R10 Million Hollywoodbets Durban July – All Set For New Records In 2026!
130th renewal will be the biggest yet
Sporting Post
The historic and time-honoured Hollywoodbets Durban July is set to deliver its most compelling blend of sport, style and celebration yet on the occasion of the 130th renewal on Saturday 4 July 2026 with the news that big-race sponsors Hollywoodbets have raised the bar with a record-breaking R10 million stake.
The move reinforces the iconic event’s position as Africa’s richest ever graded race – both in prize money and in cultural impact!
The announcement was made at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Friday evening, during a vibrant “July in Christmas” twilight racemeeting that offered guests a festive taste of the July magic to come.
The Hollywoodbets Durban July remains South Africa’s most iconic racing event and an internationally recognised lifestyle spectacle, where high-performance horse racing meets high-fashion energy, and where the nation gathers for the race that stops South Africa.
In 2026, the horse racing story at the heart of it is set to be as exciting as the style in the stands.
Internationally acknowledged as Africa’s Greatest Horse racing Event, the Hollywoodbets Durban July has been run without interruption every year since Saturday 17 July 1897.
It is steeped in the colourful tapestry and drama that only a great handicap can deliver: big fields, unpredictable outcomes and the belief that on the day, anything can happen.
Hollywoodbets took over sponsorship of the Durban July in 2022, when it raised the stake from R2 million to R5 million.
In 2026, the year-on-year 100% boost in stakes money will be celebrated with a bold return to its true handicap heritage, reintroducing a more ‘open handicap’ designed to boost competitiveness and elevate the spectacle for racing fans and casual viewers alike.
In handicap horse racing, weights are adjusted according to each horse’s rating, age and sex to level the playing field, thus helping to deliver the kind of edge-of-your-seat finish that has built the July’s legend.
Key changes for 2026 include a return to a wider weight spread across the field:
Bottom weight has been reduced from 53kg to 52kg.
Top weight increased from 60kg to 62kg.
Restoring a full 10kg spread in the range of weights means the race boasts the hallmark of a true, open handicap.
The R10 million prize money – twice its previous level and R8 million up from the COVID years – is a key factor in the evolution to increase opportunity and reward performance across the field, and expand the prize-money distribution to recognise more finishers.
In 2026 the first 12 horses past the post will now earn prize money (up from 10 previously), while the winning connections will bank R6 million – the biggest cheque in the history of graded stakes racing in Africa.
To uphold the integrity of this world-class contest, Race Coast will assemble a five-person national panel of racing experts, which will be announced in due course, responsible for determining the final field.
“The Hollywoodbets Durban July is an internationally recognised raceday where sport, style and South African spirit come together — and we’re proud to be raising the stakes for the milestone 130th running,” said Devin Heffer, Brand and Communications Manager at Hollywoodbets.
“With a record R10 million on offer and a bold return to a more open handicap, the racing will be as dramatic as the day is stylish. It’s a celebration of our heritage — on the track and in the culture — and 2026 is set to be unforgettable.”
While the racing is the heartbeat, the Hollywoodbets Durban July is defined by the full experience that embraces heritage, fashion, hospitality and Durban’s winter social season.
The 2026 theme will be announced in February 2026, which signals the start of the creative countdown that turns designers, stylists and racegoers into storytellers, and transforms Hollywoodbets Greyville into a vibrant runway alongside a world-class sporting stage.
Eighteen Misses Green Point, British Champion To Ride Him In LKP
Reigning Equus Horse of the Year Eight On Eighteen (pictured above – Candiese Lenferna) will not take his place in the Ridgemont Green Point Stakes on 13 December.
In a media release on Friday evening, trainer Justin Snaith confirmed the decision, citing fitness levels that are “not at an acceptable mark” for a first-up run at that level.

Instead, the colt will head straight into the L’Ormarins Gr1 King’s Plate on 10 January 2026, with a public grass gallop scheduled beforehand as his final prep.
British Champion jockey Oisín Murphy, who has been booked to ride, commented: “Cape Town’s biggest stage, Horse of the Year, world-class trainer—sign me up!”
“His main mission will be the WSB Cape Town Met double, but I’d love him to deliver a huge effort in his first attempt at the L’Ormarins King’s Plate,” said an upbeat Justin Snaith.
Golden Palm To Take Another Step Towards Greatness
Golden Palm’s seasonal reappearance in the Listed ROA Stakes proved how good she is, because she gave the gelding All Systems Go 1,5kg and a 6,75 length beating and the latter came out and finished a 5,10 length third in one of Johannesburg’s most iconic three-year-old races, the level weights Gr 2 Jackpot City Dingaans (Pauline Heman Photography)

The first Grade 1 in Cape Town this season will be held at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth this Saturday. The World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas has attracted a lineup of different backstories and horses coming through various avenues to have their tilt at big race glory. The only horse in the field that has tasted Grade 1 success is the Alan Greeff-trained Golden Palm. South Africa’s Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of last season is the horse they all need to beat.
Last season, she conquered Johannesburg with the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Nursery. She conquered her home turf in Gqeberha without any fuss but her noteworthy win came in Durban when saluting in the Grade 1 Douglas Whyte Stakes. Her appetite to travel has been proven. One must remember that her stable companion Anotherdanceforme had a similar profile but her trip to Cape Town last month was a disaster. She reportedly travelled poorly which was documented in the Stipes Report.
Golden Palm has had a run under her belt since winning the Grade 1 at Hollywoodbets Greyville in July. She had an exercise gallop at Fairview in late October when she smashed All Systems Go by 6,75 lengths. To add further impetus behind that win, All Systems Go ran third in the Grade 2 Jackpot City Dingaans at Turffontein last weekend in a mammoth performance behind two stars in Trust and Jan Van Goyen.
Keagan de Melo is back in the country and trainers are taking advantage of his return. He has a full book of rides this weekend across the country. He is carded to take the ride on Golden Palm.
Keukenhof was the eyecatcher in the Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship over 1400m last month when she did good late work to finish third, 1,55 lengths behind her stablemate Princess Of Gaul. The deep draw of No 12 is a concern but she gave the impression that this extra 200m would be to her strengths. Her turn of foot could make her a danger.
Plenty are talking up the chances of Reet Petite and rightfully so. She has taken the low road into this Grade 1 by running against possibly weaker handicappers but the education she would have gained is invaluable. She has won three races on the spin and she has been impressive whenever she turns up at the track. This is her biggest test to date. Richard Fourie has the ride. He is obliged to ride for Ridgemont as their retained jockey.
Quickstepgal would be an underdog story of note. Trained by Tienie Prinsloo who inexplicably has a small string based at Summerveld in KwaZulu-Natal. Her local introduction was pleasing when she finished fourth behind Princess Of Gaul, Lowveld Lily and Keukenhof but she should relish the extra trip and she should be better for the run under her belt. Gavin Lerena takes the ride.
The first of three features on the card is Race 5, the Listed WSB Club Prive Cape Summer Stayers Handicap over 2500m. There are plenty of chances. Ahead Of The Facts impressed when winning the Listed Woolavington over the same course and distance last month. He took a commanding 2,5-length win over Master Of Paris. With only 52,5kg on his back, he must have every chance to back up his victory. Congressman has 2,9 lengths to turn around with Ahead Of The Facts but he is 1kg better off. He must be considered as does the established long-distance campaigner, Triple Time.
The Grade 3 World Sports Betting Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m is always wide open. A chance is taken on She’s My World who showed her mettle to win the Grade 3 Schweppes Diana Stakes over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville in October. She has always given the
impression that she is most comfortable in sprints and this race could show how far she has possibly come.
Green Diamond is the first Sean Tarry-trained runner to hit Cape Town this summer. She is an excellent filly and she would not be a shock winner. She has not been seen since July so her fitness is a valid query.
Unbeaten Direct Hit won at stakes level in Cape Town as a two-year-old before her Grade 1 victory in the Allan Robertson Fillies Championship at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. She definitely has the class to be dangerous.
All cliches and disclaimers apply in race 1 over 1000m. Catwalk King ran a fair race on debut over 800m when fifth behind Querari Dancer. With experience on her side, he could take a huge step forward. Watch the market for his rivals. It would not take a superstar to feature.
Loving Prague was touched off in his last run and he looks due to go one better in race 2 over 1200m. He was turned over by Umzingeli Wenyathi with a 4kg claim on his back. There was only a neck between them at the wire. His improvement from his first start to his second was assuring that he is on the right track. He seems to have found the right opening to exit the maidens.
Give It Laldy turned up at the track on debut with a big reputation. He ran a bold race in defeat when he finished a 1,25-length second behind Foudre at this course over 1200m. He is back over the same track and trip in race 3. He should take a power of beating. Richard Fourie takes the ride for Lucinda Woodruff.
Some highly thought of youngsters are under the spotlight in race 4 over 1800m. Note To Self and Miami Summer are both reported to be targeting the Grade 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby in February. Note To Self seems one run ahead of the curve for the time being, while Miami Summer is having his post-maiden appearance. Drawn deepest in No 9, Note To Self gets the services of De Melo for Justin Snaith.
Delta Pride galloped with See It Again last week, which must be a good sign that he was asked to keep pace with the multiple Grade 1 winner. Delta Pride lines up in race 8 over 1200m and he must have a good winning chance. His post-maiden run was a pleasing 1,5-length second behind Prince Of Tibet who is a Hollywoodbets Durbanville specialist. He won his maiden in September in the manner of a horse who has plenty of progress to come. He is the horse to beat.
Kattekwaadkwadraad is an intriguing horse to follow in the coming months. Feature races in Cape Town are possibly coming too soon for her because she is very wet behind the ears but she won her maiden at the second attempt like a horse with plenty to come. She was green and hesitant and ran away from her rivals and she still won by 2,5 lengths over 1400m. If she is ready to take on older opposition is the question she needs to answer but she could have enough to come to win race 9 over the same distance.
Pink Pigeon is tipped to win race 10 over 1000m with very little conviction. There are plenty of chances. Trainer Justin Snaith has documented that she is a filly to keep an eye on at a certain level and she showed that she could have a few wins in the tank after her last run when she finished third behind Disting in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes over 1100m last month. She gets the useful 4kg allowance of Sifiso Bungane without which, she would have to carry 63,5kg.

(Brandon Bailey: 2 – 9 – 8 – 4)
Race 5
4 AHEAD OF THE FACTS finished like a train to win a good race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on the 8th of November, he was given eight points for winning impressively, he stays well, and he has no weight on his back on Saturday, he will take lots of beating in this race. 1 HOLDING THUMBS is the class package, he ran a top race for third in the Listed Betway Algoa Cup at Fairview Racecourse on the 31st of October, unfortunately the big weight here will make it hard for him, but he stays well, and he is packed with ability, include him into all bets. 2 CONGRESSMAN stayed on well for third in the Listed Woolavington Stakes on the 8th of November, he will try and lead them from start to finish on Saturday, he never runs a bad race, watch him closely. 7 UMFULA could be the value horse in the race, he was beaten comfortably by Regulation last time, he should enjoy the step up in trip to 2500m, with no weight on his back, he will be running on strongly. (Brandon Bailey: 4 – 1 – 2 – 7)
Race 6
Excellent race. 1 DIRECT HIT remains unbeaten, her track record is absolutely perfect, she won a good race at Fairview Racecourse on the 19th of September, she is very fast, top jockey Richard Fourie knows this filly well, she will be hard to peg back late. 6 DISTING could be the value horse in the race, she quickened up beautifully to win the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes well on the 8th of November, she was given three points for that win, if the race works out for her, and the gaps open at the right time, she will be competitive at a decent price. 3 ASIYE PHAMBILI has been rested and changed stables on the 26th of September, she is a high-quality mare with lots of ability, she won this race last year beating Candy Town impressively, even though she has a big weight on her back, she will be right there in the finish. 12 GREEN DIAMOND has been rested for 154 days, she ran a cracker in the Grade 2 Golden Slipper at Hollywoodbets Greyville on the 5th of July, the drop in trip on Saturday is key for this filly, if she doesn’t need the run badly, she will be doing some good work late. (Brandon Bailey: 1 – 6 – 3 – 12)
Race 7
7 GOLDEN PALM won with absolute ease at Fairview Racecourse on the 24th of October, she is a super star, former SA champion jockey Keagan De Melo teams up with the filly for the first time, she is definitely the best horse in the race, if everything goes according to plan, she will be hard to beat in this Grade 1 event. 8 REET PETITE is unbeaten, she is a beautiful filly with a big action, she quickened away from the field in good style on the 10th of November, this will be her biggest test on Saturday, watch her closely, she could be anything. 3 PRINCESS OF GAUL won a great race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on the 8th of November, she was given a top ride by jockey Craig Zackey, if she settles in running, she will be amongst the places from a good draw. 12 KEUKENHOF will need lots of luck in running from a bad draw, she was doing some good work late for third behind her stable companion in the Grade 2 Western Cape Fillies Championship last time, she might be able to sneak into the Quartet at a big price. (Brandon Bailey: 7 – 8 – 3 – 12)
Race 8
5 DELTA PRIDE must have a big winning chance in this field, he ran a lovely race for second behind Prince Of Tibet at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 25th of October, he is a young horse that will keep improving with more racing. 1 TOUCHED BY ANGELS finished well for second behind Pomp It Up on the 22nd of November, in hope that this run hasn’t come too soon, he will love the step up in trip to 1400m on Saturday, from a good draw, he will run a big race. 4 MEXICAN PETE could be the value play, he needed his last run behind Demanding Dave on the 15th of November, he will enjoy the step up in trip, and he will be much fitter for this race on Saturday, watch him closely, he will be running on strongly late. 8 NEVADA KING has been rested for 88 days, he ran a beautiful race behind Major Master on the 9th of September, if he doesn’t need the run badly, he could sneak into the places. (Brandon Bailey: 5 – 1 – 4 – 8)
Race 9
5 KATTEKWAADKWADRAAD won a good race at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on the 10th of November, she was still green in running, but she managed to straighten up late and win in style on that occasion, if she can build on that performance, she can win again. 10 BEACH VERSE quickened up smartly to win in devastating fashion on the 29th of October, she is well-bred, and she has a wonderful turn of foot, if she gets some luck in running from a bad draw on Saturday, she will go very close to winning again. 7 LA LANDONNE should have finished much closer to the winner last time, she unfortunately jumped a shadow close to the finishing line, and that cost her the race on the 19th of November, her form is good, and she tries really hard, she will be competitive here. 8 ACT OF GRACE got going late in the same race as La Landonne last time, she finished fourth and was beaten just over one length by Tulip Fields, top jockey Richard Fourie has been booked to ride this filly, she will be eating up the ground late. (Brandon Bailey: 2 – 5 – 12 – 13)
Il Etait Temps To Prove Himself Best Two-Miler
Hollywood Racing and Barnane Stud-owned Il Etait Temps impressed in his seasonal reappearance at Clonmel in the Gr 2 Clonmel Oil Chase over 2m 4f 171y, giving away lumps of weight and winning by 18 lengths (Picture: Sky Sports)
Tingle Creek Chase is at 17H00 SA Time
Saturday’s Betfair Tingle Creek Chase could prove a timely opportunity for Il Etait Temps to put his stamp on the two-mile Queen Mother Champion Chase division.
Willie Mullins’s grey is one of six entries left in Sandown’s Grade One feature after the latest acceptance stage for a race over the course and distance at which Il Etait Temps won in spectacular style on the final day of the British season in April.
Winds Of Change Can Bounce Back
Winds Of Change will be having his second run after gelding and is officially slung in at the weights, being officially 5,5kg well in with the second best weighted horse, in a Graduation Plate over 1160m at Turffontein Standside on Sunday (JC Photos)
A Graduation Plate over 1160m and a MR96 Handicap over 1160m are the highlights of the eight race Turffontein Standside meeting on Sunday.
In the Graduation Plate the Mike Azzie-trained Winds Of Change has a lot of speed and class, but lost his way a bit in his last three runs. However, he now has his second run after gelding and can bounce back, especially considering he is slung in at the weights according to official merit ratings. One Fine Winter has a lot of speed and class too. She finished just 1,40 lengths back in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint and can make an impact over this trip in her first appearance since July 27 when third in the Gr 1 Douglas Whyte Stakes over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Bjorn Ironside is third best in at the weights and is officially 6,5kg under sufferance with Winds Of Change but is talented and can make his presence felt. The Roy Magner-trained Gimmethegreenlight three-year-old filly Vamanos is officially a whopping 17kg under sufferance but an eyecatching fact is when she won over 1200m at the Vaal last time she recorded a time that was only 0,17 seconds slower than the smart Rachel Wall ran on the same day and she was carrying 3kg more than Rachel Wall. She can rise above her 81 merit rating and has a chance from a nice middle draw under Sean Veale. That is if she runs because she was due to run at the Vaal Classic track meeting on Thursday. Yippie Kayay is on the way up and can rise above his merit rating and defy the weights in which he is 12,5kg under sufferance with Winds Of Change. King Harald is officially second best in at the weights and should finish on top of Yippie Kayay according to the form of their last meeting.
In the MR96 handicap over 1160m One Eye On Vegas looks to have speed and class and as he finished just two lengths behind Trust over 1200m he should be the one to beat here. Gimmethegoodlife won well over 1000m last time, putting his previous start when going out too fast behind him. He is four points higher in the ratings but goes well for Gavin Lerena and has a nice high draw over a suitable trip. Miami Mountain has plenty of ability and will enjoy the step down in trip, but does have the tricky number one draw to contend with. War Of Kingdoms has the form to earn and has a nice high draw. Rollwiththepunches could earn with a 4kg claimer up.
In the first leg of the Pick 6 Oklahoma Sidewhow ran second over 1500m last time and is interesting now dropped in trip in this uninspiring race, although her Philanthropist Dam’s only win was over 1800m. Underdog has shown fair ability before and is a big runner here. In The Willows has shown enough in his last two starts to be a contender in this uninspiring field and he is interesting with first time blinkers. Sakura Hanami has run two fair races and can earn here. Special Al is by Rafeef and is a half-brother to the like of 96-rated Warrior Royale.
In the second leg over 1160m Blooming Lovely made a fine debut and should go close with expected improvement. Inspiration has been knocking on the door and should be right there. Power Of Pearls is a hard-knocking sort who should also be in the shake up. Gulf Of America will enjoy the step back to this trip. LA Flyer is by What A Winter and is a half-sister to Mexican Pete, who reached a merit rating of 100.
In the sixth race over 1600m Impact Investor disappointed last time but was consistent before that and and can go close from a middle draw. Palace Attack ran a cracker last time behind a well regarded sort and should be thereabouts. Open Highway has been in fine form and can go close over a suitable trip. Jury’s Out has the form to earn here from a good draw with Lerena up. Sea Shanty pack a strong finish and has a chance if able to overcome a wide draw.
In the eight race over 1000m His Lordhip has Lerena up and will enjoy the course and distance from a middle to high draw. Bumps Last Grind will relish the step back to the minimum trip and should be in the shake up. Old Fashioned won his maiden easily and has a chance off a 70 merit rating. Nkandla Gold bounced back to form last time and can earn with a repeat. In The Ether is capable of a strong late run.
In the first race over 800m No Drama makes most appeal being by Erik The Red and a half-sister to a horse who won second time out.
In the second race over 800m Turn It Up ran on smartly on debut and will be hard to oppose here.
Muzi Yeni Rides The Jackpot
Five-year-old gelding Hat’s Pride clinches a milestone moment for Muzi Yeni, riding the Jackpot, and clinches a double for Glen Kotzen. Hat’s Pride won the day’s headliner, the R175 000 non black-type Founders Trophy over 1600m. (Pauline Herman Photography)

Kotzen is on 21 wins for the season at 10.77%.
Nel is on 14 wins at 10.69%.

Kauto Star won the Tingle Creek twice among many other big race wins.
