In a media statement published on Saturday 1 August 2026, the South African Jockey Academy advises that the institution is absolutely thrilled to share the wonderful news that apprentice jockey Bavish Soodoo is finally awake following his race riding incident at Fairview Racecourse.
While Bavish still has a long road to recovery ahead, this marks an incredibly significant milestone, and we could not be more excited to share this positive update.

He continues to receive exceptional care from a dedicated team of medical specialists, and we remain deeply grateful for their expertise and unwavering commitment.
During today’s visit by his sister and brother, Riding Master Rocky Agrella, his mentor Jacques Strydom, Amy Radcliffe and Hettie Kruger, Bavish was able to interact with those around him.
He recognised Jacques and Amy, told them his name and, in a moment that brought tears of joy and plenty of smiles, announced that he was hungry and wanted KFC. It was a beautiful reminder of the determined young man we all know and love.
Bavish is a much-loved member of the South African Jockey Academy family and a remarkable young athlete. Throughout his apprenticeship, he has demonstrated courage, determination and humility, and these qualities continue to inspire everyone around him.
On behalf of the South African Jockey Academy family, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the exceptional medical professionals who continue to care for Bavish. Their dedication, compassion and expertise have been extraordinary.
We also sincerely thank the entire Fairview racing community, whose response in the immediate aftermath of the incident reflected the very best of our sport.
Our gratitude extends to the 4Racing personnel, first responders, medical teams, officials and everyone on course who responded with urgency, professionalism and genuine compassion.
A very special thank you goes to Shandre Hoffman Habib, who remained by Bavish’s side throughout yesterday, offering unwavering support, kindness and comfort during an incredibly difficult time. Your selflessness and compassion will never be forgotten.
Finally, we thank the racing community in South Africa, Mauritius and around the world for the overwhelming outpouring of love, support and prayers. Every message has meant so much to Bavish, his family and everyone at the Academy.
The family has kindly asked that their privacy continue to be respected as Bavish focuses on his recovery. We ask that this request be honoured.
