Multiple SA champion jockey Gavin Lerena was due to visit a specialist on Friday after it was confirmed that he had suffered a fracture in his left foot after being dislodged prior to the first race at the Vaal on Tuesday, writes The Sporting Post.
His mount Blunderbore reared en route to the start of the opening race at the Vaal, dislodging the Hollywood Racing rider.
After being attended to by paramedics and transferred to the medical centre for attention, Lerena was stood down for the rest of the racemeeting.
He had x-rays on Wednesday afternoon and will now see a specialist on Friday.
It has been an unfortunate year at the Vaal for Lerena who fractured his calcaneus and tore the calcaneonavicular ligament at the course on 31 March when his mount sadly broke down.
That injury landed up costing Lerena the ride on the Graham Motion-trained One Stripe in the Gr1 Maker’s Mark Mile, which was run at Keeneland the following week. One Stripe was narrowly beaten by Zulu Kingdom.
The 2024/25 SA champion enjoys a top 5 position on the national log with 20 winners at a win strike-rate of 17,1%.
He will hopefully be back in time ahead of the Cape summer season and the Highveld season build-up into the Betway Gr1 Summer Cup.
