AL MUTHANA sets the standard as the highest rated horse and he has won a Grade 1 at this venue as has last season’s leading three-year-old male SAFE PASSAGE, but both may be prepping. However, both race fresh along with SEEKING THE STARS and GIMME A PRINCE any could be dangerous. WILLIAM ROBERTSON has much in his favour and if the race is run to suit could score. DESERT MIRACLE was amazing over this trip earlier – watch out. SILVANO’S DASHER and TRIP OF FORTUNE must be respected.
Top Tip: WILLIAM ROBERTSON (1)
Watch out for: DESERT MIRACLE (3)
7 14H43 – World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas (Grade 2) (3 Year-Old Fillies)
LADY OF POWER will be looking to add the World Sports Betting Fillies Guineas to her Gauteng Fillies Guineas win but she is dropping in distance having run 3rd in the 2450m SA Oaks. But the highest rated runner in the level-weights Grade 2 is GOLDEN HOSTESS, who has run well at this venue. She won well after a rest and having matured should go the distance. HOLD MY HAND must be right there on collateral form but along with Cape Oaks winner SAARTJIE is dropping in distance. The latter could be anything along with SHANTASTIC, who impressed on track debut.
Top Tip: SAARTJIE (3)
Watch out for: LADY OF POWER (4)
8 15H21 – World Sports Betting Guineas (Grade 2) (3 Year-Olds)
If this is the start of things to come, it is going to be a great champions season in KwaZulu-Natal. This is a Grade 2 but with CHARLES DICKENS, who won the Grade 1 Cape Guineas beating fellow Grade 1 winner and re-opposing COUSIN CASEY, as well as Grade 1 SA Classic winner ANFIELDS ROCKET and Grade 1 Cape Derby winner SEE IT AGAIN, it could be the race of the season! COUSIN CASEY has a great record at this venue but CHARLES DICKENS appears a super miler and could come up trumps. ANFIELDS ROCKET and SEE IT AGAIN need to be taken seriously. MELECH, DAVE THE KING and AT MY COMMAND can threaten.
Top Tip: SEE IT AGAIN (2)
Watch out for: COUSIN CASEY (6)
9 16H00 – Independent On Saturday Arts & Pleasure Fm 84 Handicap (F & M)
OUR EMILY has draw No 1 and could make it five in a row. She is enjoying racing, winning even though up in level last time, and has won on poly and turf. BONNE BOUCHE is quick and has been unlucky not to add to her tally up the straight. She could be the one to catch this time. ANCIENT EPIC came back to best to add a Listed feature to her tally and she could follow up if in the same mood. STING RAY has been running on well in the closing stages and just needs things to go her way to get the timing right. MAQUETTE and ISN’T SHE BONNY are in top form and could threaten.
Top Tip: OUR EMILY (1)
Watch out for: BONNE BOUCHE (2)

10 16H35 – Independent On Saturday Mr 80 Handicap
TIRPITZ has decent Highveld form and even though a bit costly to follow could be rewarded on local debut. He can race handily so should be suited to the track and has drawn neatly in gate No 2. BEYONDTHEBOUNDARY has matured and wasn’t disgraced over 1800m on the poly so could be effective over 1600m. He has drawn No 1 with Piere Strydom up and could fight it out with Kabelo Matsunyane aboard TIRPITZ. Many with chances past these in a wide-open event. The Garth Puller coupling of FINE ADMIRAL and AFRICAN DUSK could threaten along with TIME TAKER. More can improve but some have drawn wide.
Top Tip: BEYONDTHEBOUNDARY (1)
Watch out for: TIRPITZ (2)
