Oriental Bouquet is the joint favourite for the Gr 2 World Pool With Gold Circle Debutante (Candiese Lenferna Photography)
Howells Can Score First Stakes Success For Danon Platina
Duncan Howells has a fine chance of being the first trainer to land black type of any kind for the exciting freshman sire Danon Platina courtesy of the Riethuiskraal Stud-bred Oriental Bouquet, who has drawn well in two in the Gr 2 World Pool with Gold Circle Debutante over 1200m.
Danon Platina has had 17 individual winners of 21 races to date at a winners to runners percentage of 47.2% and he has had a Sales race exacta, but he is yet to have a black type winner or placed runner.
Howells said about the BSA Sales Cup runner up, “She has been racing very consistently except for the one run where she never had luck in running. She’s a very honest competitive filly and has a good draw. I just get the impression coming back to 1200m could be in her favour. She has been found wanting in the 1400s, and in the 1300 last time out, at the end of the race and she won a very good race first time out over 1200m. She is also from quite a fast dam line. So I think she will give a very good account of herself on Sunday.”
Duncan admiited to being surprised by her win first time out and said, “She’s not a filly who shows a helluva lot on the sand and when I ran her the first time (at Hollywoodbets Scottsville) I had just moved to Summerveld and I didn’t get the chance to really do the proper preparation for a first-timer, so I ran her basically just off sand work expecting her to need the run. She really showed me up! It was not the first time and won’t be the last time a horse does that! A nice way to be shown up!”
Duncan had some luck in acquiring Oriental Bouquet, who is owned by himself in partnership with Greg Blank, G Piha and Suven Govender.
He revealed, “I really liked her at the Sale. She was right at the end of the Sale and I had bid on a couple of other horses I liked and by chance had got outbid. So luckily enough I hadn’t bought another horse and she went for a very reasonable price (R120,000). I thought she was a good buy at the price. I liked the dam line. I didn’t know too much about the stallion, but I thought she looked very racy and she looked very precocious to me, so we took our chances and we got lucky.”
Danon Platina is now, of course, looking to be a very exciting sire indeed.
Duncan said, “I think he did very well as a racehorse and his progeny are doing exceptionally well. The test of time is to see whether they train on or not, but they are very athletic horses. They can get a little uptight in themselves, so you’ve got to watch them, but in saying that they are pretty easy horses to train and to get fit.”
He continued, “I think Oriental Bouquet will eventually get a mile. But she’s strong and that damline has a lot of speed, it goes back to Computaform Sprint winner Shoe Shac (as well as Mauritius Champion Sprinter Green Keeper, while Oriental Bouquet’s mother Jo Malone (Tiger Ridge) won seven times from 1000m to 1200m and was Listed placed).”
He added, “I didn’t think Oreintal Bouquet was a Gr 1 horse. I thought she was just below top quality. So I went up in distance and in retrospect I think it was because she was still a bit flat-footed in herself because of changing yards etc. She’s definitely showing me a lot more speed now. So going up in trip is a possibility later. But I will keep her where she’s happy, that’s the bottom line.”
Duncan lodged an objection on behalf of Oriental Bouquet after the BSA Sales Cup over 1300m where she was in front everywhere in the last 200m except on the line. She took a hefty bump late from the winner Betula, but the stipendiary stewards, after looking at the positions of the shadows from the side on and head on angles, deemed the bump to have happened after the line.
Duncan said, “I was disappointed. I thought the knock came before the winning post. But it’s debatable and you have to lump what you get. I felt she should have won the race because a stride after the post even though the horse had bumped her she came back and put her head down again. Pretty difficult to judge exactly where it happened, but Sean Veale was strongly of the opinion that she would have won the race. She’s not a very big filly so when a horse intimidates your moves on you, she takes it a lot harder than a big horse would. If she was bigger she probably bangs the horse back. But it did show me she has a lot of determination in her, to come back after that bump and try and get your head down again shows you’ve got a horse with a bit of guts.”
Sean Veale retains the ride and Oriental Bouquet is the joint 5/2 favourite with the racecourse sponsors, Hollywoodbets.

Vintage Renewal Of The Champions Cup – Who Will Prevail?
The HKJC World Pool Champions Cup to be run over 1800m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday has tremendous strength in depth and takes on extra significance this year because it could decide the outcome of a few Equus Awards including the Equus Horse Of The Year award.

World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes Comments
Michele Wing and the Gold Circle Team spoke to trainers involved in the Gr 1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Champion Stakes
Trainer / Jockey Comments
(Top runners in the market)
13. LUCKY LAD: “I’m very happy with him and his preparation has gone well. We decided to give him a 10 day break after his last run, to freshen him up. He’s done all we’ve asked of him. We’ve got to jump from a deep draw which is a bit of a concern, but Richard is a true professional and between the two of them, I’m sure they’ll make a plan with the draw. He can do his best work late, as we know”, Sean Tarry.
5. MAIN DEFENDER: “Unbeaten in 3 starts, including the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (NBT) over 1300m on 01 July 2023 at Hollywoodbets Greyville. He’s highly thought of by both jockey, Gavin Lerena and trainer, Tony Peter. Whilst fancied runners in Lucky Lad and Sandringham Summit jump from wide draws of both 13 and 14, Main Defender jumps from a favourable draw of 5. This is a step-up for him, but he’s a classy sort”, Racing News.
14. SANDRINGHAM SUMMIT: “He’s a quality racehorse. He had a cracking win in the Durban Golden Horseshoe. The mile shouldn’t be a problem. The worry is the draw, 14 out of 14, so we’re going to need a bit of luck in the running. Expecting a huge run from him and he’ll be right there”, David Nieuwenhuizen.
1. FRANCINE: “The only filly in the field. She’s had just 2 starts, finishing 3 lengths 3rd in a maiden plate for fillies and mares, when going the 1160m at Turffontein in May. She was beaten by older fillies that day, but six weeks later, she lined up over 1200m for 2-year-old fillies at the Vaal, winning easily by 2 lengths. She’s well bred, being by multiple champion sire, Silvano, out of the graded stakes winner, Franny. Francine is progressive, jumps from stall gate 1 and has Lyle Hewitson in the irons”, Racing News.
6. ERMELO: “Since his last start, I went and galloped him at Scottsville and he put up a nice piece of work. He’s cracked a neat draw of 6, which will help a lot. And you know that happens around the turn, dictates what happens in the straight, so the draw is important. This is a tough field, but he’s on the improve, so let’s see what happens”, Rachel Venniker.
We took the opportunity to speak to Sean Tarry about his other 3 runners in the race.
12. THE AFRICA HOUSE: “Africa House is probably second best in terms of his ability. He got cleaned up in the 1200m (grade 1 Gold Medallion) which was probably not the right race for him. He’s coming into this race fit and well, and he will be running on from a bad draw”, Sean Tarry.
4. HOTARUBI and 2. LONGSWORD: “They’ve just come out of the maidens, so they’re going to be tested. I think both of them are decent horses. They might need a bit more time to be at their absolute best, but they won’t be far off”, Sean Tarry.

Gaynor Rupert Homebred Out Of Same Jurisdiction Wins At Newbury On Debut
The former Duncan Howells-trained Gr 1 winner Same Jurisdiction by Mambo In Seattle is proving to be an exciting broodmare and today had her second runner and second winner when a filly called Clifton Bay won on debut, sporting the Drakenstein Stud colours of blue with a white square blue sleeves and cap.
The two-year-old Teofilo filly is owned and bred by Cayton Park Stud Ltd, whose director is Gaynor Rupert, so the company appears to be an overseas extension of Drakenstein Stud.
Clifton Bay is trained by Andrew Balding and was ridden by William Carver.
She was ignored in the betting and started at 16/1.
However, she came home in impressive fashion on the outside rail in the seven furlong Maiden Fillies Stakes.
The Racing Post comments said, “Bumped start, took keen hold, towards rear, good headway towards near side from over 2f out, led over 1f out, ridden and went clear inside final furlong, readily (op 18/1)”
Same Jurisdiction is from the first crop of Mambo In Seattle and was out of the lightly raced one-time winning Captain Al mare, Diana De Carlo. Same Jurisdiction was bred by Klawervlei Stud (and pinhooked by Duncan Barry and John Gatt for R25 000 at the 2012 Cape Mare & Weanling Sale) before being purchased by Howells Racing for R270 000 on the 2013 KZN Yearling Sale. She was trained by Duncan Howells and raced in the interests of Messrs I.F.M. van Schalkwyk, D.C. Howells, L.C. Vermaak, Dr R.H. Katzwinkel and Mrs M.A.M. Powell before Drakenstein Stud Farm purchased an interest at the end of her 2yo racing season. After finishing second to Smart Call in the 2016 Gr1 Majorca Stakes, Drakenstein Stud bought out the remaining partners and decided to campaign the filly abroad.
Same Jurisdiction’s first foal, a filly by Nathaniel also trained by Balding and running in the Drakenstein colours, has won her last two starts having finished third in her first two starts.
Will these two fillies one day be gracing the paddocks of Drakesnstein Stud on the L’Ormarins Wine Estate, where they will add yet more quality to the country’s champion stud farm?

Gr 3 Splashout 2200 winner Crimson King – out of the Gold Cup (Candiese Lenferna Photography).
Crimson King, Rockie Reef Scratched From Gold Cup
One of the most supported horses in the Gr 3 World Pool Gold Cup, the Brett Crawford-trained Crimson King, was scratched today (Thursday) when found to be lame on his near fore.
The Peter Muscutt-trained outsider Rockie Reef was also scratched due to an eye ulcer.
Reserve runner, the Robbie and Shannon Hill-trained Electric Surge therefore gets a place in the field.
Unfortunately for Electric Surge the widely drawn Crimson King must have been the first of the pair to be scratched because she has taken over his draw of 14.
That draw will come into 13 because only 14 horses will now line up.
Electric Surge has duly been scratched from the Gr 2 Riding High Together Gold Bracelet.
The scratching of Crimson King means the end to any chances of a Hollywoodbets Durban July/Gold Cup jockey/trainer double this year.

PE Gold Cup And Smith/Greeff Battle Are Friday’s Fairview Highlights
Gavin Smith goes into the final East Cape meting of the season (Friday 28 July) with a slender two win cushion over arch rival Alan Greeff.
There are two features on the day and they are previewed below by Henk Steenkamp.
Henk Steenkamp (Nelson Mandela Bay Racing)
The mighty Cape Town stable of trainer Justin Snaith takes on the East Cape giants Gavin Smith and Alan Greeff in the two feature races at the Fairview Turf track on Friday. Snaith will saddle Top Quality and Silver Host in the R175 000 Listed Port Elizabeth Gold Cup over 3200m. Greeff looks strong with Heathcliff and American Landing in the race. Smith will give them a run for their money with Jaeger Moon.
Heathcliff is giving it one final go to try and win a Listed race as a three-year-old. He ran fourth in the Listed East Cape Guineas in March and very nearly won the Listed WSB East Cape Derby in May when he was third, only 0.50 lengths behind the winner Machete Man. Heathcliff won easily over 2700m in his last start and the son of Canford Cliffs still had plenty in the tank. Jockey Richard Fourie retains the ride and seems to have no problem settling Heathcliff in his races. He is fit, drawn well and clearly a big runner. Heathcliff could fight it out with Top Quality for the win. Top Quality ran third in the Grade 3 WSB Pocket Power Stakes and should have no problem stepping up to 3200m.
Don’t disregard Silver Host. We know what he is capable of but yes, he has a tough task carrying 62kgs. Jaeger Moon and American Landing will be ready to strike if Heathcliff and Top Quality struggle.
The PE Gold Cup is the sixth race on Friday’s card and is off at 14:25. The other big race is the R200 000 Listed Champion Juvenile Cup for two-year-old’s over 1400m. Again it looks like Snaith and Greeff will fight it out, with Smith a factor as always.
The Cape Town raider Underworld will attempt to make it three wins in a row. The Querari colt, trained by Snaith, is the favourite to win this one. He is very speedy, has good gate speed and seems able to turn it on when it matters. If the opposition is not wide awake he will punish them.
Fairy Knight from the Greeff yard is a huge danger. He has the ability to quicken up nicely and won his last start over 1200m going away. He must be looking forward to tackling 1400m. Smith will saddle two very lively challengers in Vision Of Wonder and Questor. Vision Of Wonder has shown he can take on Fairy Knight and Questor is in fine form, attempting to make it three wins in a row.
This race will start at 15:05 and is race seven. Both features are part of Jackpot1 which will be a very popular bet, boosted by a carryover of R250 000. The pool is expected to reach R1 million.
There are nine races carded, an early start with the first race off at 11:25. The Bipot starts with the second race at 11:55 and the third race is the first leg of the Place Accumulator at 12:25. Pick Six players get involved from the fourth race at 13:05 and the big Jackpot will consist of races five to eight, starting at 13:45 with the first leg where the Snaith-trained Double Check is the horse to beat.
