Scottsville King Tarry’s Team In A Good Space
Sean Tarry is the king of Hollywoodbets Scottsville having had 15 Grade 1 victories there and he comes with a strong hand to the Pietermaritzburg venue yet again.

Crawford’s Gr 1 HWB Scottsville Runners In Fine Shape
Brett Crawford has five runners in the Gr 1s at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Saturday and said all of them had been doing well.
In the Golden Horse Sprint he has Surjay, who will be having his second run as a gelding.
Brett said, “We didn’t want to cut him in the middle of the Cape Summer season, so did it afterwards and he needed his last start in the Drill Hall. He has been putting in very good work.”
Surjay might be having his second run after a layoff, but his best run of the season, when beating high profile horses Kommetdieding and Trip Of Fortune in the Bantry Bay Sprint at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, was also his second run after a layoff and was over this same trip. He showed good cruising speed and a fine turn of foot that day, which is exactly what a horse requires at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. However, he was not quite going through with it all the way to the line, even when he won the Bantry Bay Stakes. If gelding has helped in that regard he could be a good value runner. Luyolo Mxothwa knows the Vercingetorix four-year-old well and retains the ride.
Crawford runs the well-bred Cullinan Blue in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship. She is by Vercingetorix out of Rock Of Gibraltar mare Gibraltar Blue, who followed victory in the Gr 2 KRA Fillies Guineas with a close second in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint before winning the Gr 2 Tibouchina over 1400m, the Listed Gardenia over 1000m and the Gr 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge over 1600m. She has also produced the like of the useful Battleoftrafalgar, a 98 merit rated sprinter.
Crawford was very happy with Cullinan Blue’s preparation and felt she had run a fine race in the Gr 2 SA Fillies Nursery. She was drawn on the wrong side by trends in barrier two in that race, but was up with the pace throughout sticking to her stations. She was only found wanting in the closing stages when the outside horses swooped and she finished a four length fourth. Considering that unfavourable draw and the differing rates at which two-year-olds improve she has a shout of reversing form with Mrs Geriatrix and Red Hot Rose. She is drawn 9 out of 12 and Kabelo Matsunyane stays aboard.
Crawford runs the Irish-bred The Abdicator by No Nay Never in the Gr 1 Gold Medallion. He rated this colt but added he was an excitable type. The pacifiers are now on and he said if he remained settled he would run a much better race than he did last time when beaten 11,50 lengths in the Gr 3 Godolphin Barb over 1100m.
Crawford runs the Australian-bred pair Stiptelik (Snitzel) and Whoa Whoa Whoa (Maurice) in the SA Fillies Sprint and said they were both exceptionally well but were up against two very good fillies in Princess Calla and Desert Miracle.
Crawford’s runners have all been prepared out of Randjesfontein Johannesburg and were on their way to Pietermaritzburg this morning.
Crawford has won Gr 1s at Hollywoodbets Scottsville before, winning the SA Filllies Sprint twice with the Australian-bred Danehill filly Laisserfaire and the Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint with Bold Respect (Bold Silvano). He has had a host of close calls in Gr 1s at the Pietermaritzburg venue too.

Roberts- “Good Traveller Will Think He Is Running Loose With That Weight”
Michael Roberts, fresh from Gr 1 glory in the Daily News 2000, said he believed Good Traveller would think he was “running loose” carrying 54kg in the Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint.

Adam Azzie Happy With HWB Scottsville Gr 1 Trio
Adam Azzie is happy with his three horses who this morning were on their way down to run in the big Festival Of Speed meeting at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.
The Mike and Adam Azzie yard have last year’s runner up Bartholdi as well as Supreme Warrior in the Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint over 1200m.
Adam said about the five-year-old Act Of War gelding Bartholdi, “He is seven points higher in the merit ratings this year, but is carrying only 1kg more. He has had a very good prep and is spot on. He was very unlucky last year. The speed was in the middle and he was caught behind horses on the inside who could not keep up with that pace. Hopefully, it works out differently this year. It is very competitive but he comes with a lively chance as I can’t fault his preparation.”
Talking about four-year-old Vercingetorix colt Supreme Warrior he said, “He has an issue we have tried to keep on top of and if it is not a factor and he is able to finish as well as he did as a three-year-old he has a chance.”
Both horses travelled to Cape Town for the Gr 1 Pongracz Cape Flying Championship, but Adam knew they were on the back foot after getting a first hand view of what a vector float was all about. They had to travel on vector protected transport due to quarantine protocols.
“The ventilation was poor, so the horses began sweating, and there was no stop over. We were on the back foot under those conditions and I think a line can be drawn through those runs.”
The fact Bartholdi finished just 1,85 lengths back in fourth gives an inkling of how good he is.
Vercingetorix already has three Gr 1 winners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville and Bartholdi must have a fine chance, although he has got the same tricky number one draw as last year.
Bartholdi was seven lengths back in the Gr 1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint last time out, but was drawn on the wrong side and he will probably appreciate the step up in trip as a horse who has won once over 1500m before and also over 1450m.
Craig Zackey rides Bartholdi and Diego De Gouveia is on Supreme Warrior.
The yard run the luckless Gimme A Shot in the Gr 1 SA Fillies Sprint.
Adam said, “She has been unlucky in two of her last three starts. This is a very tough race. Princess Calla is in a league of her own and Desert Miracle has to be respected and also Iphiko finished just half-a-length behind Princess Calla over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth receiving just 2kg so if the HWB Scottsville 1200m doesn’t fine her out. Gimme A Shot does have speed, although they might be a bit quicker than her here. That does not worry me though, I will be happy if it works out like that, and if it doesn’t and she is up with the pace I know she is not a tearaway.”
He added, “Hollywoodbets Scottsville sprint races these days appear to depend a lot on how the race pans out and who is getting pulled through by the right horse.”
He is obviously hoping his trio end up in the right place in the running, which was not the case with Bartholdi last year.

Ryan Moore previews his Epsom day two rides
This includes his mount in the 244th running of the Derby
-
Betfair ambassador Ryan Moore has four rides on day two of the meeting in Surrey
-
The Derby – the fourth Classic of the season – takes place at 1.30pm with Moore aboard well-fancied Auguste Rodin
-
Moore was speaking exclusively to Betfair.
12.50 – Regal Reality
He ran pretty much as expected in the face of a stiff task on ground too soft for him at Newmarket last month and a much better run can be expected here.
He is an eight-year-old now but if he returns to the form of his Windsor Group 3 win or his Sandown second last year, then he has a fair shout on ground he will enjoy a lot more than at Newmarket first time up.
The trip may be on the sharp side for him, but hopefully he will be fine. He is well up to this grade on his day, and there is no stand-out in here.
1.30 – Auguste Rodin
It’s about as open a Derby as you could wish for. I have a lot of time for the Lingfield winner Military Order, I like the look of Leopardstown winner Sprewell, while Passenger and Arrest deserve their places towards the top of the market.
Passenger arguably has the most potential of them all and hopefully this doesn’t come too soon for him in his career. Whether he will stay the extra 2f or so is another question he has to answer but the talent is there.
Adelaide River, second to Arrest at Chester, is better than he showed last time but he could have fared better with his draw in 14. Clearly, San Antonio has a bit more going for him as it stands.
I thought Alder would be hard to beat in the Dee Stakes but he got the job done well and in the manner of a colt firmly on the up.
Auguste Rodin has been there and done it in Group 1 company, and I wouldn’t be in a rush to write him off after his no-show in the Guineas. Not that the betting has, I see. I’d stick a line straight through that run and concentrate on his juvenile form and his pedigree which strongly suggests 1m4f will be far more his trip than a mile.
Of course, he needs to bounce back after Newmarket and not many Derby winners have come into the Classic having been so soundly beaten on their previous start, but we hope he is the exception. He is in good shape and his draw in 10 is okay. As I have said, though, it’s a very open race and more than a few will be fancying their chances.
2.10 – Potapova
She was not herself last time, and the vet reported she had an irregular heartbeat afterwards. Whatever it was, it certainly wasn’t her true running. She has it to prove here then but she obviously wouldn’t be here if we weren’t completely happy with her at home and, at her best, she has a lot going for her, including a second in this race last season.
At her best, Prosperous Voyage is probably the one to beat as an unpenalized Group 1 winner.
4.30 – Caius Chorister
He was actually in the Coronation Cup at the five-day stage but this obviously makes a lot more sense off a mark of 99, given that Group 1 race has attracted five good horses who are all well at home in that grade.
He has a very good record around here, with just one defeat in three starts, and that was his best effort yet when second here on heavy ground last time, conditions which may have been too deep for him. He went up 2lb for that run but he still has a lot to recommend him, and better ground will suit him.

Starting stalls
Today’s Question
When were starting stalls first used at the Epsom Derby?

Epsom derby start
Before that a line of five wires suspended at head height and held in place by springs were used, the start effected when the springs were released.
