Canny Strydom Extends Riding Contract After Gr 1 Win
Piere Strydom reportedly becomes the oldest jockey in SA history to win a Gr 1 when landing the Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes on the Mike de Kock-trained Humdinger (Candiese Lenferna Photography)
Piere Strydom was at his canny best in the Gr 1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes on Saturday and his years of experience played a big part in the winning strategy that he and Mike de Kock devised for the What A Winter mare Humdinger.
Humdinger is a handy to front-running sort, but in the Garden Province there were a number of others known to also like to be right up there.
Strydom said after the race on Saturday, “There were so many horses in the race that want to go to the front, but often in that case no one goes, because they expect everyone else to lead. So I spoke to Mike and we decided we’re committing and if we get to the front, we get to the front, and if they come we will let them go past.”
The strategy worked because Humdinger ended up being able to dictate in front.
The mare is known for being at her best over 1400m.
However, Strydom said, “So I was able to relax a little bit in front, which normally is a bit of an issue. Her ears were sort of pricking, meaning she was relaxing, and sometimes she doesn’t do that, she normally grinds away.”
Strydom was thus confident upon entering the straight that she would see out the distance this time.
He continued, “When the other horses came to challenge me, I hadn’t changed the whip yet, which means I was still going to be able to change legs and obviously I knew I was then going to find a little bit extra.”
Strydom sat on her all the way to the 150m mark as the filly rolled down the straight still in the hands.
The Brett Crawford-trained Dynasty filly Happy Chance had emerged as a big danger and looked the winner to all those who are not familiar with the legendary “Striker” Strydom.
He made a deft change of whiphands to his left hand and gave her one smack.
The filly duly started finding extra.
The meastro rider did not use the whip even once more, but instead employed his usual style of showing the horse the whip and driving her out.
She fought back and got her nose down on the line to beat Happy Chance by a long-head.
Ridgemont Stud fittingly got the exacta in the race they sponsor.
The race did not pan out well for the hot favourite Double Grand Slam.
She was shufffled back from a handy position and with Strydom setting just steady fractions out in front she began pulling.
Nevertheless, she showed her usual fine turn of foot only to be squeezed out between Silver Sanctuary and Mrs Browning.
The fact that she had to be eased for a number of strides with just 250m to go and yet still managed to produce a flying finish for a 1,35 length third tells the story that the incident in the straight could well have cost her the race.
Humdinger is by What A Winter out of the Fort Wood Listed winner Himalayan Hill and she is owned by Joao da Mata’s International Racing Club syndicate in partnership with De Kock himself.
Strydom, as was well documented, was initially going to keep his comeback of June 2022 going only until he reached a career milestone of 5500 winners.
However, after reeling off the necessary eleven winners he has kept on going thanks to being given the opportunity to partner some top horses, notably See It Again.
He said on Saturday Joao Da Mata’s Glistian Events had extended his riding contract for another three months.
The chances of him becoming associated with more good horses will always be there, so it is pointless trying to pinpoint the date of his retirement.
It has reportedly been discovered that at age 58 on Saturday he became the oldest jockey in South African history to win a Gr 1.
Gerald Kalil Is Excited About His Buy Back Quid Pro Quo

Gerald Kalil has poured decades into his passion for the sport of horseracing and he has been rewarded with a special homebred horse, the Barend Botes-trained Lance filly Quid Pro Quo, who was probably the most impressive winner at the Hollywoodbets Durban July meeting at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday.
The homebred filly jumped from pole position in the Gr 2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper over 1400m and was a number of lengths out of her ground turning for home under S’Manga Khumalo and had a wall of horses in front of her. However, she crept up well as he angled her towards the outside. She saw daylight at about the 250m mark. However, it was when she changed legs at the 200m mark that she took off and won easing up by 2,50 lengths. She started at 28/10 and confirmed form with the unplaced 15/10 shot Gimmie’s Countess, who had started favourite based on her unlucky fourth in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson over 1200m in her previous start, a race in which Quid Pro Quo had swooped late under Khumalo from a seemingly impossible position.
Gerald, who celebrates the filly’s victories together with his wife Karen, said about Quid Pro Quo’s win in the Allan Robertson, “She should not have won from where she was at the 200m mark … she was five lengths behind. Only a good horse does that.”
Drawing on his years of experience of watching racing and owning and breeding horses, Gerald emphasised, “Only … a … GOOD … horse … does … that!!”
She is the second Gr 1 winner he has owned. He owned the Riverton Stud-bred Robbie Hill-trainedPathfork gelding Pearl Of Asia, who won the Gr 1 Mercury Sprint at odds of 40/1, which earned him the Champion Sprinter and Champion Older Horse award at the 2020/2021 KZN Awards.
Prior to that he remembers having some nice runners, and possibly a Gr 1 or Gr 2 winner, with the late trainer Darryl Hodgson.
Gerald raced Quid Pro Quo’s 2006-born dam Delightfull Diva (The Sheik) with Barend Botes to win five races and run 14 places and he has done well with her at stud as she has had eight runners and seven winners, including Listed winner Daring Diva (King Of Kings).
He said about the unheralded Jet Master stallion Lance. “I really liked the horse. When I watched him running for Sean Tarry he showed a lot of speed in the races he won, so I followed the horse and when he became a stallion I said I have to put some mares with him.”
In fact Gerald bought one share in Lance too.
He continued, “I am delighted and I think he is going to get a lot more Gr 1 and Gr 2 winners.”
Asked on the connections’ early impressions of Quid Pro Quo, Gerald replied, “We knew she was a good horse. When she started training with Barend he said to me she was a special filly. So, we waited for her. Unfortunately, the first two runs, she got beat by a short head. She never knew what was going on and came flying from the back of the field. But then in the third run, when she knew what was going on, she showed us what she is and she did it again in the Allan Robertson.”
Gerald said about his impression of her right trip, “I think you will see the best of her over 1600m. I think so and I hope so, but I will see what Barend wants to do.”
Lance, who is by the late great Jet Master, stands at Leon Lotz’s Heuningfontein Stud in Middelburg, Karoo.
Gerald believes he got quite a lot of mares in the last covering season and Quid Pro Quo might help boost those numbers.
He concluded, “This is super and smart, because I bred her and I own her. I’m really glad I bought her back, really really glad, and now we’ve got a good formula for breeding!”
Gerald bought her back for R60,000 at last year’s KZN Yearling Sale.
She has already accumulated earnings of R1,144,000.
Gerald also benefited from Quid Pro Quo’s Gr 1 success last week at the KZN Yearling Sale when her full sister was bought by Sterling Miller’s Pound Bloodstock for R340,000.
Tarry Enjoying A Fine Run With 2yos
Cosmic Speed is comfortably clear of his widely drawn and running on stablemate Proceed (Candiese Lenferna Photography)
seantarryracing.co.za
Sean Tarry has some cracking two-year-olds this season and they impressed again when Cosmic Speed and Proceed finished first and second in the Gr 2 Durban Golden Horseshoe on Hollywoodbets Durban July Day.
The pair reversed the form of the Gr 1 Gold Medallion, where Proceed had beaten Cosmic Speed by three parts of a length.
However, Proceed was hampered by a wide draw in the Golden Horseshoe and ran a great race under the circumstances.
Under Craig Zackey, the progressive Cosmic Speed was always handy in Saturday’s contest and hit the front someway out.Zackey kept his gelding going strongly, and Cosmic Speed stayed on smartly to score by over two lengths. The runner-up caught the eye, because not only did he have that poor draw, but he also ran around in the closing stages. They both look to be very exciting prospects.
The Maine Chance Farms (Pty) Ltd.-bred Cosmic Speed has now won twice from four starts. The classy gelding races for Heinrich and Hester Kuhn, Mr Krishen Naidoo, and Hon. Justice G N Kruger.
A son of Querari, Cosmic Speed is a full-brother to G2 Debutante winner Cosmic Light (also raced by Heinrich) and a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Cosmic Highway.
Sean also went close to winning the Hollywoodbets Durban July for a third time on Saturday when champion Cousin Casey flew up to finish a close up second. The luckless son of Vercingetorix looks overdue for his next Gr 1 win, having finished second in each of his last three starts.

Cape Eagle Proves Himself KZN's Most Consistent
Cape Eagle gallops to his ninth win and his first Graded success (Candiese Lenferna Photography)
The six-year-old Andre Nel-trained Sabine Plattner homebred Vercingetorix gelding Cape Eagle proved himself the most consistent horse in KZN on Saturday at Hollywoodbets Greyville when landing the Hollywoodbets Durban July consolation race, the Gr 3 Splashout 2200.
Team Plattner’s Summwerveld-based assistant trainer Byron Forster is particularly close to this individual because he nursed him back from colic surgery before he had won any of his nine races.
In his previous start he was out at the weights in the Gr 3 Tabgold Derby over 2400m and can be forgiven for running unplaced.
That is particularly when considering that in his 25 starts to date that was one of only two occasions in which he did not earn a cheque.
On Saturday Serino Moodley got him into a perfect position on the rail in about fourth place after jumping from draw two as the known front-runner The Futurist set decent fractions.
He crept up coming up the hill and was climbing all over The Futurist as they turned for home.
Cape Eagle had soon powered into the lead and he found extra when challenged from all sides.
Cape Eagle had been backed from 10/1 into 6/1 and beat Atticus Finch, who ran on well from midfield, by 1,50 lengths.
Master Fuego, Mucho Dinero and the 28/10 favourite Pomodoro’s Jet were next best in that order.
The time of 2 minutes 13,65 seconds was virtually identical to the 2 minutes 13,66 seconds of the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Lucinda's First Feature Success Is For Fullard & Drew
Raced by Mike Fullard, and James and Lee-Ann Drew, the winner made it 7 wins from 18 starts and 6 places for stakes of R881 652..
“His liking for the Hollywoodbets Durbanville circuit prompted us to take our chances here in Durban. I’m glad we did,” said Lucinda.

Handicapping Ratings Update (NHA Press Release)
Hollywoodbets Durban July (Grade 1)
ORIENTAL CHARM has had his merit rating raised from 121 to 125 following his success in the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July over 2200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. The Handicappers were unanimous in their view that 3rd placed ROYAL VICTORY made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 125. In rating the race this way 4th placed FLAG MAN also runs to his rating, effectively making him a line horse as well and leaving him unchanged on a mark of 126.
There were also rating increases for runner-up COUSIN CASEY, who is up from 123 to 125, and for 6th finisher FUTURE PEARL, who was 2 points or 1 kg under sufferance at these weight terms and finished 1 point behind the line horse and consequently he goes up from 117 to 118.
There were no other rating increases, but one horse received a drop. ARAGOSTA, who failed to confirm his 116 rating in his latest 4 starts was dropped 2 points from 116 to 114.
Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes (Grade 1)
HUMDINGER saw her rating restored to her previous best of 119 from 116 after she captured the Grade 1 Ridgemont Garden Province Stakes for fillies and mares on Weight For Age (WFA) terms over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. Interestingly, she was adjusted to 119 for her 3rd place finish behind PRINCESS CALLA after the 2023 running of this race.
The Handicappers unanimously agree that BAVARIAN BEAUTY made for the ideal line horse, hence her unchanged rating of 116. In assessing the race this way 2nd placed HAPPY CHANCE runs to a mark of 118, having finished 0.15 lengths or 1 point behind the now 119 rated HUMDINGER at level weights, she was accordingly adjusted from 112 to 118.The only other finisher to receive an adjustment in the ratings of any kind was RED PALACE who was adjusted from 108 to 111. RED PALACE performed to a higher level but was only adjusted so that she equals the 111 rating of ASIYE PHAMBILI, who she proved equal to at WFA terms.
No horses received drops in ratings for this event.
Post Merchants (Grade 2)
CAFÉ CULTURE has had his rating raised from 105 to 112 following his impressive win in the Grade 2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. Here it was runner-up AT MY COMMAND who was selected as the line horse, leaving him unchanged on a rating of 119.
3rd placed TEFLON MAN received an increase of 3 points from 100 to 103, while the only other runner to receive an increase was MELECH, who was beaten 1 point by the 119 rated line horse at level weights and went up to 118 from 117.
Only one horse received a rating drop in this event, COUNTDOWN was dropped by 1 point from 107 to 106.
SplashOut 2200 (Handicap) (Grade 3)
CAPE EAGLE has had his merit rating upped from 105 to 110 after winning the Grade 3 SplashOut 2200 (handicap) over 2200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. Here it was 4th placed MUCHO DINERO who was deemed to make for the ideal line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a rating of 110.
The runner-up, ATTICUS FINCH was adjusted to 112 from 110 and 3rd placed MASTER FUEGO was increased to 102 from 101.
The only other horse to receive a rating increase was POMODORO’S JET who was adjusted from 93 to 96. POMODORO’S JET was 4 points under sufferance and finished 1 point behind the line horse hence his 3 points adjustment.
There were no rating increases for any horse other than the winner, but two horses were given a drop. ROCKIE REEF is down from 99 to 97 and STREET ART was trimmed from 108 to 106.
DStv Gold Vase (Grade 3)
Madison Valley has seen his merit rating increase to 94 from 88 after he won the Grade 3 DStv Gold Vase over 3000m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. Here it was the ever-consistent 4th placed ONE WAY TRAFFIC who was used as the line horse, leaving him unchanged on a rating of 109.
In assessing the race this way, MADISON VALLEY actually runs to a significantly higher rating but had to be capped to a rating of 94 due to the specific race conditions that state that the winner will not incur an adjustment of more than 6 points and the placed horses will not receive any upwards adjustment at all.
Accordingly, the winner was capped to a rating of 94 and the runner-up, SHOOT THE RAPIDS, did not receive any increase to his rating despite producing a performance that is higher than his rating.
Both MADISON VALLEY and SHOOT THE RAPIDS have been entered in the upcoming Grade 3 Gold Cup, which is a compressed handicap but are hugely under sufferance off their official ratings of 94 and 99 respectively, due to the fact that the weight spread for the Gold Cup is only 6kgs. This negates any benefit they received by the capping of the ratings in the DSTV Gold Vase and in fact only serves to mislead the betting public and possibly create controversy should there be a need for eliminations.
Two horses received a drop in ratings, NONE OTHER dropped from 110 to 108 and EXPLOSIVE BOND, dropped from 100 to 97.
Compendium Insurance Brokers Thukela Handicap (Listed)
NARINA TROGON has had his merit rating increased from 100 to 106 after winning the Listed Compendium Insurance Brokers Thukela Handicap over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. Here it was 4th placed MARY’S GREENLIGHT who was deemed to make for the ideal line horse, which leaves her unchanged on a rating of 103.
The runner-up, MONEY HEIST was adjusted to 104 from 100 and 3rd placed GET IMPRESSED was increased to 103 from 101.
There were no rating increases for any other horses, but five horses were given drops, MR MASTER STARTER was dropped to 95 from 96, NAVAJO NATION was dropped to 106 from 108, NOBLE CITY dropped from 105 to 103, LADY HEIST dropped to 97 from 98 and lastly GRINKOV received a 2-point drop from 102 to 100.
TAB Sea Cottage Stakes (Grade 3)
LA MOOHAL had his rating adjusted from 90 to 96 after producing a strong finish to win the Grade 3 TAB Sea Cottage Stakes over 1800m on Sunday at Turffontein Racecourse.
DONNA MO was selected as a line horse in this event and her rating remain unchanged on 94. In rating the race this way LA MOOHAL ran to a significantly higher rating but could not be adjusted by more than 6 point due to the specific condition that precludes the Handicappers from adjusting the winner of this event by more than 6 points and the placed horses cannot be increased at all.
Accordingly, the winner was capped to a rating of 96 and the runner-up was left unchanged on a rating of 95 despite running to a significantly higher rating.
Only two horses received drops in this event, HOTARUBI was dropped to 115 from 116 and JURY’S OUT dropped from 94 to 93.
