Happy Verse Can Bring Joy To Supporters

Some massive names are in action at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday as the official start of the Cape Summer Festival Of Racing gets underway. There is nothing quite like the best of the best facing off. Although the table is only being set for the Grade 1 races which are very close to the shore, to have Double Grand Slam, Tenango, Snow Pilot and Good For You in action is worth coming to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth for.
The Grade 2 Race Coast Cape Punters Cup has attracted an interesting field, perhaps made more interesting because we head into the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas on December 13 with fewer ideas of standouts compared to recent years. Everybody knew that Charles Dickens and One Stripe were a cut above in recent years, while this crop has a far more open spread of possibilities.
Happy Verse and Randolph Hearst hail from the Justin Snaith yard and they both have endless promise but they need to step forward and claim some silverware. Happy Verse could have the slightest edge this time in what is simply a chapter rather than a full stop on the three-year-old timeline.
Happy Verse has not raced since late August but he did have a gallop which is documented on the Race Coast YouTube channel. It was an impressive workout and he seems to have filled out and matured during his time off. He looks to have legitimate classic race attributes. From four starts, he has won three times. He tasted defeat in the Grade 3 Langermann in June but there were valid excuses. He fell over as he was being saddled, noted in the Stipes Report from that day. Although passed fit to race, that would have taken some edge off. Plus, the pace set was nothing faster than a Sunday stroll.
His three wins have been appealing to the eye. As a two-year-old, he was one of the first from his crop to face older opposition and win. That was in late May when he turned over Firingonallengines when he was in good heart. That was the first sign of Happy Verse having the tools to be a smart sort.
This is the highest level he has raced at which is common for a few of his rivals. He has the trouble of jumping from draw No 11 but he seems to have a good head and he could turn out to be adaptable to any running style. Aldo Domeyer is carded to ride.
Randolph Hearst has made a good impression and he looks like he could be a serious horse. He has a worse draw of No 12 to overcome. He beat Happy Verse in the Langerman by 1,5 lengths when the slow pace compromised his easy action. The lingering thought is that he is going to be even better when on the summer course which is being utilized for the first time in a few months. He also has a run under his belt this season in the Grade 3 Cape Classic over 1400m at the start of the month at this course. He was not disgraced when doing his best work late, finishing 2,5 lengths behind Vapour Trail in third. He has plenty going for him and he would not be a shock winner. JP van der Merwe is carded to ride.
Fox On The Run has been nowhere near feature race level but he struck a chord when winning his most recent start. He is very much in the “could be anything” category. He scythed through late to get the better of the solid Boogiefied over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville. He caught the eye of many well-respected racing people. Richard Fourie sticks with this son of Canford Cliffs. He will show exactly where he fits in among some quality three-year-olds.
One would be silly to write off Good For You. He is a Grade 1 winner taking out the Gold Medallion at Hollywoodbets Scottsville over 1200m. He still needs to prove that he can see out this trip. He has the trophy on the mantle that nothing else has yet.
Better Man could be best equipped for the Lucky Fish Cape Derby over 2000m in February but he has earned his chance. He is looking for his third win on the trot and he gets Gavin Lerena in the irons. There is enough to like about his chances.
The Futurity Plate over 800m is the first baby race in the country this season. It is a Non Black-Type feature. The market is the best guide. Snaith gets his babies ready and all three of his first timers have galloped at the course. So too did Michelle Rix’s pair of babies in the line-up. On the same morning, Glen Kotzen had Catwalk King gallop and he was particularly green while Kelly Mitchley is raiding from Gqeberha with Fyfield Legend.
The blood flows quickly in race 2 over 1600m with the Summer Bowl. It serves as the return of Double Grand Slam and Rainbow Lorikeet. They renew rivalry from 12 months earlier when Double Grand Slam turned her over by 0,5 lengths. Although they are of the same age and they have big wins to their names, they are totally different mares. Double Grand Slam is a great miler while Rainbow Lorikeet comes into her own over further. If they face off in the Grade 1 Cartier Paddock Stakes on January 10, it could be some showdown with Red Palace, likely to be involved too. Perhaps a few from out of town too. Double Grand Slam is preferred here.
All The Rage could be exactly that in the Listed Sophomore Sprint over 1200m, race 6. He turned over Good For You at Hollywoodbets Durbanville over 1250m, no mean feat considering it was his first run over a three-month layoff, granted against a horse who had been off for five months. He has to shoulder joint top weight but that looks earned. He looks like a serious sprinter in the making and he ought to be hard to beat.
Malmesbury Missile is a good horse in his own right but he returns from a break since July. He might be a step better over slightly further but coming out fresh could give him a slight edge. He has already accepted for the Guineas next month when he has Keagan de Melo declared.
Tenango emerged as a high-class sprinter last season, growing from strength to strength. He won the Grade 2 Golden Horse Sprint at Hollywoodbets Scottsville in impressive style. Race 8, the Bantry Bay Stakes, is his seasonal return but if he continues his upward trajectory, he could be the sprinter for the season countrywide. He should be better than his rivals.
Although not a feature, race 5 over 1400m sees the return of Sail The Seas, the winner of last season’s Grade 2 World Sports Betting KZN Guineas over 1600m. He looks set to be a Grade 1 L’Ormarins Kings Plate candidate and he could get his engines started with a win. Muzi Yeni takes the ride for Justin Snaith. Snaith also saddles Snow Pilot who has been off since January. The winner of the 2024 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas is of high quality and he is an interesting horse to keep an eye on in the coming months.
Theleia was awfully green on debut, but she found a late flourish, finishing second, 1,5 lengths behind Innerbloom at this course over 1200m. She is back on the same track and trip in race 3. If she has learned anything from that introduction, she should be tough to beat. Serino Moodley is in the irons for Andre Nel.
There was plenty to like about how Umfula hit the line in his last start that he must have what it takes to step forward and win race 4 over 1800m. He should appreciate this course more than
Hollywoodbets Durbanville and there is little doubt that this trip is also preferred. He finished third 1,05 lengths behind Tenpenny last time from a distance position. He looks like he could be capable of getting into feature race company soon enough and a good performance would take him closer to the promised land.
Future Free is a half-brother to Eight On Eighteen. He looks exciting and he should provide stiff opposition for Umfula.
Carriacou could have the edge over some unexposed, promising three-year-olds in race 9 over 1400m. He has been ousted by top three-year-olds Happy Verse, Viva’s Liberte and Fox On The Run in his last three runs. All of those horses look solid while the opposition here looks a little more immature despite hopes of getting higher up the ladder. He is due to take advantage at some stage at Class 4 company.
Touched By Angels looked to have endless ability when winning his maiden over this course and distance last time and he could complete back-to-back wins in race 10. Trainer Peter Muscutt has a good string of horses in Cape Town and he could have the goods to go through the divisions.

(Brandon Bailey: 5 – 1 – 6 – 7)
Race 5
2 SNOW PILOT has been rested for 301 days, he was last seen running second to Meu Capitano on the 25th of January, he is a quality horse with a high cruising speed, if he doesn’t need the run badly on Saturday, he will be hard to fetch late. 3 SAIL THE SEAS has been rested for 203 days, he won the Grade 2 Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville impressively on the 3rd of May, he is a wonderful horse with tons of ability, if he doesn’t need the run back after a long break, he could be hard to beat. 5 LA PULGA ran a terrific race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 29th of October, it was his first run back after a lengthy break, and he stayed on beautifully for third behind Powerandtheglory, he will love the step up in trip, watch him closely. 1 GREAT PLAINS has been rested for 140 days, he is a smart gelding on his day, and he gets the perfect draw here, he could be some value in this tricky race. (Brandon Bailey: 2 – 3 – 5 – 1)
Race 6
9 ALL THE RAGE looks special, he quickened up impressively to win a good race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 8th of October, he was given six points for that win, he will be just off the speed early, and he will be eating up the ground late, if the gaps open at the right time, he will be hard to beat. 1 GREEN GATEWAY was a touch unlucky in his last start when doing some good work late behind One Liner on the 2nd of November, he is a young horse with a terrific turn of foot, he will be powering home late. 3 THREE TIGERS is much better than his last start, the race didn’t work out for him early at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 13th of September, the yard thinks highly of this colt, he should improve now that he is back sprinting up the straight at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. 8 ROLAND GARROS has been rested for 70 days, he stayed on strongly for second behind Scottish Kiss on the 13th of September, on his best form, he will be amongst the places. (Brandon Bailey: 9 – 1 – 3 – 8)
Race 7
2 GOOD FOR YOU gets the cheek pieces fitted for his race on Saturday, he stayed on well for second behind Vapour Trail in the Grade 3 Cape Classic on the 2nd of November, he should be cherry ripe for this race, and he gets a good draw, if he stays straight, he will go very close to winning. 12 RANDOLPH HEARST must have a big winning chance in this field, he caught the eye for third last time in the same race as Good For You, unfortunately the bad draw here will make it tough for him, but he is a smart horse with a great turn of foot and lots of ability. 6 ARISTOCRATIC ran a fair race in the Grade 3 Cape Classic earlier this month, he was beaten just over four lengths by the winner, he should love the step up in trip to 1600m, watch for sharp improvement from this colt. 11 HAPPY VERSE has been rested for 84 days, he fought hard to win a great race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 30th of August, he is a big horse with a big action, if he gets some luck in running from a wide draw on Saturday, he will be competitive. There are many with chances, go wide. (Brandon Bailey: 2 – 12 – 6 – 11)
Race 8
7 TENANGO has been rested for 118 days, he ran a super race in the Grade 1 Mercury Sprint on the 27th of July at Hollywoodbets Greyville, he was drawn wide on that occasion, and still managed to run second in a strong field, he is one of the best sprinters in South Africa, just on ability alone, he will be hard to beat in this field. 1 TEFLON MAN had absolutely no luck in the Listed Southeaster Sprint on the 2nd of November, he was only beaten just over four lengths by The Us Of A, if he gets some luck in running on Saturday, he will be competitive at a decent price, watch him closely. 6 CAFE CULTURE stayed on well for second behind Questioning in the Grade 3 Matchem Stakes on the 27th of September, he is a decent sprinter, include him into all bets. 4 MAI SENSATION needed her run back at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 15th of October, she is a classy filly, watch for major improvement now that she is back sprinting at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. (Brandon Bailey: 7 – 1 – 6 – 4)
Race 9
3 BLIND DATE was gelded on the 9th of October, he stayed on well for third behind Viva’s Liberte on the 8th of October, from a neat draw, he must have a good each way chance in this field. 4 SMARTEN UP quickened impressively to win a good race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 18th of October, he is well-bred, if he can build on that last performance, there is no doubt that he can win again. 7 CARRIACOU never runs a bad race, he was beaten just one length at the finish behind Fox On The Run last time, he has dropped one point in the ratings, at this level, he always has a winning chance. 8 NOBLE HERO ran a great race behind Beware on the 8th of November, he was only beaten just under three lengths at the line, the drop in trip to 1400m on Saturday will help his chances, he can sneak into the Quartet at a decent price. (Brandon Bailey: 3 – 4 – 7 – 8)
Race 10
7 TOUCHED BY ANGELS won like a smart horse in the making on the 2nd of November, he was just off the speed early, and he motored away from the field to win in style, if he has made any improvement back at home, he can certainly win again. 9 WORDLY quickened up beautifully to run third in a close finish behind Magical Place on the 25th of October, he is in great form at the moment, jockey Chad Little knows this gelding well, he will be storming home late, watch him closely. 8 RHYDIAN ran on well to finish second behind Showgirl on the 10th of November at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, if the gaps open at the right time for this gelding, he will be right there in the finish. 6 POMP IT UP could be the value horse in this tricky race, he needed his last run at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, he was drawn poorly on that occasion, and he stayed on really well late to finish just under two lengths behind the winner, he will be much fitter on Saturday, and he will prefer Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, don’t leave him out. (Brandon Bailey: 7 – 9 – 8 – 6)
Obsidian To Make Amends From Pole Position
Obsidian can bounce back to form on Sunday (JC Photos)
A MR 96 Handicap over 1450m is the headliner at the Turffontein Inside meeting on Sunday and the one to beat is Obsidian.
The Erupt gelding was used up to get to the front last time with a big weight of 62kg over 1600m at Turffontein Inside and faded out. He is drawn in pole this time and will probably appreciate the step down to 1450m. Fully Loaded is effective over this trip and should also be thereabouts from a middle draw in the eight horse field. Max The Magician is in fine form and is distance suited but has to carry topweight and has a wide draw of seven. Skittle Skies won well last time over 1800m but has to overcome a nine point raise and will find it on the sharp side. Richard The First could make his presence felt over a suitable trip from a plum draw.
In the first leg of the PA over 2000m Military moves improved second time out when stepped up to this trip and can go one better here. Asiah’s Tiara is knocking hard and should be the main threat. The Silent Future is by Futura and is therefore not surprisingly on the up and could earn.
In the first leg of the Pick 6 over 1000m Xenophon has been eyecatching and should continue to progress, so is the one to beat despite a tough draw. Constellation is in fine form and and has pole position so will be dangerous. Top Division has a fair draw and has the ability to earn here. Banyan was not disgraced last time againt a good sort and will appreciate this opportunity over the same trip. Ready Set Fire was only 1,25 lengths behind Banyan and could earn.
In the fifth race over 1000m Gimmethegoodlife was too handy last time down the straight and can be relaxed from a good draw around the turn this time and then kick on, so could bounce back under Gavi n Lerena. Rafa Bay goes for a hattrick and should be right there over a suitable trip from a middle draw with 4kg claimer Savannah Valjalo keeping the ride. Espinoza can be in the shake up if repeating his last start from a plum draw. Rondebosch has the ability to earn but it is his second run after a long layoff. Esquevelle coud go close if repeating his last start.
In the sixth over 1600m Father Christmas should enjoy the step up in trip on pedigree but does have a tricky draw. Coppola has fine recent form but also has a wide draw. Frere Jacques stood little chance with the winner last time but is a lively candiate here over an ideal trip from the middle draw in the nine horse field. Unsolved Riddle is usually right there and has another chance from a plum draw. Gamer could be a threat from pole position.
In the seventh over 1450m Monkey Puzzle is a progressive sort and starts off handicapping off a reasonable 75 merit rating after a comfortable maiden win. Speedman won well on debut and can follow up off a reasonable 83 mark from a plum draw over a suitable step up in trip. Bay Empire has run well against some fair sorts recentlly and will be a threat from a middle draw under Lerena. Guerilla Warfare could earn here as a hard-knocking sort who has a 2,5kg claimer up albeit from a wide draw. Golden Aspen has pole position and is capable of popping up.
In the last race over 1450m Grand Empire won well on debut and has a reasonable 87 merit rating but he does have a trciky draw. Chieftan’s Shield is progressive and can run on after being dropped out from a wide draw. Longsword is also is capable of runnig on well from pole position. Coming In Hot could earn if producing his best. Romilly has disappointed in his last two starts but is interesting over further from a plum draw with Lerena up.
In the first race Rockabilly and Old Fashioned finished close together last time over this trip and look set to fight it out, although Rockabilly was making his debut then and should improve.
In the second over 1000m Varachino’s Champ wasn’t disgraced against a firecracker on debut and has a fine chance here. Duchess Di made a fair debut and could be the main threat, while Master’s Lady has 3,80 lengths to make up on Varachino’s Champ but could earn, although he has a tough draw.
Wodhooh Can Win The Headliner At Ascot
Wodhooh (closest) has been tipped to win the Gr 2 Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle (Picture: Sky Sports Racing)
1 2:25 PM SA Time – Restorations UK Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)
Off The Jury has yet to score over timber but it isn’t for the want of trying. The six-year-old was last seen finishing a narrow second in the EBF Final at Sandown in March and is respected ahead of his return, but the vote goes to PERCY SHELLEY. A useful horse on the level, he made a seamless transition to hurdling at Uttoxeter before walking over at Ludlow. James Owen’s gelding lost little in defeat when beaten a neck at Cheltenham next time and further improvement is plausible. Big Ticket is also noted.
Top Tip: Percy Shelley (2)
Watch out for: Off The Jury (5)
2 2:55 PM SA Time – Get Your Ladbrokes Free Ascot Bet Mares’ Handicap Hurdle
Plenty of recent winning form to call upon, including the hat-trick seeking Spit Spot, who arrives having notched up a brace of Perth successes. Things didn’t go to plan for Shantwopointfive over fences but she ought to be happier back hurdling, while Porter In The Park drops in class after finishing third at Wincanton. With Joe Tizzard’s yard firing on all cylinders, it could pay to side with BOBBI WITH AN I. She made a pleasing return over an extended 2m2f at Exeter and looks certain to benefit from a step up in trip.
Top Tip: Bobbi With An I (12)
Watch out for: Spit Spot (8)
3 3:30 PM SA Time – Ladbrokes 1965 Chase (Grade 2) (GBB Race)
Pic D’Orhy is looking for his hat-trick after taking this in 2023 and 2024, but he may have to settle for second if IL EST FRANCAIS is back to his best. Tom George now trains the seven-year-old, who looked a superstar as a novice when winning the Kauto Star at Kempton but hasn’t quite managed to live up to the hype. Reported to be back to his best, last year’s King George runner-up could put these to the sword, with Jango Baie the pick for third.
Top Tip: Il Est Francais (5)
Watch out for: Pic D’orhy (2)
4 4:05 PM SA Time – Windsor Horse Rangers Berkshire National Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Nigel Twiston-Davies won this last year with Beauport and the yard’s representative this time is The Newest One, who was far from disgraced when seventh off 1lb higher at Cheltenham on his return to action. He should go well, but REGARDE could have his measure. One of only two previous distance winners in the field, he was beaten just over a length into third in that Cheltenham race and, with improvement expected, he has every chance. Largy Poet and My Silver Lining are others to consider.
Top Tip: Regarde (10)
Watch out for: The Newest One (11)
5 4:40 PM SA Time – Ladbrokes Ascot Hurdle (Grade 2) (Registered As The Ascot Hurdle) (GBB Race)
WODHOOH found only the top-class Lossiemouth too good in Grade 1 company at Aintree in April. She won the Martin Pipe in fine style at Cheltenham before that and Gordon Elliott’s mare will likely take all the beating on these terms. Kateira returned to action with a defeat of an admittedly below-par Golden Ace at Wetherby and steps up in trip with a shout, while three-time Grade 2 winner Nemean Lion showed good progress last season and makes more appeal than Potters Charm and Celtic Dino.
Top Tip: Wodhooh (9)
Watch out for: Kateira (8)
6 5:15 PM SA Time – Castello Banfi Hurst Park Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
TEDDY BLUE found plenty in the closing stages to triumph over C&D on his return to the fray. A 4lb rise may not be enough to anchor him and Harry Derham’s charge can confirm his superiority over Gabriel’s Getaway. The latter finished a determined second on that occasion and rates a threat once again, while JPR One faced a tough task when attempting to defend his Haldon Gold Cup crown and is preferred to last year’s winner Martator back at this level.
Top Tip: Teddy Blue (7)
Watch out for: Gabriel’s Getaway (8)
7 5:45 PM SA Time – Remix Dry Mortar Novices’ Handicap Hurdle (GBB Race)
ABSOLUTELY DOYEN has won both starts since joining Paul Nicholls’ yard and might prove the one to side with on his handicap debut, with the longer trip not expected to be an issue. Creadan Grace opened her account with a hard-fought victory at Down Royal, although the Irish raider has a significant hike in the weights to contend with so Another Day Out may rate a bigger threat off a 4lb lower figure back over the smaller obstacles.
Top Tip: Absolutely Doyen (1)
Watch out for: Another Day Out (8)
G1 Mile Championship Attracts Stellar Field At Kyoto
Gr 1 Queen Anne Stakes winner Docklands (white cap) lines up in the Mile Championship in Japan on Sunday (Picture: Sky Sports Racing)
HKJC
No fewer than 13 LONGINES Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) entrants will vie for glory in the JPY390.6 million (approx. HK$19.72 million) G1 Mile Championship (1600m) at Kyoto on Sunday (23 November).
British contender Docklands will attempt to make history by becoming the first foreign-trained horse to win the Mile Championship before travelling to Hong Kong for the HK$36 million G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin on 14 December, where he could clash again with several of Sunday’s rivals.
Heading Japan’s LONGINES HKIR entries is Soul Rush – Romantic Warrior’s conqueror in the G1 Dubai Turf (1800m) at Meydan in April – as well as Ascoli Piceno, Cervinia, Champagne Color, Elton Barows, Gaia Force, Jantar Mantar, Lebensstil, Long Run, Magic Sands, Off Trail and Win Marvel.
Last year’s Mile Championship victor Soul Rush returns for his fourth tilt at the race, having overcome a bone fracture after finishing third to Jantar Mantar in the G1 Yasuda Kinen (1600m) at Tokyo in June.
Resuming with a fine third in the G2 Fuji Stakes (1600m) at Tokyo on 18 October, Soul Rush will bid to become the seventh horse to win successive Mile Championships after Nihon Pillow Winner (1984 & 1985), Daitaku Helios (1991 & 1992), Taiki Shuttle (1997 & 1998), Durandal (2003 & 2004), Daiwa Major (2006 & 2007) and Gran Alegria (2020 & 2021).
Jantar Mantar shapes as the stiffest challenge after his second in the Fuji Stakes.
“We’d gotten him (Jantar Mantar) ready for the Fuji Stakes with an eye on this Grade 1,” trainer Tomokazu Takano said. “Even so, from around the final bend and down the straight and when he lined up with the others out in front, it felt like he was back at his best.
“I think he really ran well, chasing down the strong winner while carrying 59kg (130lb).”
With five career wins, including three Group 1 triumphs over 1600m, Jantar Mantar has missed the top-three only once in nine starts, with a distant 13th behind Voyage Bubble in last season’s LONGINES Hong Kong Mile.
An explosive Yasuda Kinen victory showed the colt was back to his imperious best.
“For the Yasuda Kinen, he was coming off a long layoff after his poor Hong Kong run, so we had to train him harder,” Takano said. “This time, he doesn’t need that kind of work. It’s more about maintaining sharpness. Everything is going smoothly. He’s in a completely different place now.”
Trained by Harry Eustace, Docklands won the G1 Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) at Royal Ascot in June and has settled in well since arriving in Japan.
The horse finished 12th in last year’s LONGINES Hong Kong Mile, but his recent form has been sound, finishing ahead of Ascoli Piceno when a close fourth in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois (1600m) at Deauville in August before also finishing fourth in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1600m) at Ascot in October.
In a race of tremendous depth, Gaia Force, Lebensstil, Ascoli Piceno, Cervinia, Elton Barows and UK-bred Off Trail are all regarded as winning contenders.
The Mile Championship is carded as S1-1 and will be run at 2.40pm (Hong Kong time) on Sunday, 23 November.
Romantic Warrior Set For Long-awaited Hong Kong Return

Romantic Warrior returns in the HK$5.35 million G2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2000m) on Sunday.
Hong Kong fans will finally get the chance to see global superstar Romantic Warrior back on home soil on Sunday (23 November), almost a year after he last stepped out at Sha Tin.
The winner of 10 Group 1 races was last seen locally easing to victory in the 2024 edition of the G1 HK$40 million LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2000m) but returns in Sunday’s HK$5.35 million G2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2000m).
Shortly after his last Hong Kong performance, Romantic Warrior began his historic Middle East sortie with a resounding victory in the G1 Jebel Hatta (1800m) at Meydan, Dubai. That was to be the highlight of his overseas campaign.
The Danny Shum-trained gelding was narrowly beaten a neck by feted four-year-old Forever Young in an enthralling G1 Saudi Cup (1800m, dirt) in Riyadh, before a second agonising defeat as he went down by a nose to Soul Rush in the G1 Dubai Turf (1800m) at Meydan.
Danny Shum is pleased to welcome his stable star, Romantic Warrior, back on Sunday (23 November).
Danny Shum is pleased to welcome his stable star, Romantic Warrior, back on Sunday (23 November).
Romantic Warrior was afforded a hero’s welcome upon returning to Hong Kong, but during the mandatory quarantine period that followed, he was discovered to have suffered a season-ending injury.
It has been a long road back to the track for racing’s record earner (HK$214.7 million), but Shum said his charge is in good shape to defend his BOCHK Jockey Club Cup crown.
“He’s good – he’s happy and healthy,” Shum said. “He has had three trials and one turf gallop at Sha Tin Racecourse. All the reports from the jockeys are positive.”
Romantic Warrior, who will be ridden by the 2025 LONGINES World’s Best Jockey elect James McDonald on Sunday, hasn’t been beaten in Hong Kong in nearly two-and-a-half years, when he went down by a neck to the Douglas Whyte-trained Russian Emperor in the 2023 G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m).
Hugh Bowman has ridden Romantic Warrior in a series of recent barrier trials.

Russian Emperor was ridden that day by Hugh Bowman, who has been crucial in guiding Romantic Warrior back to fitness through a series of barrier trials since the gelding’s return from injury. Shum was keen to highlight the Australian’s contribution.
“Hugh helped me a lot. He always trials Romantic Warrior. Just in case James cannot ride, he’s the first priority,” Shum said. “He helps the stable, and he helps Romantic Warrior a lot. We made sure, if something happens, it’s Hugh.”
It will be a tricky reintroduction for the 2021 Hong Kong International Sale graduate Romantic Warrior (128lb), who faces old rival Voyage Bubble (128lb). He will seek to build on a disappointing 12th-place finish in his first outing of this season.
Tony Cruz’s pairing of Beauty Joy (123lb) and La City Blanche (123lb), and Straight Arron (123lb), recently reunited with Australian Racing Hall of Fame trainer David Hayes, alongside the improving John Size-trained duo of Ensued (123lb) and Bundle Award (123lb), also feature in a field replete with Group winners.
Further ahead, Romantic Warrior will bid for a record-extending fourth LONGINES Hong Kong Cup triumph. Beyond that lies another potential crack at the Saudi Cup, where a rematch with Forever Young would be one of the most anticipated contests in recent memory.
As the excitement for the return of Hong Kong’s hero grows, Shum contemplated the journey he has been on with the seven-year-old, one of the best the city has ever seen.
“I had confidence (following his 2021 debut),” Shum said. “I talked to the owner and said, ‘He’s super.’ But I didn’t know he’d become a global superstar!
“I don’t think he’s getting better. But I do think he’s still very, very competitive.”
Sunday’s (23 November) Bank of China (Hong Kong) Race Day starts with the Class 4 BOCHK Cross-Border Services Handicap (1200m) at 12.45pm.

The Todd Pletcher trainee received a 94 Beyer on debut at Keeneland
The Paulick Report (Dave Joseph)
Spendthrift Farm LLC’s Local Knowledge is set to return from an eye-catching debut as an imposing 3-5 favorite for Saturday’s $75,000 Juvenile Sprint at Gulfstream Park, where the highly promising Todd Pletcher trainee is set to meet five other 2-year-olds in the 6 ½-furlong headliner on an 11-race program.
Although it was pretty much common knowledge that Local Knowledge was a good one even before his exceptional debut victory, no one could have been entirely sure how he would react should adversity arise.
In addition to producing a first-out 94 Beyer Speed figure on debut in a six-furlong maiden special weight Oct. 4 at Keeneland, Local Knowledge showed that he didn’t need to have his own way by overcoming bumping at the start and a four-wide trip before drawing off to graduate by 1 ½ lengths.

“We thought it was excellent debut. He kind of brushed the side of the gate and didn’t get away cleanly. He had to overcome a little adversity after that but made good progression from his outside post and finished well,” his Hall of Fame trainer. “He trained like he was ready to have a good showing first time out, and he certainly delivered that.”
Local Knowledge, a $625,000 purchase at the OBS April sale, will have the opportunity to add to leading first-crop sire Yaupon’s 2025 success. Yaupon, a son of Pletcher-trained Uncle Mo, was a multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter who closed out his career with a triumph in the 2021 Forego (G1) at Saratoga. While Local Knowledge has already shown himself to be a hot prospect for sprinting distances, Pletcher will let the Kentucky-bred colt decide his future.
