Lot 33: Defence Missile sold for 41,000 guineas to Paul Corrigan (Picture: Tattersalls)
Promising two-year-old colt DEFENCE MISSILE topped the Tattersalls Online September Sale after realising 41,000 guineas to regular purchaser on the platform Paul Corrigan.
A son of first season sire SOTTSASS, DEFENCE MISSILE finished second on debut behind subsequent Group race performer MR CHAPLIN before running with credit in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and in his three starts since. The Dullingham Park consigned colt was offered with an official rating of 78.
Speaking after the sale, Paul Corrigan commented: “Sam (Haggas, Bloodstock Agent) said the time of his run at Salisbury was pretty quick so he could be rated higher than he is. I spoke to Eve, the trainer, and she didn’t want to lose him and he looks like he’ll be better as a three-year-old from his pedigree. He’ll go to Linda Perret and I’ll try to get a run into him with cut in the ground in October, before gelding him and putting him away for the winter.”
A familiar name on the purchasers’ ledger for Tattersalls Online sales, Paul added: “I like the thrill of an auction and if you can get a bit of value – all the better!”
A horse consigned by Roger Varian’s Carlburg Stables is a regular sight at the top of the results table for Tattersalls Online sales and once again the Newmarket-based handler was responsible for another leading lot when MIGHTY NEBULA fetched 35,000 guineas to Kuwait-based Mohammad Al Owaimar. The consistent four-year-old son of SAXON WARRIOR won a maiden at Kempton in April and has held his form since then, most recently finishing fifth in a Class 3 Handicap at Southwell last month.
Also finding favour were the dual purpose performer MALBAY MADNESS, who was offered by Emmet Mullins’ Friars Lough Stables and knocked down for 20,000 guineas to Alan Smith, and the Sangster Racing consigned two-year-old filly STIORRA who realised 18,500 guineas to R Michael.
At the head of the yearlings offered in the sale was a filly by freshman sire STARMAN who fetched 14,500 guineas to Green Road Bloodstock, whilst another yearling filly by the proven Group 1 sire ARDAD sold for 10,000 guineas to trainer Ed Walker.
The top lot amongst the foals on offer was the Baroda Stud consigned colt by SHOWCASING who fetched 10,000 guineas to Paragon Bloodstock. The April-born colt is out of a half-sister to the Listed runner up THE WHIRLING DERVISH who in turn is out of the Group 3 winner SYNERGY.
The Tattersalls Online September Sale realised a turnover of 386,700 guineas for 70 lots sold, at an average price of 5,524 guineas. Over 320 bidders registered for the sale from over 20 countries including America, Belgium, Britain, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, India, Italy, Germany, Sweden, The Netherlands and from throughout the Gulf region.
