Nick’s Award wins comfortably at Terang last week
The former Gr 1 SA Classic winner Dane Julia fittingly produced a winner in Australia for Matthew de Kock, who trains in partnership with Robbie Griffiths.
Dane Julia was trained by the late great Buddy Maroun and was unbeaten in her first five starts, including the Gr 2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas and  Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic.
Interestingly the daughter of Caesour did not go for the SA Oaks, although this might have been because either the Triple Tiara did not exist that year in 2007 or did not carry a bonus like it does today.
Dane Julia did run on SA Oaks day and suffered her first defeat in the Gr 2 Gerald Rosenberg Stakes against older fillies and mares.
She was later exported to Australia where she was trained by Lee Freedman and won a couple of Listed races in Australia and a Gr1 in New Zealand.
The De Kock and Griffiths-trained Nick’s Award by Shamus Award is Dane Julia’s fifth foal and her fourth winner, although she is yet to produce a stakes winner.
Nick’s Award, a four-year-old gelding, was having only his fourth career run at Terang last week and won the 2150m maiden by 1,30 lengths under Jamie Mott.
