New Era Begins For KZN Racing
Gold Circle members in a special general meeting held earlier this evening have approved the financial rescuing and taking over of the company by Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings (Pty) Limited together with Gregory Mark Bortz.
On 06 April 2023 Gold Circle received an Expression of Interest (EOI) from Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings (Pty) Limited, together with Gregory Mark Bortz, to acquire the share equity held in Gold Circle by Gold Circle Racing Club. The Board of Directors considered the EOI at a meeting held on 20 April 2023 and agreed to progress negotiations to consummate a possible positive outcome.
The Board of Directors of Gold Circle and Gold Circle Racing Club met on 24 August 2023 and unanimously approved a Capital Contribution and Share Sale Agreement with Hollywood Sportsbook Holdings (Pty) Limited (Hollywoodbets) which required the approval of Club Members before proceeding with the sale.
A Special General Meeting of Gold Circle Racing Club Members took place on 19 September 2023 and Members approved the Capital Contribution and Share Sale Agreement. The Sale Transaction will now follow its normal course through application for approval by the Competition Commission, followed by due process through the KwaZulu-Natal Gaming and Betting Board.
“We are delighted that Members have approved this transaction that will secure horse racing in the province for at least the next five years and that the many stakeholders who rely on this very important industry will continue to be supported through this decision,” said Sadha Naidoo, Chairman of Gold Circle.
On behalf of Hollywoodbets, its CEO, Suren Rampersadh responded, “We take this opportunity to express appreciation to the Members of Gold Circle Racing Club and to all stakeholders for their confidence in Hollywoodbets by supporting this acquisition. We are fully committed to securing the future of the horse racing industry in KwaZulu-Natal. Horse racing has found itself in the doldrums for a number of years and its rebirth is long overdue. Under the leadership of Chairman Designate, Greg Bortz, we are confident that the transformation being experienced in the Western Cape will be replicated on the east coast. We will now work hard to achieve all the necessary regulatory approvals to bring this revival to fruition.”

Rabada Stallion Day Ignites Interest In Wartburg-based Stalwart
Rabada was brought down from his Bloomhill Stud home in Wartburg to Summerveld on Saturday for a stallion day with a difference and Bloomhill’s Sandra Threthewey was thrilled with all aspects of the event.
She said, “There was a beautiful vibe and Rabada behaved like a dream. He is such a calm and collected horse. He stood under the tree for an hour-and-a-half with his groom before being paraded and he then walked and stood and didn’t do anything funny, so people understood what I have been saying about his temperament. They always say ‘But he is by Brave Tin Soldier’ and Brave Tin Soldiers can be highly strung. But I think everybody realised that with 65 odd people standing watching him and he did not do a thing wrong … and he stood still so everybody could photograph him … everybody said, ‘Wow!!’ He has got the most magnificent temperament!”
She continued, “It was phenomenal. There was a mixture of people from breeders, to owners and trainers, and also farriers and vets. He was well received and it was a positive, good eventy for our industry which needs positive vibes and a postive attitude for the future. The feedback has been positive and we have some nice new business. Between Saturday and Sunday evening he had got an extra ten mares already. Some people who couldn’t make it to the stallion day came to the farm on Sunday and two more clients are coming to the farm this week to see him and chat about mares.”
She added, “We have had phone calls from the Cape and they are looking at mares they can send and they said if they don’t have mares they are going to buy mares to send.”

Pink Moon in the yellow and black Mauritzfontein silks is seen running on for third in today’s first race over 1000m behind the winner, the Paul Reeves-trained Amethystic (William Longsword) and the Candice Bass-Robinson-trained Strata (Canford Cliffs) (Picture: Wayne Marks).
The Diamonds Keep Coming…
The Pedigree Obsessor
One fascinating aspect of this industry is how quietly quality arrives unheralded, usually from some of the industry’s breeding powerhouses. Here is another.
A filly PINK MOON (Sea The Moon x Banbury) silently slipped onto the racecard in R1 at Durbanville on 19 September from the Yard of Brett Crawford, tellingly bred and owned by Mauritzfontein and Wilgerbosdrift. That she ran a very credible 3rd over a distance at least 4 to 5 furlongs short of that she was bred for may well be a good marker for what is to come.
She is from a bloodline not seen before but nevertheless rich in potential and of the sort that should cause the lenses of many, as it does this Professor, to steam up rather quickly.
By a son of the mighty SEA THE STARS, crossed to a MONSUN female line, out of a broodmare by M&W’s very own outstanding HORSE CHESTNUT makes this a very exciting prospect.
SEA THE MOON was an exciting prospect who in his short career, before being forced to retire through injury, achieved a race record of 5 runs 4 wins 1 second over distances of 10 to 12 furlongs. In his final race he ran 2nd in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe whereafter his prior injury was detected as having reappeared.
BANBURY, another M&W homebred, boasts a 5 run 2 win 1 second record over distances of 6 to 8 furlongs. PINK MOON is her 3rd foal and arguably the best of them by far.
In true family tradition it looks like another diamond might just have been discovered.

Henderson confirms hurdles campaign for Constitution Hill
Reigning champion will not make fences switch this term
At The Races
Constitution Hill will stay over hurdles this season, trainer Nicky Henderson has announced.
The six-year-old is unbeaten in seven career starts to date, with six of those victories at Grade One level, including a nine-length triumph in last season’s Champion Hurdle.
Following Constitution Hill’s Aintree Hurdle verdict in April, Henderson, owner Michael Buckley and jockey Nico de Boinville discussed a possible switch to chasing over the summer.
However, they have now decided to remain over the smaller obstacles, with another Champion Hurdle success the ultimate aim.
Henderson told the PA news agency: “The news on Constitution Hill is that after a lot of deliberating and a lot of advice from everybody in the world, because everybody wants a piece of this, he is going to stay over hurdles.
“At the end of the day I don’t think it was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. People will ask if we’ve schooled him over fences and why have we come to this decision.
“He would jump fences with his eyes shut, if we wanted him to, but the basis of the decision was we had to be 100 per cent sure that he would stay three and a quarter miles (in the Gold Cup).
“There was nothing to be gained by switching to fences by running in an Arkle, Champion Chase and possibly a Ryanair, great races though they are, but the Champion Hurdle is the Champion Hurdle, so if you are going to run in anything you might as well stick to what you know.
“I dare say there will be plenty of people saying this is unimaginative, but there was no doubt in Nico’s (De Boinville) mind, stamina was likely to be a major issue and the only point in doing it was if one felt he could become a Gold Cup horse.”
“For all three of us the decision was unanimous. You might say why did it take three months, but we all felt it was the right decision.”
Should Constitution Hill have gone down the chasing route, the dream was to emulate Dawn Run, the only horse to have won a Champion Hurdle and Gold Cup.
By staying over hurdles, such is his superiority over the division at the moment, the aim could be to match the five previous three-time winners, one of which is Henderson’s See You Then, or even potentially take the record outright with four.
“The great thing is he is young enough (to break records). If you were going to go chasing it would have to be now,” said Henderson.
“By not doing it, this is the decision for the time being but you never say never. He’s six now so he’ll be seven in March.
“Where we’ve been very lucky over the last two years is we’ve had very uncomplicated preparations, we’ve had two seasons without any issues. Any trainer will tell you there aren’t many horses who do that without a blip. We’ve had a really good run and you’ve got to have that luck.
“The main thing is we know exactly what we’ve got to try to do. We’ll start off in the Fighting Fifth, then there’s only 20-odd days until the Christmas Hurdle.
“This year what is different is they have moved the Unibet International to Trials Day at Cheltenham (January 27) when it used to be in December. That gives us another race potentially, before Cheltenham in March.
“We’ll see what happens after that because then you have Aintree and Punchestown.
“We have ummed and ahhed a bit, but if he can run around breaking track records over two miles, how on earth is he going to stay three and a quarter?
“He’s only had seven races in his life, three in his first year, the two at Sandown and the Supreme and then four last year. We want to run him as much as everybody hopefully wants to see him, moving the International gives us another opportunity.”
