Eleven Runner-Met But It's A True Championship

Defending WSB Met Champion Eight On Eighteen landed a plum draw of two at the Barrier Draw Ceremony in the Racing Pavilion at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday evening.
Only eleven runners have been declared for the big weight for age event over 2000m, but it will be a true championship race and by world standards is a big field for such a race.
Reigning Equus Horse Of The Year Eight On Eighteen has never been defeated over 2000m and all three of his runs over this trip have been in Gr 1s, winning the wfa WSB Met by half-a-lengths, the Splashout Cape Derby by 1,50 lengths and the Daily News 2000 by 3,80 lengths.
Eight On Eighteen now gets a chance to avenge his defeat to The Real Prince in the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a 2200m handicap of sorts in which he faced the latter on terms 2,5kg worse than weight for age.
He has since been defeated by The Real Prince in the Gr 1 wfa L’Ormarins King’s Plate over 1600m, but that was over a distance short of his optimum and it was his first run since the July too, so he likely needed it.
The Real Prince was defeated on wfa terms in a middle distance race after the July, when Gladatorian beat him narrowly in the Gr 1 wfa HKJC Champions Cup over 1800m.
See It Again, a former Cape Derby and Daily News 2000 winner, was a 1,60 length third in the Champions Cup and was a 0,25 length third to The Real Prince in the King’s Plate after flying up late.
Gladatorian was finishing fast in the King’s Plate too and was only beaten 3,95 lengths.
He will now have his third run at the course and at the age of six he looks likely to relish the easy 2000m of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. His pedigree, coupled with the fact he has won a Gr 2 over 1200m on top of his Gr 1 over 1800m, suggests he will relish the course and distance too.
So, the intense weight for age rivalry between Gladatorian, The Real Prince and See It Again is set for its latest renewal and the reigning Equus Horse Of The Year Eight On Eighteen joins the fray alongside the like of Garrix and Sail The Seas, while Gr 1 wfa winner over a mile, Cosmic Speed, ventures beyond a mile for the first time.
The Piet and Elbert Steyn-trained Garrix went close in the Gr 2 Ridgemont Green Point before possibly running a flat race in the King’s Plate. He finished like a train in the Green Point and should be mature enough to step up to 2000m having won the Gr 3 Legal Eagle Stakes over 1800m as a three-year-old last year before failing by a shorthead in the Listed Pocket Power Stakes over 1950m.
Sail The Seas beat Eight On Eighteen and Cosmic Speed in the Gr 2 WSB Guineas and he was a close fourth in the recent King’s Plate. Over 2000m he was beaten only 1,50 lengths by Eight On Eighteen in last year’s Gr 1 Splashout Cape Derby.
Looking at the draws of the five aforementioned Gr 1 winners, Cosmic Speed has drawn one, Eight On Eighteen is in barrier position two, Gladatorian drew four, The Real Prince drew six and See It Again drew ten.
The two most likely pretenders Sail The Seas and Garrix drew three and five respectively.
Native Ruler and Okavango are capable of running good races, although their tasks at wfa level are tougher than they have been in the races they have won or gone close in.
Okavango and Native Ruler were beaten 4,05 lengths and 4,35 lengths respectively by Eight On Eighteen in last year’s Daily News 2000.
Native Ruler ran a cracker in the July, where he was a somewhat unlucky 3,95 length sixth, while Okavango was a 6,20 length ninth. However, Native Ruler was on half-a-kilogram better terms than weight for age with the winner The Real Prince, while Okavango faced The Real Prince on weight for age terms, so they have a few lengths to find.
They will also now be respectively 3kg and 2,5kg worse off with Eight On Eighteen from the July and the latter only lost the July by a neck, so they effectively have many lengths to find to match Eight On Eighteen.
If Okavango’s chances looks difficult on the basis of the aforementioned form, then The Equator’s chances look positively forlorn, because he was beaten 4,25 lengths by Okavango when the latter won the Gr 2 Anthonij Rupert Premier Trophy over 1800m on L’Ormarins King’s Plate day and they now face each other on the same terms in the Met.
A below par Native Ruler was beaten 5,10 lengths in the Premier Trophy and he will need to bounce back.
That leaves the Gr 3 Cape Mile winner Legal Counsel, who is quite an interesting runner because he has won over 1800m before and in the King’s Plate he went way too fast in joint second with the favourite Jan Van Goyen and whilst the latter faded away tamely to be beaten 9,10 lengths, Legal Counsel managed to stay on well enough go be beaten only 4,45 lengths and in fact he was only a neck behind Eight On Eighteen and was 1,50 lengths ahead of Garrix.
He is thus the dark horse of the race.
Legal Counsel is drawn seven.
Native Ruler, The Equator and Okavango have drawn eight, nine and eleven respectively.
The final field for the WS Met is shown below:
1st R2968750, 2nd R950000, 3rd R475000, 4th R237500, 5th R118750, RCIS R250000

Met Connections - How Have They Fared Before?
Both Owner Nick Jonsson and trainer Justin Snaith will be going for a fourth successive win in the WSB Met. Jonsson has three chances to do it, while Snaith has six chances (Picture: Wayne Marks)
Owner Nick Jonsson has won the Met three times in succession with three different horses, an incredible feat. He did it with his part-owned Jet Dark, his outright-owned Double Superlative and his part-owned Eight On Eighteen. He can make it four on the trot if Eight On Eighteen retains his crown or if two horses he owns outright, See It Again and Okavango, win it.
Etienne Braun was part-owner of the 2020 Met winner One World and he has a share in the runner Legal Counsel this year.
Champion Sire Vercingetorix has four of the eleven runners in this year’s WSB Met, Sail The Seas, Gladatorian , Garrix and Native Ruler. Vercingetorix will be out to win his first WSB Met.
Defending champion Eight On Eighteen was the first Met winner for the late sire Lancaster Bomber.
Twice Over, sire of Met runner See It Again, was sire of 2024 Met winner Double Superlative.
Galileo, sire of The Equator, was sire of the 2012 Met winner Igugu.
Gimmethegreenlight has The Real Prince in this year’s Met and the three-times champion sire will be out to land his first Met.
Master Of My Fate, sire of Okavango, Legislate, sire of Legal Counsel, and Querari, sire of Cosmic Speed, will all be out to land the Met for the first time too.
Drakenstein Stud were breeders of 2018 winner Oh Susanna as well as 2023 winner Jet Dark and last year’s winner Eight On Eighteen. This year they can do it again with any one of Eight On Eighteen, Sail The Seas or See It Again.
The world’s greatest thoroughbred breeders Coolmore are breeders of The Equator and bred Native Ruler in partnership with Maine Chance Farms.
Maine Chance Farms also bred Cosmic Speed.
Of the six yards still involved in this year’s Met only two have won the big race before, Justin Snaith and Sean Tarry.
Justin Snaith will be out to equal Mike Bass’s record of winning the Met for four years in a row and for a fifth time overall.
Bass won the Met five times in all and his four-in-a-row feat was with two progeny of Jet Master, three years in a row with the legendary Pocket Power from 2007 to 2009 and then with Pocket Power’s full sister River Jetez in 2010.
Snaith won it with Jet Dark in 2023, with Double Superlative in 2024 and with Eight On Eighteen in 2025. Both Jet Dark and Double Superlative are out of Jet Master mares.
Eight On Eighteen defends his crown this year.
If he wins it Snaith would obviously have done his four in succession with three different horses as opposed to Bass doing it with two horses.
Snaith will have achieved the remarkable feat of doing four in a row with four different horses if any of See It Again, Sail The Seas, Native Ruler, Okavango or Legal Counsel win the big race.
As far as the Jet Master sequence goes it will be fitting if Okavango does it, because he is by Jet Master’s son Master Of My Fate.
Snaith holds a world record of eight winners at a single meeting, which he achieved on Met day in 2016.
He will have a chance of breaking that record at this year’s Met meeting, because he contests every one of the races and has a total of 43 runners in all at the meeting.
Sean Tarry won the Met with Alastor in 2005.
Gavin Lerena will be riding Tarry’s runner this year, Cosmic Speed.
Lerena is one of only four jockeys in this year’s race to have won the Met before.
Richard Fourie, JP van der Merwe and Aldo Domeyer are the other three.
Fourie will be going for a third Met and the other three have only won one Met apiece.
The Real Prince is trained by Dean Kannemeyer and it is one of the most surprising facts in SA racing that this prolific big race winner is yet to win the Met.
Gladatorian is trained by Stuart Ferrie, who has only had his license for just under three years, but he has vast training experience having worked in the like of Dubai and the USA and he was for many years assistant trainer to the masterful Dennis Drier at Summerveld. This will be his first Met runner.
Tony Peter will also be having his first Met runner. He is trainer of The Equator.
Piet Steyn is in partnership with his son Elbert now and they send out Garrix. Piet has had his license since 1981 and his most recent Met runner was Gem King in 2023.
Brett Crawford Making Waves In Hong Kong
Brett Crawford has been successful in every venture he has undertaken and is now proving his mettle in the tough arena of Hong Kong. He is pictured after his first win at Happy Valley (Picture: HKJC)

Brett Crawford wasted no time in getting off the mark as a trainer during his first season in Hong Kong.
Brett’s first Hong Kong success came when New Zealand bred gelding Speedy Smartie (Satono Aladdin -Lemonade) won the Tropicbird Handicap at Sha Tin.Speedy Smartie, his trainer’s first starter in Hong Kong, had previously finished second when having his first start for the Crawford stable.
The same day that Speedy Smartie won, the Crawford yard celebrated their first double in Hong Kong when Ninja Derby won the Woodpecker Handicap. While Speedy Smartie was partnered by Karis Teetan, Ninja Derby (Ocean Park -Pastrana) was booted home by Lyle Hewitson.
Since this breakthrough, the Crawford yard has gone on to enjoy further success. At the time of writing, Brett had sent out runners to earn more than HK$13.106 million, a fine achievement given how competitive racing in Hong Kong is. He has also already enjoyed graded success in Hong Kong, with Brett having sent out Encountered (Churchill -Enrol) to claim the G3 SA SA Ladies Purse.
So how did his first ten runners in Hong Kong fare? Below is a brief summary of the Crawford yard’s initial Hong Kong starters:
SPEEDY SMARTIE: g Satono Aladdin -Lemonade
The first Hong Kong winner for the stable, Speedy Smartie has done nothing wrong since joining the Crawford stable. His first start for Brett saw Speedy Smartie finish second, with the gelding going on to win twice more. In his six starts for the Crawfords, Speedy Smartie is yet to finish out of the top four.
ONLY U: g Proisir -Princess Raaj
The son of champion New Zealand sire Proisir ran third when making his first start for Brett and followed that up with two consecutive fourth place finishers.
ENCOUNTERED: g Churchill -Enrol
He provided Brett with his biggest win in Hong Kong to date when he won the 2025 G3 SA SA Ladies Purse. Encountered did well on that occasion to overcome a wide draw of 14 to win under the urgings of Karis Teetan.
JUST FOLLOW ME: g Star Turn -Volcanic Eruption
After finishing unplaced in his first three starts for the stable, Just Follow Me finished fourth next time out.
RADIANT SWIFT: g Australia -Ultra Appeal
Having never finished closer than 11th in Hong Kong prior to joining Brett, Radiant Swift ran eighth on his first start for the stable.
NINJA DERBY: g Ocean Park -Pastrana
Was well beaten, when 11th at Sha Tin on Sunday, but prior to that run, Ninja Derby had won his first start for the Crawfords, before going on to win again for Brett when victorious at Happy Valley on December 3rd.
YOUNG HORIZON: g Star Witness -Shalimar Sky
Young Horizon followed up a ninth place effort when winning next time out for Brett and his team. He went on to finish third next time out.
DOUBLE SHOW: g Showcasing -Showus
After finishing 12th at Sha Tin last year, Double Show went on to win next time out. Subsequently, the Showcasing gelding finished second over 1400m at Sha Tin.
BEAUTY MISSILE: g Smart Missile -Five Card Charlie
He got off the mark for the yard when he won the Murray Handicap (1800m) at Sha Tin on January 7th. It was a good win from the gelding, with Beauty Missile having raced wide and without cover.
GOOD PROSPECT: g Churchill -La Chica Bella
After finishing tenth on his first start for the yard, Good Prospect went on to finish fourth and fifth respectively in his next two starts. He finished ninth, when racing with his tongue over the bit, at his most recent start.
Rafeef Looks To Have Another Smart One In Flower Island
Flower Island powers in under Callan Murray (JC Photos)
Cape Breeders
Ridgemont’s top-class stallion Rafeef looks to have come up with a potentially smart two-year-old in the form of Flower Island.
The latter made an eye catching, winning debut when she won the first race at the Vaal on Saturday.
Under Callan Murray, the Mike/Mathew De Kock trained filly unleashed a fine turn of foot which rocketed Flower Island into the lead close home in Saturday’s 4Racing Welcomes You Maiden Juvenile Plate (1000m).
From there, the Rafeef filly stormed away to post an impressive near three and three quarter length win on debut.
Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Flower Island races for Mr & Mrs Steven Jell, Messrs Mike de Kock, Chris Haynes, George Ragunan & Fieldspring Racing.
Saturday’s winner was produced by the Silvano mare Orchid Island.
Flower Island’s G1 Computaform Sprint winning sire Rafeef is enjoying another fine season, and, at the time of writing, ranked fifth on the South African General Sires premiership.
The son of Redoute’s Choice and National Colour has 22 lots on offer at the Premier Yearling Sale, and a further six yearlings on sale at the Cape Yearling Sale.
Glen Kotzen Moves From Woodhill To Milnerton
Woodhill Racing Estate was home to a number of champions (Picture Supplied)
The powerful Glen Kotzen racing operation based at the beautiful Woodhill Racing Estate in Paarl will relocate to the Milnerton Training Centre in a move that brings to a close 24 wonderful years for the famous racing family.
In a statement issued to their patrons on Tuesday evening, the Woodhill Racing Team confirm that they will hand the keys over to their neighbours Varsfontein Stud.
The statement records that in 2001, with a shared dream and a deep love for the land, the charming gentleman Neil Smith and his delightful wife Maureen founded Woodhill Racing.
On the recommendation of Carl de Vos of Varsfontein Stud, they purchased the beautiful farm opposite that iconic nursery of champions, unknowingly laying the foundation for what would become one of South Africa’s most treasured racing estates.
In partnership with the Smiths, Glen Kotzen transformed Woodhill into a truly world class private training establishment.
Over the next 25 years, Woodhill would write an extraordinary chapter in South African racing history, producing countless Equus Champions and a remarkable roll of honour.
Among them was the legendary Big City Life, born on this very soil, who went on to capture four Grade 1 victories, including the unforgettable 2009 Durban July.
For Glen and Kathi Kotzen, Woodhill was never just a training centre – it was home.
Here they raised their family from tiny tots into the engaging young adults they are today.
Their roots run deep in this land, and they feel profoundly privileged to have been able to call Woodhill their home for so many formative and treasured years.
With full hearts and great faith in the future, the Kotzen family have now decided to pass the baton to their wonderful neighbours, Varsfontein Stud.
They do so with complete confidence that Woodhill will be taken to even greater heights under such exceptional guardianship.
They extend their warmest wishes for every success in the years ahead and take great comfort in knowing that this special farm will continue to be loved, nurtured and respected and that they will always be welcome to return and visit.
While this marks the end of the Kotzen family’s tenure at Woodhill, it is by no means the end of their commitment to their horses.
Their care and welfare will, as always, remain at the heart of every decision. In partnership with Race Coast, training will continue from Milnerton and extend to Durban, while still making use of all racing tracks across the country.
In closing they state that they offer their deepest and most heartfelt thanks to their valued patrons, for their unwavering support, encouragement and friendship over the years. It has been an honour and a privilege to share this remarkable journey with you.

FIELDS, Wednesday, 21 January
Today’s Question Answer
Ben Jones won six Kentucky Derbys in 11 attempts between 1938 and 1952 and Bob Baffert has won six Kentucky Derbys in 24 attempts with his first win being in 1997 and his last in 2020.
