The twice Gr 1-winning sprinter Gimme A Prince will not be ready in time to defend his crown in the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship on WSB Met day.
Trainer Dean Kannemeyer said Gimme A Prince might be back for the Gr 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes on Gr 1 Splashout Cape Derby day on 24 February.
Kannemeyer had intended a different route for him this season.
It started superbly as he ran superstar Charles Dickens to 0,30 lengths in the Gr 3 Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes over 1400m.
However, he then had setbacks which forced him to miss his next two intended runs, the Gr 2 WSB Green Point Stakes and Saturday’s Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate.
Kannemeyer said, “If all goes well we will bring him back for the Diadem, but if that does not work we will bring him back in the Champions Season. He won the Golden Horse Sprint with topweight last year anyway. He is a top horse and I don’t want to cut any corners with him.”
