Previous winner comments:

Don was a previous winner of the Emperor’s Palace Ride Of The Month competition and had this to say: “Thank you very much for the excellent and professional arrangement for our stay at Graceland . The cold weather and nippy wind did not stop us from having an awesome round of golf  and we thoroughly enjoyed and supported all the inhouse facilities.”

Nominees for the Emperor’s Palace Ride Of The Month for June:

1 S’Manga Khumalo , Quid Pro Quo, Hollywoodbets Scottsville, Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship 1200m
Khumalo was aware of the pitfalls of draw one, especially on a hold up horse like Quid Pro Quo, who was likely going to have an impossible wall of traffic to get through if she held her inside station. He waited for the forward runners on his side to get ahead of him before shifting outward into the middle. Even then it took a long while for a gap to open but importantly he did get a clear run in the end she was good enough to win the race, while the favourite who stuck to the inside was hopelessly boxed in until it was tooo late.
2 Raymond Danielson, October Morn, 01 June Hollywoodbets Scottsville, Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint 1200m
Danielson had a low draw of four so placed October Morn in a more handy position than normal, knowing there would likely be traffic problems later on in the race when the wider draw horses moved accross. He took the opportunity at the 400m mark to drive for a gap that had presented itself on the inside and got through it in the nick of time. He drove the horse out with minimal use of the whip and the underrated rider had another Gr 1 win under the belt.
3 Richard Fourie, Lucky Lad, 01 June Hollywoobets Scottsville, Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint 1200m
Fourie was always going to have a problem from draw eleven as Lucky Lad likes to come from off them and the outside horses tend to drift inward. He duly found himself with a wall of horses in front of him but knew what was underneath him so took the equation of luck out of it by shifting outward until there was space on the outside of the horses who were shifting the other way. Fourie has said in the past riding this horse one has to keep on persisting because he will eventually take off and that was exactly what Lucky Lad did and in exhilarating fashion too.
4 Craig Zackey, Red Maple, 15 June Hollywoodbets Greyville, Gr 2 Tabgold Oaks 2400m
Red Maple was squeezed out early, so Zackey decided to drop her to the back and relax her. He bided his time all the way to the straight and he had clearly reserved her fuel beautifully. He made a wise descision after initially going around them at the top of the straight to switch inward, having noticed horses ahead drifting towards the outside, and this allowed him to burst through the middle to just get up.
5 Corne Orffer, Pineapplemintgreen, Fairview, 28 June Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes 1200m
Orffer relaxed his mount from the off from draw three and she was near the back at the halfway mark. However, he knew all about her fine turn of foot and after making up some ground between the 600m and the 300m mark under the hands he got to work and she got there comfortably to convert 10/1 odds.
