A big Pick 6 and Jackpot Three for Easter Weekend!
Hazy Dazy will be carrying the hopes of most exotic-bet players on Saturday. (JC Photos).
Final fields for Champions Day have been published and racing fans are in for a real treat at Turffontein this Saturday, 4 April.
There are three Grade 1 races and five Grade 2 events on the 12-race card and there will be Hong Kong World Pool betting on four races which will allow TAB punters to bet into massive pools.
A Pick 6 Carryover of R1-million is expected to boost the TAB Pick 6 Pool to R5-million, and there will also be a Jackpot Three Carryover of R500,000, for which a R2-million pool is possible.
There are 11 runners for the Grade 1 HKJC World Pool Premier’s Champions Challenge over 2000m and a really exciting field has been assembled. They are headed up by Justin Snaith-trained See It Again and Okavango, as well as last year’s winner, Alec Laird’s Fire Attack, and runner-up Royal Victory who is now trained by Weichong Marwing.
Interestingly, log-leading jockey Craig Zackey will be riding the World Sports Betting Cape Town Met winner See It Again this time while Richard Fourie will be aboard Okavango.
Jonathan Snaith said the stable feels that Zackey’s riding style will suit See It Again, while Fourie’s style will suit Okavango.
Laird also has 2024 Betway Summer Cup winner Atticus Finch in the field.
Trainer Tony Peter also has two runners in the field, The Ultimate King and UK import The Equator.
Of particular interest are the two three-year-old acceptors, Sean Tarry-trained Grand Empire and Candice and Tammy Dawson’s Trust, first and second respectively in the Grade 1 TAB SA Classic over 1800m at this course on 7 March. There was just a short head separating the pair and both give the impression they will handle the additional 200m.
The Grade 1 TAB Empress Club Stakes over 1600m sees Snaith-trained three-time Grade 1 winner Double Grand Slam make her debut on the Highveld. She, too, has Zackey aboard for the first time.
Another Western Cape raider is Candice Bass-trained Rainbow Lorikeet who was narrowly beaten by Double Grand Slam in the Grade 1 Maine Chance Farms Majorca Stakes over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 31 January. Again, Zackey has picked up the ride for the Snaith yard on Double Grand Slam, while Aldo Domeyer will partner Rainbow Lorikeet.
Alan Greeff had entered Golden Palm for both the Empress Club Stakes and the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks over 2450m, but he has opted for the 1600m race and secured Fourie for the ride.
It comes as no surprise that Ryan Munger will be riding Corne Spies’s charge, William Robertson, in the Grade 1 TAB Computaform Sprint. The 17-time winner is the defending champion, but he will have to face Peter-trained Buffalo Storm Cody, the highest rated horse in the country, this time. Buffalo Storm Cody has the services of Richard Fourie for the big race.
Of course, much interest on the day will be on Spies-trained Hazy Dazy in the Grade 2 Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks as she will be attempting to close out the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara. She has drawn wide at No 13, but will have apprentice Trent Mayhew up again.
It is interesting that Mike and Mathew de Kock have opted to run Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial winner Curious Girl in the Grade 2 TAB SA Derby where she will take on the colts. The three-year-old Futura filly has drawn well and will have the benefit of a 2.5kg sex allowance.
There are many punters who will feel that the absence of Curious Girl from the Oaks will make this an easier race to win for Hazy Dazy, and that she will be the best Pick 6 banker on what promises to be a super day’s racing.

Kalahari King reigns supreme
Picture: Kalahari King, powerful debut. (Wayne Marks).
Kalahari King posted an eye-catching debut win in a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m and while there was some post-race banter between trainer Justin Snaith and part-owner Bjorn Nielsen, it was clear from their interviews that they expect this one to go places.
Kalahari King is a strong, well-built two-year-old by Vercingetorix out of Nielsen’s Listed-winning Captain Al mare, Really Royal, and Greg and Gina Bortz are partners in this chestnut describes as having “lots of a ability and attitude” by winning jockey Aldo Domeyer.
Kalahari King won by 1.25-lengths from another decent-looking newcomer Aquae Calidae – one you can have a good few ZAR on next time – and Domeyer added: “He has natural ability and did everything the righty way. I just gave him some soft persuasion and he glided up to the leaders. I think the owners can be very excited.”
Snaith said that Kalahari King had gone just a bit shin sore due to the firm grass track at Phillipi and that his debut was delayed, but that he’d recently trained well on the sand track and that he’d managed to take some weight off the sturdy colt. “This is a nice start to his career. He was underdone, but in the right way. He’s a beautiful individual.”
Snaith said that he was hoping Kalahari King would be the best chestnut Nielsen will ever own – a cheeky comparison to Nielsen’s former star stayer, Stradivarius. Nielsen admitted that his own expectations were high, but added that Snaith only trains a winner for him, “every pancake Tuesday”.
Nielsen paid a compliment to Tarryn Liebenberg, who pre-trained Kalahari King at Drakenstein Stud and suggested that horses like Kalahari King provided even more motivation to spend nine months a year away from his UK base, in South Africa.
“He was a beautiful foal and yearling,” Nielsen enthused.
Marshall runners arrive at Summerveld
Questioning, looking bright after his travels.
The latest truck carrying runners from Vaughan Marshall’s Milnerton yard arrived at Summerveld on Saturday morning, headlined by Gr 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes winner and Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate runner-up, Questioning.
Also making the journey north from the Cape were Vapour Trail, Saudi Cat, Better Man, Black Eagle and World Series, with two more trucks still to follow as the stable rolls in for KZN’s Champions Season. – Photo and report by Candiese Lenferna.
Chronicle King: Gun To Tape
Chronicle King kept going gamely. (JC Photos)
Chronicle King was well out of the gates in a Progress Plate over 1700m at Turffontein on Saturday and jockey Muzi Yeni decided to keep him at the head of affairs, despite top weight. They dictated the clip, kept on strongly in the straight and held Gerbera and Dance King well at bay.
This was a smart and encouraging performance from the Grade 2 winner since he was considered short of his best after a short rest.
Candice Dawson, who trains Chronicle King alongside her sister, Tammy, said that Chronicle King was likely to be a classic contender in KZN this season.
“We’ve been discussing his programme with his owner, John Finlayson. He’s a leggy, lanky horse and I think the break has done him the world of good. He’s learnt how to do the job properly. It was nice to see him win this way again. Thanks to John for his patience.”
Yeni had to commit, which was a brave move under 61g, but he said: “I knew I had a good horse under me, so I had to ride him with confidence.”
Chronicle King is a son of Vercingetorix and Written (Western Winter), bred by Narrow Creek Stud near Tulbagh, Western Cape.
Take a gamble on Crawford's filly
Callan Murray rides Future Gamble. (JC Photos).
There looks to be plenty of exciting contests at the Vaal on Tuesday and it is not a race meeting to miss.
James Crawford-trained Future Gamble is the best bet on the card but in the very next race Pompeii Shield should stay in front of his field. And the yard of Sean Tarry, which is in hot form, has bright chances too.
Future Gamble was expected to win her last start after she finished second best behind Tarry’s form runner Galaxy Queen on local debut. But she met another Western Cape relocatee, Southampton, who also enjoyed the change in environment and got first run on her. Callan Murray knows Future Gamble well now and it’s hard to see him allowing anything to get by him this time.
The Futura filly is a workmanlike type, and her pedigree indicates she could be looking for distance. She lines up in a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 2000m which could prove to be the ideal distance. Future Gamble has the highest merit rating with consistent Vixeninthevineyard, who has been beaten in weak fields, next best.
Pompeii Shield has also had to take home the second cheque in his last two races. The Patrick Labuschagne-trained gelding has run decent races behind the likes of up-and-coming Tintin and Errol Flynn and in some of his races he has had to try different tactics to overcome very wide draws.
Denis Schwarz has ridden this overdue colt in all six starts and knows him like the back of his hand but this time the pair have the advantage of jumping from a plum draw. Schwarz will know that against the field he meets, he sets the standard and is the one to beat.
Tarry could open the racemeeting with a winner. Viking Lass was a bit unlucky not to win on debut as she didn’t get the best of starts and was quite green in running, but she looked dangerous in the closing stages and got within 0.50 lengths of hot favourite, Tony Peter-trained The Bronx Bull. She can make amends in Race 1.
Warning Light (Race 7) and Champion Warrior (Race 8) are big players for the Tarry yard later in the day. Lightly raced Warning Light has been stepped up in distance in all starts and may be headed for the Classics and the way he has been finishing off his races he could pass his test at favourable weight terms.
Champion Warrior can be tough to follow but with a record of three wins out of four starts up the straight at this course, he is not one to take lightly. In fact, he beat Grade 1 winner Cosmic Speed two runs back and as such he could take the honours over gallant one-eyed runner Palace Prince, who should fill the Exacta spot. – Clive Robinson, 4Racing.
He's the best in the world!
Calandagan finished powerfully to win the 2026 Sheema Classic. (France-Galop)
The best horse in the world in 2025 is French. His name is Calandagan, he is trained in Chantilly by Francis-Henri Graffard and owned by the Aga Khan Studs.
Last Saturday, he made his reappearance in Dubai, in the Longines Dubai Sheema Classic, a Group 1 race — the highest level in world racing — in which he had finished second last year. His last outing dated back to November, when he made history by defeating the Japanese horses on their home turf in the Japan Cup!
In a tactical race, in which the UK-based West Wind Blows set a strong pace, Calandagan produced a finishing straight worthy of the greatest champions, catching his rival close to the post with a tremendous burst of acceleration, his jockey Mickaël Barzalona even patting him before the end of the race! This was the fifth consecutive time he has won at this level.
Graffard commented: “I’m relieved, he is a fantastic champion. I am incredibly fortunate to train a horse of his calibre. This race was very tactical, and I was a little worried, but when he found his stride and entered the home straight, it was simply incredible to watch, and I am very lucky to have him. This is his fifth consecutive Group 1 victory. He is the best racehorse in the world, and he now enjoys an outstanding reputation.”
A victory of some Magnitude!
Picture: Magnitude, DWC hero. (AP)
Magnitude emerged as the winner of Saturday’s 2026 Dubai World Cup, defeating Japanese favourite Forever Young in a nail-biting finish.
The victory marked the second consecutive year an American horse claimed the $12 million prize.
With a reputation for excelling on dirt surfaces, Magnitude proved his strength in a race that demanded both early pace and stamina. Under jockey Jose Ortiz, the horse delivered a powerful performance, edging out his competitors in the final stages.
“When I looked to my side passing the 600 meters I saw Forever Young and I knew it was time to go,” Ortiz said “I knew Forever Young was going to be the horse to beat so I asked (Magnitude) to run and he was there for me.
“We knew we had a very good horse but obviously Forever Young was the best horse in the world and we had to respect that. But we knew we had a good enough horse to win the race and he showed up today.”
Meydaan was third, followed by Imperial Emperor, both Irish runners.
The win was a significant achievement for both Magnitude’s owners, Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC, and trainer Steven M. Asmussen, whose expertise in handling top-tier horses was clearly evident.
It was Asmussen’s second win in the race after Curlin’s success in 2008. He has also won the Preakness twice and the Belmont once.
Magnier forks out AUS$3-million for colt at Inglis Easter Sale
Picture: Extreme Choice colt (Lot 26) – Inglis.
The thrilling appeal of Newgate Farm’s star stallion Extreme Choice and the resilience of the Inglis Easter yearling market were on show on opening day at Riverside. The grandson of Redoute’s Choice held the top and equal-second lots spearheaded by a AU$3 million (US$2,065,200, AU$1=US$0.69) colt (Lot 26) on Sunday, 29 March.
There was a tense bidding duel for this colt out of dual group winner Pretty Brazen. It raged between Coolmore’s Tom Magnier and Yulong, with Magnier getting the fall of the hammer.
It came in an opening session which, although several markers were down on last year, left Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch “delighted,” given his pre-sale jitters due to events in the Middle East.
Hutch said: “I was apprehensive ahead of the sale. But ultimately, it’s played out that people wanted to buy nice horses and pursue them with real vigor. We get to the end of the day with a set of figures which, if you’d offered them to me at the start, I’d have bitten your hand off for.”
Later, trainer Clinton McDonald and Shane McGrath Bloodstock paid AU$1.8 million for Lot 117, Newgate’s filly by the same sire out of group 1 winner Speak Fondly.
Welcoming Party
Jockey William Buick called his return to the UK from Dubai yesterday, ‘the best homecoming!’.
Buick and the Gosdens, John and Thady, won the $US5-million Dubai Turf sponsored by DP World on five-year-old Ombudsman (Night Of Thunder).
Buick said: “It was how we hoped it would happen, it was very smooth and Ombudsman hopefully has an exciting year ahead.
“He was exactly how I hoped he would be and credit to John and Thady who have had him in impeccable shape all winter and he’s never missed a beat. He’s been on target every step of the way and I’ve been involved riding him in some of his work as well, so a huge credit to them.
“He shipped over in great shape and when I rode him on Thursday morning we all knew he was in business.”
She won US$15,000 for Best-Dressed!
A lady identified only as ‘Sheila’, received $15,000 for winning the Best Dressed Lady title at the Style Stakes, held alongside the Dubai World Cup at Meydan on Saturday.
Sheila paired a purple shirt with an ivory gold skirt and said: “Dubai gives you such confidence to be yourself. You get two distinct personalities in one look. My kids picked my outfit, my 14-year-old did my makeup, and my husband… well, I even wore his tie! I love it.
“Since it was a full-blown family affair, I have to involve my kids and husband on how we spend the prize money,” she added.
