Beach Bomb has draw eleven out of 13 in the Gr 1 Breeders Cup Filly And Mare Turf over a mile and three-eighths (2200m) and Isivunguvungu has drawn ten out of 12 in the Breeders Cup Turf Sprint over five furlongs (1000m).
Beach Bomb is rated a 20/1 shot by The Morning Line odds.
It looks to be an open race with the favourite Cindarella’s Dream rated a 4/1 shot.
Cindarella’s Dream is a Goldolphin horse trained by Charlie Appleby with William Buick up.
She has an electric turn of foot that she displayed when winning the Belmont Oaks over one mile and one-and-a-half furlongs.
Will she get the extra one-and-a-half furlongs though?
Her Giant’s Causeway sire Shamardal won the French Derby over a mile and two-and-a-half furlongs and her dam by Dubawi won over a mile and two furlongs, so she should get the trip.

BF: Listed stakes winner on Del Mar turf at this 1 3/8-mile trip in summer, seems Grade 1 class-deficient |
Isivunguvungu’s ideal draw would have been low and next to the ultra quick Cogburn, because an ideal scenario for him would be following a very quick pace. One of those wishes came true as Cogburn is drawn next to him in nine. However, it will be tough to get a tow from the latter from a high draw because Cogburn is likely to head towards the inside rail if he hits the front and that could leave Isivunguvungu caught wide.
However, in the USA horses running wide doesn’t seem to be as big a factor as it is in SA, because the pace is usually fast and a horse who has fresh air in front of him might be going at comfortable enough a clip to not have to pull.
Steve Anderson wrote about Isivunguvungu on Daily Racing Form and it gave a good perspective on how he has being doing in the USA.
Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint: No matter how you say it, Isivunguvungu is tough and fast
Steve AndersenOct 29, 2024
Isivunguvungu, bred and raced in South Africa, came off a nine-month layoff to win his United States debut in the Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs.
The gelding’s name is a tongue twister. Fortunately, his race record is easier to assess.
Isivunguvungu, a Zulu name for a severe storm, is a South African-bred who won his American debut in the Da Hoss Stakes at Colonial Downs on Sept. 7. The victory has led to his appearance in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar for the Hollywood Syndicate and trainer Graham Motion.
The recent win showed how Isivunguvungu has settled into an American routine after winning 6 of 15 starts, including two Group 1 sprints in South Africa. Since the win in the Da Hoss Stakes, the gelding has reeled off several fast workouts on the synthetic training track at Fair Hills training center in Maryland.
Motion said on Tuesday that Isivunguvungu is so eager to train that he utilizes some of the open spaces at Fair Hills for the gelding’s exercise.
“We train him in the fields because he’s very tough,” Motion said.
Isivunguvungu is just as enthusiastic in his workouts.
“He’s very fast,” Motion said. “He wants to get on with. In the morning, it’s all or nothing.”
In the Da Hoss Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs, Isivunguvungu closed from fourth of eight in the final three furlongs to win by a neck as the 2-1 favorite. In South Africa in 2023, he won 3 of 6 starts at distances ranging from about five furlongs to about six furlongs.
The Da Hoss Stakes was Isivunguvungu’s second start of 2024. He was second in an allowance race on Jan. 6 in South Africa and scratched from a race there later that month (The Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship) after becoming upset in the gate (incorrect – he cut himself on the outside of the gate).
Isivunguvungu spent two months at a quarantine facility in upstate New York before joining Motion’s stable. The recent win will benefit Isivunguvungu, who starts in a tough field that includes the brilliantly fast Cogburn, who is unbeaten in three starts this year.
“The only reason he hasn’t raced more this year is because he’s been stuck in quarantine,” Motion said. “He needed the race and he needed the recovery because he hadn’t run in a while.”
A win by Isivunguvungu in the BC Turf Sprint would be an upset. His presence, though, adds a greater international presence to a lineup that already includes runners from Europe and throughout the United States.
For bettors, there is an easy way to remember Isivunguvungu’s name. He is horse No. 10 in Saturday’s fifth race.
