Gavin Smith proved he will be no pushover in the East Cape championship by sending out a five-timer on the Fairview poly on Wednesday.
Four of them were ridden by Craig Zackey, who had been going through a bit of a lean spell until riding a treble at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday followed by a double at Turffontein on Sunday and he has now opened up a five win lead on Richard Fourie with his four-timer today.
Varsfontein Stud bred three of Smith’s winners.
The sire William Longsword scored a double on the day.
Zackey goes to 42 wins for the season at a strike rate of 15.27%, while Richard Fourie is on 37 wins at 25.87%.
Next best in order are Calvin Habib on 28 wins at 13.8%, Muzi Yeni on 27 at 13.04% and Serino Moodley on 27 at 14.36%.
Smith goes to 20 wins for the season at a strike rate of 11.36%, but that still puts him 12 wins behind the increasingly dominant Alan Greeff, who had one win today to go to 32 wins at a strike rate of 19.39%.
