Is MR System To Blame For Small Daily News Field?
See It Again prevailed in the Daily News 2000 in 2023 in a field of ten and the field might have been around that number this year had there not been injury enforced layoffs to two key players. (Candiese Lenferna Photography).
The merit rating system is being blamed by quite a few for the small field of seven in the Gr 1 Daily News 2000, which follows a small field of the same number in the Gr 1 Splashout Cape Derby.
The problem they say is horses are scared to run against higher rated horses because if they finish close to them they will receive big merit rated raises and hence the small fields.
However, looking at the Daily News 2000 final fields and scratchings, blaming the merit rating system is a touch unfair.
Firstly, Johanneburg’s best three-year-old, Fire Attack, is out with a foot issue and would otherwise likely have been an entry, considering he is merit rated 126, just one point lower than the Daily News’s top rated runner Eight On Eighteen.
He would have lined up together with his Gr 1 TAB SA Classic conqueror, Confederate, who will run on Saturday off a 118 merit rating.
Sail The Seas has the same rating as Eight On Eighteen, 127, and the Daily News 2000 was actually his main mission, but he is also sidelined with a minor issue.
With Fire Attack and Sail The Seas in the race it would have seen the two best middle distance three-year-ols from the north clashing with the two best middle distance three-year-olds from the south.
The only other three-year-olds who could have challenged the superiority of those four would have been Legend Of Arthur, the filly Fiery Pegasus and the smart Garrix.
Garrix was beaten 3,75 lengths by Eight On Eighteen in the Splashout Cape Derby and opted to stay at home. He will be tested over the Cape Derby trip category again on Sunday when he runs over 1950m in the Listed Pocket Power Stakes.
Legend Of Arthur was beaten 4,10 lengths in the Gr 1 TAB SA Classic by Confederate, so it makes sense to avoid the Daily News 2000 and get him into the Hollywoodbets Durban July with a low weight. It is hardly the merit rating system’s fault that the country’s most prestigious race, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, is a handicap of sorts. That is not to say it shouldn’t be a handicap as that is what makes it the intriguing race it is with a build up second to none.
Fiery Pegasus was withdawn from the Hollywoodbets Durban July earlier today (wednesday) as Joe Soma was not happy with where she was at after an ultra game front-running victory in the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks, which would have taken a lot out of her. He will preserve her for next season.
In any case the Daily News entry Spumante Dolce beat Fiery Pegasus when winning the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas and her well beaten run behind the latter in the Gr 1 TAB SA Fillies Classic over 1800m was clearly not her run. As a three parts sister to July winner Sparkling Water, Spumante Dolce could prove a point on Saturday.
So to blame the merit rating system for the small field was a knee jerk reaction.
Setbacks to two horses, Fire Attack and Sail The Seas, robbed it of being one of the races of the season, a middle distance three-year-old show down between north and south, with a classy filly who is unexposed over the trip also adding interest to the race.
There could still have been a bigger field, but would they have not just been making up numbers as there are no three-year-ols in the country, other than the ones mentioned above, who are capable of challenging Eight On Eighteen over 2000m?
Sail The Seas Temporarily Sidelined With Minor Issue

Jonathan Snaith has revealed that Sail The Seas is currently resting after experiencing a minor issue when winning the Gr 2 WSB Guineas and he is not a certainty to line up in the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
He said, “He experienced a minor issue in his race, which has sidelined him from work for ten to fourteen days, and he is currently resting.
King Of Pietermaritzburg Talks About Festival Of Speed Meeting Hopes
Sean Tarry and his son Daniel hold two more trophies gathered at their happy hunting ground, Hollywoodbets Scottsville. (Candiese Lenferna Photography).
Sean Tarry is the most successful trainer in Hollywoodbets Scottsville history and the “King Of Pietermaritzburg” spoke about his nine entries for this year’s Festival Of Speed Meeting, which takes place on May 31.
The crack Lancaster Bomber Gr 1-winning filly Rascova is all set to have her first start for the yard and will attempt to give Tarry a ninth win in the Gr 1 weight for age SA Fillies Sprint over 1200m.
Rascova has not raced since winning the Gr 1 Maine Chance Farms Majorca Stakes where she beat her arch rival Double Grand Slam by a shorthead.
The pair will have their twelfth clash in the SA Fillies Sprint with the score currently 6-5 in Double Grand Slam’s favour.
Double Grand Slam has the potentially tricky draw of one, considering the field often drifts over to the inside leaving the inside horses cramped for room.
Rascova is drawn five out of the 14 entries still standing.
Tarry said Gavin Lerena, who has ridden her in her last two starts, would retain the ride.
He said, “Obviously 1200m is not her thing and just looking at her form she appreciates a turn. But she is in a good space, I am happy with her. Looking at her form she was beaten 3,30 lengths by October Morn last year and as a juvenile in the Allan Robertson she was beaten 6,60 lengths by Mrs Geriatrix.”
However, Rascova has speed and class and won two of her first three starts down the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth straight. The Tarry Hollywoodbets Scottsville magic will see her in with a chance.
However, Tarry has two fine back ups in Mia Moo and Mrs Browning.
Mia Moo comes off impressive victories in the Gr 3 4Racing Sycamore Sprint over 1160m and the Gr 2 TAB Camellia Stakes over 1160m.
Tarry said, “She is coming along the right way and I am very happy with her.”
Mrs Browning was beaten just a neck last year in the SA Fillies Sprint, but has been off form for most of this season. Encouragingly, she ran a 1,70 length second to the smart Chasing Happiness in the Gr 2 TAB Senor Santa Stakes last time, a fine performance against the boys and she was also giving Chasing Happiness 2kg.
Tarry said, “Mrs. Browning had a lovely prep run for this race and is headed in the right direction. She was unlucky to lose last year, but she’s only just managed to regain form now and we’re hoping that will bring her on for the next run.”
Tarry has entered the two crack juvenile fillies Green Diamond and One Fine Winter in both the Gr 1 Allan Robertson and Gr 1 Gold Medallion.
Green Diamond has won two out of three starts including the Gr 2 TAB SA Nursery over 1160m against the boys by two lengths and the Gr 3 TAB Protea Stakes over 1100m by 6,50 lengths.
One Fine Winter also comes off an impressive victory. She was a 2,30 length runner up in the Gr 2 TAB SA Fillies Nursery over 1160m before winning the Gr 3 TAB Pretty Polly Stakes over 1100m by 4,50 lengths.
Both of them have drawn in the middle in the Allan Robertson, while Green Diamond has a low draw of three in the Medallion and One Fine Winter is in the middle.
Tarry is favouring running Green Diamond in the Medallion, where she will get a 1,5kg gender allowance, because he is of the opinion that juveniles run away from the Hollywoodbets Scottsville grandstand, especially those who have never run there before, so her inside draw should in that case be favourable.
Tarry has four entries in the Gr 2 Golden Horse Sprint and is not concerned that all four of them are slightly under sufferance. All four of them are set to carry the minimum weight of 52kg.
The 104 merit rated filly Rodeo Drive is an interesting runner as she has shown a lot of class before and might not yet have shown her best this season. Tarry agrees she is a big runner.
He said, “She hasn’t really got going. She improved last year and then she had a little bit of a break again and needed her last run.”
He continued, “Troppo Veloce (105) has come along the right way. She’s definitely run against decent horses and would have a chance at the weights.”
He added, “DantonfromSandton (108) found his form last time out. He’s run against some of these three-year-olds, who are now giving him weight.”
He continued, “Green Sapphire’s (104) done nothing wrong. Last time she was trapped wide in the Fillies Guineas so put a line through that run. Otherwise her form is spot on and she will have no problem stepping down in trip.”
He concluded, “We now just need to see who gets in at the end of the day. I’m not too sure if it’s a panel or who decides, but at this stage I’m really happy with the horses that I’ve entered on the day.”
Tarry has won 20 Gr 1s at the Pietermaritzburg venue.
Sadly there is no ackpot of Gr 1s at the Festival Of Speed meeting this year as the Golden Horse Sprint has been downgraded to a Gr 2.
Tarry has twice gone close to doing the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Festival Of Speed grand slam, winning three of the Gr 1s and coming second in the other one on two separate occasions.
The grand slam this year might not have as much glamour attached to it as previously with the downgrade of the Golden Horse Sprint, but Tarry’s record is going to take a halcyon effort from somebody to ever match it.
He lamented the loss of another Gr 1 and pointed out that when people talked about the great Gr 1-winning feats of jockeys and trainers from the past they had some 36 Gr 1s to aim at and now there were only about 27.
He also questioned whether any races would ever be upgraded and pointed out the high class of this year’s Gr 2 IOS Drill Hall Stakes, which had no fewer than eight horses rated between 129 and 123.
“Will that race now get upgraded to a Gr 1?” he asked.
Ideal World Relative Lands Lockinge Stakes
Lead Artist wins the Lockinge (Sky Sports Racing).
Cape Breeders
Mauritzfontein’s inform sire Ideal World hails from one of the best families in the studbook.
This family gained another handsome boost when Lead Artist won the G1 BoyleSports Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.
Strongly backed, the four-year-old was backed down from morning odds of 18-1 to finish at 17-2.
Fallen Angel led the field until two furlongs to go before Lead Artist got the better of a sustained battle with 2-1 favourite Dancing Gemini.
Murphy, riding his first top-level Group One winner for owners Juddmonte, edged ahead by a neck in the final strides.
Lead Artist is Coral’s 4-1 favourite for next month’s Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, with Dancing Gemini a point longer and Rosallion a 6-1 chance.
A son of Dubawi, Lead Artist is out of the Frankel mare Obligate. The latter won three times including the G2 Prix de Sandringham, with Obligate herself a daughter of the Oasis Dream mare Responsible, with Responsible’s dam none other than mighty matron Hasili.
The latter, granddam of Ideal World, produced outstanding sire Dansili as well as such G1 winners as Champs Elysees, Cacique, Intercontinental, Heat Haze and Banks Hill.
Banks Hill, whose five wins include both the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly &Mare Turf and G1 Prix Jacques le Marois, is the dam of G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Romantica, Trojan Queen –the granddam of G1 winning sire Belbek, and Ideal World.
The latter, whose progeny include such champions as Rainbow Bridge and Smart Call, is the sire of more than 30 stakes winners including this season’s G2 TAB Gauteng Guineas winner Parisian Walkway and Listed East Cape Oaks winner Lotus Island.
Fiery Pegasus Won’t Run In Hollywoodbets Durban July
- Fiery Pegasus scratched.
- On Saturday in KZN, fifteen Hollywoodbets Durban July hopefuls step out.
Joey Soma’s high-class 3yo Fiery Pegasus will not be running in this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, writes The Sporting Post.
She was withdrawn at 08h58 on Tuesday 20 May.
A winner of the Gr1 SA Fillies Classic and Gr2 SA Oaks at her last two starts, Fiery Pegasus galloped off with the Champion 3yo Filly award at Saturday evening’s Highveld Feature Season Awards, but will not see further action this season.
Speaking to the Sporting Post on Tuesday, multiple Gr1 winning conditioner Joey Soma said that, while the connections were obviously very keen on taking their chances in the Champions Season arena with their top notch daughter of Captain Of All, a decision had been made collectively in her best interests to allow her time to grow and mature, and then return in the spring.
“The temptation is there but she owes us nothing and deserves her time to develop. She had a tough race in the Oaks and I honestly believe that she is just not where I’d like her to be right now. Taking on big boys in the hustle and bustle of the Durban July is not ideal. We had planned to take in the Gr3 Jubilee Stakes on Sunday 8 June at Turffontein, and then go straight into the Hollywoodbets Durban July. But we always do what’s right by our horses and she will have a nice break and come back as an exciting 4yo,” added Joey Soma, who apologised to those punters who had backed his stable star in the ante-post market.
Asked why the Woolavington 2000 on Saturday was not an option, Joey said that ‘it was a combination of factors’.
“Firstly, we didn’t want to travel her twice to KZN. And the race is now a Grade 2. That’s still worth aiming at, but then that’s if it had not been opened to all ages. So the Jubilee was a better option, when the plan was still on to go to Hollywoodbets Greyville on 5 July. But that’s really all academic now and she will have a deserved break.”
A R300 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, Fiery Pegasus was bred in partnership by Greenacres Trust and Hemel ‘n Aarde Stud and is a daughter of speed champion Captain Of All (Captain Al) out of the four-time winning Jet Master mare, Scorched.
She is raced in partnership by Messrs J R Blumberg,D Chinsammy,R G Coppin,E Naicker,B M Nassif, G, K & M M Nassif,Mr B & Mrs K Ncube,MGAS Bloodstock, Kisten Pillay Racing (Trevelen).
She has won 5 races with 4 places from 11 starts and has earned stakes of R1 636 250.
On Saturday in KZN, fifteen Hollywoodbets Durban July hopefuls step out.
Future Swing, Holding Thumbs, Marauding Horde and Shoot The Rapids will run in the Listed Lonsdale Stirrup Cup.
All of Beating Wings, Indian Ocean, Mocha Blend, Rainbow Lorikeet and Regeneration line up in the Tote Gr2 Woolavington 2000.
Six of the seven runners in the Gr1 Daily News 2000 are Hollywoodbets Durban July entries – Confederate, Eight On Eighteen, Native Ruler, Okavango, Parisian Walkway and Spumante Dolce make up the sextet.
- Second Hollywoodbets Durban July declarations close at 11h00 on Monday, 9 June
- Final supplementary entries close at 11h00 on Tuesday, 17 June, on which date the weights will be published.
- Final field and draw announcement will take place on Tuesday, 24 June.
- Don’t miss the Hollywoodbets Durban July public gallops on Thursday 26 June.
Lavender Bay Can Follow Up
Lavender Bay has been tipped to win the seventh. (Picture: Wayne Marks)
Graeme Hawkins (Gold Circle)
Six of the ten races on the rain softened Winter course at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Wednesday afternoon are for the fairer sex, including the two highest-rated races, a pair of Class 4 Handicaps. The first of these is the seventh race over 1800m and from pole position the ultra-consistent Lavender Bay could go back-to-back following her victory over the same trip at Hollywoodbets Durbanville back in March.
Lavender Bay now races off a career high of 77 but she is only 1kg worse off with Pentolina who finished third on that occasion, nearly three lengths adrift of Andre Nel’s 4yo daughter of Twice Over. Given their respective barrier positions – Pentolina has the worst of the draw to overcome – I would expect Lavender Bay to confirm the form with Vaughan Marshall’s filly. Pentolina appears to have the beating of Strawberry Thief on the evidence of their recent meeting behind Kleinzee, and therefore by extension Lavender Bay seems to hold Strawberry Thief. Golden Angel has been given further relief by the handicapper after finishing fourth in each of her last four starts and she could finish closer to Pentolina than she did on 16 April when they met over 1600m.
Lickety Split is very genuine but may find it tough under top weight of 62kgs, having to concede 3,5kgs to Lavendar Bay. Green Isle, Epikleros and Tap Shoes have done enough to suggest they could prove competitive in an open race, but Lavender Bay ticks many boxes, and she should enjoy the run of the race from the best of the draw. She has previously won on the Winter course, and we can expect a very good run for our money.
The tenth race and final leg of Jackpot Two is a Class 4 Handicap (F&M) over 1200m, for which a large field of sixteen runners has been declared. This looks a real head-scratcher and narrowing down the list of potential winners is no easy task, but Pilot Flame was somewhat unlucky when finishing a good second behind My Only Weakness over 1400m last time. Reverting here to 1200m is not necessarily in her favour but Richard Fourie gets a good tune out of the 4yo daughter of Master Of My Fate and she should be hitting the line hard. Miraculous is holding form well and her second career victory cannot be too far away. She is an obvious inclusion on the short-list and rates the principle threat to Pilot Flame.
Captain’s Destiny ran an uncharacteristically poor race two weeks ago but there were excuses, and she rates a lively chance when judged on her previous good consistent form over track and trip. Recent winner, Maritzburg Memory, could again have the measure of From A Distance who re-opposes, but there should not be much to choose between the pair. October Fest comes out of the same form line and could get into the action while both Girl Like Us and Priscilla Maisey warrant respect in an extremely tough handicap. Pilot Flame gets the vote but will need some luck in running to get the job done.
The legendary Aidan O’Brien has enjoyed much success at the highest level with the progeny of Wootton Bassett (GB), who sired a record 10 individual 2yo Group winners in 2024, and Rockanrollin (Aus) is thus an interesting newcomer for Sabine Plattner and Andre Nel in the opener, a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1200m. Wootton Bassett (GB) now commands a stud fee of 300,000 Euros and Nel describes Rockanrollin (Aus) as a “quality colt, but bred for further” and we will monitor his progress with keen interest. Star Major, second on debut behind the promising All The Rage, will be a popular choice to get punters off to a winning start but keep an eye on the betting as race time approaches.
Three Tigers makes plenty of appeal as a Bipot and Place Accumulator banker in the third race, a Maiden Plate over 1000m. Gavin Lerena teams up with the 2yo son of One World who was beaten by the useful Churchillian over track and trip earlier his month. With two runs now under the belt, Three Tigers should take a lot of beating and rates the nap selection for this afternoon’s race meeting.
Happy Valley Wednesday Selections And Formguides
Happy United has a chance in Race 5 (HKJC)
Tim Carroll (At The Races)
Happy Valley hosts a nine-race card on Wednesday, with our Hong Kong expert revealing his three best bets in this preview.
This Wednesday sees a competitive nine-race card from Happy Valley getting underway at 12.35pm SA Time. The final three races on the card are all Class 3 contests with race 8, The On Lan Handicap, over 1 mile, offering prize money of more than £205,000.
Now onto this week’s selections.
Race 1: Class 4 Cochrane Handicap (12.40pm) (6 furlongs)
7 NEW POWER, who was a twice winner over course & trip last season, is yet to get make into the winners circle this season but he does find what looks to be a soft target here. The Michael Chang 4yo was held up on the turn when unplaced last time, and whilst he wasn’t a luckless loser, the run should be marked up. Prior to that he had been placed in three of his previous four starts over course & trip including when picking up the bronze when one spot in front of Jumbo treasure, who he meets on the same terms, with a subsequent easy winner in second, and a repeat of that here would see him go close.
Dangers:
1 Jumbo Treasure goes from the top of the handicap but he’s a low mileage 4yo that won at Sha Tin over this trip two back, although there were no excuses when turned over here last time, which was his first spin on the city track.
5 Top To Sky is a debutant that hasn’t shown anything of note at the trials, but he’s by a sire that had a few winners in Hong Kong, Teetan is a notable booking, and a market check is advised.
6 Metal King has been unplaced both career starts but showed some improvement when fourth here last time and has scope for further progress.
Race 2: Class 5 D’Aguilar Handicap (1.10pm) (1 mile)
11 COOL BLUE finally broke his duck at start twenty-six when winning over course & trip last time, which probably isn’t the strongest selling point, but he ran through the line strongly that night and it could just be the penny has dropped. The selection, who goes up 7lb but is still toward the foot of the handicap, was having just his third start this year and his first spin on the turf since last December, thus he could come on for the run. Whilst his figures prior the win looked average, he’d had a horrendous run of high draws, finally drawing a low stall last time, which he once again has here.
Dangers:
7 Verbier made all over course & trip with a couple of these in behind last time and didn’t quiet see out the trip when trying the same over 9 furlongs last time, but the return to the mile will help.
1 Confringo has been unplaced his last four, but he takes a drop in grade, and he did win over course & trip from a 2lb higher mark when having just his second run at this level in February.
12 Medic Elite is a veteran that doesn’t do a lot of winning, but he picked up the bronze over course & trip last time, he goes from the very foot of the handicap and should have all the favours from the inside draw.
Race 3: Class 4 Glenealy Handicap (1.40pm) (1 mile)
4 FLYING WROTE, who recorded his one success in eleven career starts over 6 furlongs last year, has run well enough in defeat a few times recently, not always enjoying the rub of the green as was the case last time when having his first try at this trip since October of last year. The selection featured in the stewards report several times, but in summary, he was crowded between runners out of the stalls and was held up for clear running on the turn and over the latter stages but was beaten just over a length in fourth. On pedigree and from what we saw last time he should be effective over this trip, and Bowman is a first time booking.
Dangers:
1 Thesis, who won over course & trip from a 6lb lower mark in February, goes from the top of the handicap but he was brave in defeat last time when beaten a nose having sat wide without cover the entire trip, and this should set-up more favourably from the low draw, but he does go up another 2lb.
2 Written Casa has been unplaced his last four, but he takes a drop in grade having won over 6 furlongs when last seen at this level in February and he tries this trip for just the second time with both Purton and a cross over nose band on for the first time.
11 California Moxie moves up in grade under a 6lb penalty having shed his maiden status last time and although he’s been able to win in this grade in the pass, he carries 17lb less than last time & it could just be he’s a slow burner with more to offer.
Race 4: Class 4 Glenealy Handicap (2.10pm) (1 mile)
2 MIGHTY COMMANDER has won one of his fourteen starts but he’s only had the five goes over this trip, breaking his duck in January and running with merit a couple of times including when placed here last time despite a tough run planted wide without cover and copping a decent whack upon straightening. The Caspar Fownes 4yo has a pedigree that would suggest he should be improving with age, he’s now just 2lb above his winning mark, and from the draw in 3, he should have a far kinder commute than last time when beaten just over a length.
Dangers:
10 Jumbo Fortune has won just one of his fifty-five starts and he has been turned over on thirteen occasions when at single figures this season alone, but he’s been a consistent type since joining David Eustace and is likely to be in the mix again.
7 Dragon Star has won just two of his thirty-three starts, but he has been runner-up, and was only beaten a nose last time, but they normally like to send him forward and he does have a high draw to contend with.
6 Red Majesty is an old timer that has won nine times over course & trip and although he’s been a bit below par recently, he drops a further 2lb with a 7lb claimer on top and draws the inside.
Race 5: Class 4 Sports Club Diamond Jubilee Challenge Cup (Handicap) (2.40pm) (5 furlongs)
12 DAY DAY VICTORY, who had placed once in his first twelve starts but has recently turned a corner, arrives on a three-timer and although he goes up in under a 7lb penalty and only carries 7lb less at this level, he goes from the foot of the handicap and given his recent showings, he could have further improvement forthcoming. The Benno Yung 4yo is no slouch, but there’s a few here that like to belt along and hopefully he’ll up bagging a spot in mid division with a nice tow into the race.
Dangers:
6 Lean Master doesn’t win too often but he’s a consistent type that has spent most of this year at Sha Tin and he should enjoy return to Happy Valley and dropping back to the minimum trip.
1 Happy United has run better than the bare result his last few from high draws & although he hasn’t won for a while, with the claim he effectively goes from a 10lb lower mark than his last win and has a better draw here.
11 Savvy Twinkle is a low mileage maiden that didn’t show much his first four starts but ran what was easily a career best when runner-up over course & trip last time with a few of these in behind, he has scope for further improvement and Purton is a first time booking.
Race 6: Class 4 Cochrane Handicap (3.10pm) (6 furlongs)
6 LOVING VIBES goes up 6lb having broken his duck over course & trip last time when having just his second start at the city track this year. On that occasion he tracked the speed before going on to win be half-a-length and was the only pace runner involved in the finish. He has a bit more on his plate under the penalty, but he’s drawn two spots inside the likely leader (Candlelight Dinner) which will hopefully see him with a similar set-up to last time, and Purton sticks solid.
Dangers:
1 Thriving Brothers, who won (known as McVay) a Dundalk maiden for Jack Davison, has managed just two placed efforts from nine local starts but he ran with merit in defeat when picking up the bronze his only start here in December & will strip fitter for his recent return from a three-month break.
7 Nebraskan, who won both starts in Australia, is yet to taste success on the local front in seventeen goes, but he’s been getting close of late with placed efforts his last three all over course & trip and he should have all the favours close to the pace from the inside draw.
2 Super Sixty arrives in good form having won two of his last three & he could have more to offer, but he does go up 6lb having had the run of the race from an inside draw last time.
Race 7: Class 3 Wyndham Handicap (3.45pm) (6 furlongs)
8 BEAUTY GLORY has gone winless since June of last year, but he returns to Happy Valley for the first time since before then and he has won here in the past from a higher mark. The selection has been running with merit in defeat recently having not been outside the top four his last four spins including last time out when runner-up over 7 furlongs on Champions Day. The drop back to 6 furlongs shouldn’t be an issue has he’s a pacey type and although unlikely to lead here, he should lay-up on the front end under 3lb claimer, Angus Chung, who has been on top for two of his four local wins.
Dangers:
6 Victory Sky is yet to win in nine local spins, but he has been placed three of his last four and did finish runner-up over course & trip last time when a slightly luckless loser when splitting a pair of rivals that came into the race as last start winners.
5 King Miles won three of his six starts during his first campaign last season and whilst he has failed to add to that tally, he has been runner-up his last two over course & trip and Purton sticks solid having ridden for the first time at his most recent start.
7 Another Zonda is a relatively lightly raced 4yo that broke his local duck over 7 furlongs at Sha Tin last month before two solid efforts in defeat and he may enjoy his first visit to Happy Valley.
Race 8: Class 3 On Lan Handicap (4.15pm) (1 mile)
6 KING OF FIGHTERS, who is still a maiden including four runs in Australia, has placed in three of his six-local starts & was a beaten favorite here last time out when third over 6 furlongs. However, he gives me the impression he’s looking for this sort of trip, which would marry in with his Australian form, having been placed over 7 furlongs at Listed level and whilst failing to feature, he was kept safe in the betting in a Group 2 over the mile. He’s by a sire that has had winners up to 10 furlongs in Hong Kong, including the 2017 Derby winner, Rapper Dragon, and I think the step up in trip could be the key.
Dangers:
12 Harold Win, who goes from the foot of the handicap and draws in 1, is finding it difficult to get his head back in front, but he has gone close a couple of times at Sha Tin recently and would have won two back except for a tough run planted wide.
2 A Americ Te Specso is a 6yo in career best form that arrives on a course & trip three-timer, and he should get a decent gallop to aim at which suits his closing style, but he does have more on his plate under a 6lb penalty.
9 Sturdy Ruby has been very consistent, winning twice and only outside the top four once in eight starts over course & trip this season & he is better drawn than his last two.
Race 9 Class 3 Wyndham Handicap (4.50pm) (6 furlongs)
7 EASON hasn’t won for nearly two years, but he has run well enough in defeat several times, including in February when runner-up over course & trip one spot in front of Happy Fat Cat who he now meets on 17lb better terms. The selection draws the outside, but he runs his best races when held up with something to aim at, thus the draw is not as imperative as it might normally be, and there’s a solid gallop on offer here with a few that like to get on with it. He drops 2lb in the handicap and is into the 60s for the first time since early on in his career and in what looks sure to be a truly run contest, he should be afforded every opportunity.
Dangers:
3 Power Koepp is a 7yo that has found a lease of life since joining Mark Newnham yard recording two wins and a 6lb penalty for his last win makes things a tad mor challenging, he has won from higher marks in the past albeit that was a while back.
1 Happy Fat Cat has two wins and a silver from his last three starts which have all been over course & trip and although he goes up 6lb for his latest success, he does draw perfectly in 2 given he’ll look to lead.
11 Everstar recorded his first local success at start seven when winning over course & trip last month and although he moves up in grade under a 7lb penalty, he has scope for further improvement and carries 11lbs less at this level.

Today’s Question Answer
Rich Strike to Stand at Irish Hill and Dutchess Views Stallions in New York
GI Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike (Keen Ice–Gold Strike, by Smart Strike) is being relocated to Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions LLC in Stillwater, New York, to start the 2025 breeding season.
The 6-year-old stallion, who had been expected to begin his stud career this year at Mountain Spring Farm in Pennsylvania, was recently purchased by a group that includes his former trainer, Eric Reed, longtime owner Ken Tyson, and Jamie LaMonica, head of the Kentucky-based The Stallion Company bloodstock agency. Rich Strike will stand his initial season at stud for an introductory fee of $6,500 S&N.
“It was originally contemplated to start Rich Strike’s stallion career at Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions, however the deal fell through,” said LaMonica. “When Rich Strike moved to Mountain Spring Farm in Pennsylvania, our new ownership group circled back and made a pitch to get involved with the horse. Everyone at Mountain Spring Farm has been great to work with, but the new ownership group has a stronger relationship with New York than Pennsylvania and we felt that Rich Strike has a better opportunity in New York. With the reconstruction of Belmont Park, we thought it would be beneficial to a stallion that has the pedigree to thrive on all three surfaces–dirt, synthetic, and turf.”
In addition to his 2022 Derby victory, Rich Strike was second in that year’s GII Lukas Classic and third in the GII Jeff Ruby Steaks. On the board in six of 14 starts, he won twice and earned $2,526,809.
“New York breeders are sophisticated and informed, so they understand Rich Strike is a grandson of Curlin and out of a champion mare,” said Irish Hill & Dutchess Views Stallions’ Rick Burke. “He should fit a lot of the mare population, both genetically and physically. I was able to inspect Rich Strike when we were negotiating the first time around and was really impressed by his good looks and presence. I am looking forward to showing off the Kentucky Derby winner to New York breeders. I think they will really like him.”
