Tom Hodgson, a promising young auctioneer fresh from winning the regional leg of a national young auctioneers competition at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg, will appear alongside his boss Andrew Miller at the CTS Mare, FFS & Weanling Sale on June 24 at Kenilworth racecourse (Friday).
Watch him in action at 1:20 of this youtube video:
He finished second there but in the more important KZN round of the SA National Young Auctioneers Competition at the Royal Show he knocked Bloodstock South Africa’s talented young auctioneer Fiso Hadebe off his perch to win.
Fiso had won the previous two renewals of the Royal Show competition.
Tom won himself a ticket to the competition’s national  final in September and if he wins that he gets a ticket to the world championship in Calgary.
Andrew Miller, a stalwart South African auctioneer of many years standing, is a familiar face at the country’s thoroughbred sales.
He owns In2Assetts auction house and said, “It is not an easy business to be in because very few young auctioneers are coming through and one needs many hours in the saddle before being entrusted to auction high value items.”
He continued, “But Tom has a great voice and a commanding presence on the stage. He is disciplined and passionate and has a great auctioneering style and has time on his side having just turned 30, so he has a great future. He even took himself off for a stint at an American auction school.”
Andrew has set out a program for Tom that will give him the necessary “hours in the saddle”.
Tom will be on the rostrum with Andrew at Kenilwoth next Friday.
