Jan van Goyen’s career has not burgeoned since his emphatic Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas win and having not been seen for over five months he was was one of two scratchings today (Friday) from the Betway Summer Cup (Picture: Wayne Marks)

Two top 20 on the log incumbents, Jan Van Goyen and Reet Petite, have been scratched from the Betway Summer Cup.

The Mike and Mathew de Kock pair have not been seen on a racecourse for a long time with Reet Petite’s last start being in the Gr 1 wfa Maine Chance Farms Majorca Stakes on January 31, where her unplaced finish was the first time in her career she had finished outside the first two, and Jan Van Goyen’s last start was an unplaced run in the Gr 1 Daily News 2000 on May 30.

There are now just 36 horses still standing their ground.

Isivivane and Field Marshall look to be the pair with the best credentials to fill the two places.

Isivivane won the Gr 3 WSB 1900 before finishing a fine 3,20 length fifth in the Gr 1 Hollywodbets Durban July. In three subsequent runs he has been far from disgraced, finishing a 3.05 length tenth in the Listed Tote Stakes Darley Arabian won by Zeitz, a 2,60 length ninth in a Conditions Plate event over 1400m won by the champion filly Quickstepgal and he was a 3,65 length seventh in Saturday’s Gr 2 Allied Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile. That was a particularly eyecatching effort considering he was caught wide without cover the whole way, although on the downside he will be 3,5kg under sufferance carrying bottom weight of 54kg off his 108 merit rating in the Summer Cup as things stand.

Field Marshall has solid Graded race form and since winning the Listed Sledgehammer over 1750m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville in April he has had five starts uincluding finishing a 1,25 length fifth in the Gr 2 TAB Colorado King Stakes over 2000m at Turffontein Standside, a 1,90 fifth in the Gr 3 Betgames Cup Trial over 1800m and a 0,90 length fourth in the Listed Tote Stakes Darley Arabian over 1600m. He has another opportunity to booh his place as he runs in the Gr 3 TAB Victory Moon Stakes over 1800m at Turffontein Standside on Saturday, a race he finished second in last year before finishing second in the Betway Summer Cup Consolation.

Other outside-of-the-top-20 horses who are involved in the Victory Moon are Palace Prince, Legend Of Arthur, Parisian Walkway, Rule By Force and Master Spy.

Those  in the top 20 who are running in the Victory Noon are Olivia’s Way (13th on log) and Drumnadrochit (15th on log).

The final entries for the Betway Summer Cup are on November 16, so a Victory Moon winner who is not currently entered might still be supplemented and make the final field.

Main Defender (rated 126) could be a candidate for that scenario as he did prove when third in the Gr 1 wfa HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m that he can stay middle distances these days.

Diogenes (rated 99) is another staying type who fits the bill and he would get a substantial MR raise if he did the Victory Moon as he is officially 7,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted Drumnadrochit, so entry into the Summer Cup would then not be unrealistic.
