Olivia's Way To Headline The London News
Olivia’s Way can get back into the winner’s enclosure on Saturday at Turffontein (JC Photos)
The Turffontein Standside nine race meeting on Valentine’s Day on Saturday is headed by the Gr 3 Betway London News Stakes over 1800m and it could be a good opportunity for the classy Betway Summer Cup runner up Olivia’s Way.
Olivia’s Way will enjoy the tough 1800m trip and on official ratings is only half-a-kilogram under sufferance with the best weighted runner Fire Attack, who is under a bit of a cloud at present. Olivia’s Way loves the Turffontein Standside track and although she would probably prefer 2000m the advantage she has at the weights here makes her the one to beat from a middle draw of four out of ten. However, the form of jockey Ryan Munger is a touch concerning. Last year, during the off season for his base in Canada, he had 38 wins out here at a strike rate of 19.19 and was the fourth most successful jockey in his three month stint. This season he has only had six wins at 8.96% so far in his stint and is the 15th most successful jockey in the period he has been here. The other filly in the race is Willy Meet Again, who is officially 4,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted, but she is on the up and this William Longsword four-year-old should enjoy the trip being out of a Philanthropist mare. The Ultimate King was third in the Summer Cup, beaten 1,50 lengths by Olivia’s Way, but he is now 1,5kg worse off. He is held in high regard and the best might not have been seen of this four-year-old Vercingetorix gelding yet. Fire Attack would be the automatic choice if he was at his best. However, he did not have a good preparation for the L’Ormarins King’s Plate and then finished a lacklustre last, so he has probably been freshened up and will likely need this run, which is likely part of his preparation for the Gr 1 Premiers Champions Challenge on April 4. Busstopinhounslow has a lively chance as he will relish the course and distance. He is half-a-kilogram worse off with Olivia’s Way for a 2,30 length beating in the Summer Cup but was a touch unlucky in that race.
In the first leg of the Pick 6 over 1160m Taskmaster ran second to a promising sort in Stoneywood last time and can go one better. Scorpio ran a good second last time and the form has been franked by fourth-placed King Redoute coming out and winning. Warning Light is by Gimmethegreenlight out of Gr 1 winner Siren’s Call (Elusive Fort) and would not have to be a superstar to win this. Stokesy has shown enough to be able to earn here. Sky Pilot disappointed last time but can do better and can’t be ignored.
In the fifth race over 1400m Sutherland won with authority last time and can repeat the feat despite a six point raise as he has some good overall form in his career and an 85 merit rating is about right. Salute The Flag is off a competitive mark and can be involved from a fair draw. Bristol Hercules has always struck as one with plenty of ability and he is well drawn over a suitable trip. It’s Personal is in fine form and should be right there if able to overcome a wide draw under Muzi Yeni. Paul Revere is a distance-suited hard-knocker but he has a wide draw.
In the sixth over 1400m Winds Of Grace won her maiden with authority over 1600m and looks capable of rising above this merit rating of 70. Peregrine Falcon is knocking hard and should be right there again from a plum draw. Mocha Frappe has probably not fulfilled her potential to date so she would not be a surprise winner. Oklahoma Smokeshow is in good form and from a good draw should be in the shake up. Vava Vegas is knocking hard and should be in the shake up.
In the eighth over 1160m Night Bomber has been ultra consistent since arriving from the Cape and is distance suited so should be right there off his current competitive mark. Black Egret has the ability to contest the finish here and should be cherry ripe having his third run after a layoff. Frozen Fantasy has some fine recent form and should be in the shake up. Gimmethegoodlife has pace and the ability to kick on so should be thereabouts. The Specialist was promising as a two-year-old and won last time after a steady drop from a merit rating of 115 to 88. He could follow up.
In the last race over 1160m One Tiger bounced back with a good run last time over 1200m and is only one point higher. Legendary is capable of a strong finish and has a chance. Longsword is also able to run on well and can earn with a clear run. Can You Danse has the form to be able to earn in this line up off a much reduced merit rating. Captain Selvie is in fine form and has a chance despite having to carry topweight.
In Race 3, the first leg of the PA over 1160m, Traditional Belief made a good debut and the form has turned out to seem better than the form of Miss Fantastic.
In the first race over 1160m Staggerwing made a good debut to finish second to the smart Secretary Bird and is an obvious choice here.
In the second race over 1160m Prayersandpromises in the one to beat but Dear Doc also made a good debut and with expected improvement should be right there. Ehhfifteenkjoe has run two decent races against good sorts and Sherlock Holmes made a fair debut against a promising sort. Stage One should show some improvement.
Ireland Forever Could Close Out The Durbanville Meeting
By Mark van Deventer (Race Coast)
Des Mclachlan and Grant van Niekerk recorded a double (Noble Hero & Double Dash) at Hollywoodbets Durbanville’s mid-week meet on Wednesday and might have made it a treble with Dawn’s Early Light, if it weren’t for a dramatic resurgence by Richard Fourie on a resolute Sooty.
The talented van Niekerk seems Mauritius bound, but for the time being will try boost his SA tally with Milnerton-based supporter, McLachlan, who has his string in fighting form. They step out stable star, JET FORCE in Race 8’s headliner, a Progress Plate where the class-dropping 4YO gelding is officially handicapped a good thing.
JET FORCE performed credibly when taking on the best milers in the land in the Ridgemont Green Point Stakes Gr 2 and L’Ormarins King’s Plate Gr 1, which has seen his official merit rating bump up big time to 115. On Saturday, the son of Master Of My Fate jumps from the outer gate (8) and turns back to seven panels, a distance over which he has won before at this course.
That said, he will need to be razor-sharp to see off POWERANDTHEGLORY, who could be extremely dangerous over 1400m at the country course, after just missing in a torridly run race won by Snow Pilot on World Sports Betting Cape Town Met Day. Justin Snaith’s entry is now in the form of his life and should work out a good trip racing handy under Andrew Fortune while tracking likely leaders, blinkered CAPTAIN WEST and JET FORCE’s stable mate, DEVIL A SAINT.
BEWARE enters the reckoning on the Roland Garros clash with POWERANDTHEGLORY, as does Greg Ennion’s MISS WORLD on the pick of her top ratings, though quite how she fares over 1400m is hard to predict.
In the preceding race, Ennion, who also saddled a double on Wednesday with Loui’s Star and developing stayer, Fort Liam, sends out ALL IS GREEN. She is lightly raced at intervals so comes with a “hazardous material” warning, yet this is precisely the sort of race she can come to light in.
The 2x winning daughter of Captain of All has previously triumphed in higher grade races off bigger merit ratings (86 as opposed to a current mark of 75) and now drops into calmer waters. She showed signs of zest at her comeback run under Craig Zackey in mid-January behind Dame Of Trix, and has a neat record second run after a layoff. Zackey sticks solid and she can pop up with SAACHI ONE and DECEMBER DAWN, her principal dangers.
BONELLI is a progressive 3YO from Bass Racing. Improvement has been forthcoming at each successive start since gelding, and the Master of My Fate gelding gave Prairie Dawn a fright last time over this course and distance.
Making just a bit more improvement should see him exit the Maiden ranks. Aldo Domeyer rides – he and Bass share a tidy 21% winning strike rate and 47% place stat.
BONELLI is thus the pick in Race 3. He probably has most to fear from PROTECTOR OF PEACE, who should go smoothly from Draw 3 under J P van der Merwe’s guidance, and returning older Maiden TUNGUSKA, ridden by Andrew Fortune for Ricky Maingard.
Single race exotics tickets can place GOLD GOLD BABY, WATERFRONT and OH SO ONEDERFUL in the lower positions.
Punters face a dilemma in Race 9, where IRELAND FOREVER sports appealing credentials but is drawn 11 in the finale, a Class 4 over 1400m. His hold up style of racing is also not quite in sync with a track profile which tends to favor on-pace runners.
Those two strikes against him may be enough to put bettors off, but the visual image of him hurtling through a late gap and blasting clear of reopposing CARRIACOU at this Class level in November is more positive.
Granted, he will need luck to jink past a full field in the Hollywoodbets Durbanville straight but can win in this grade if getting the breaks in time under Sean Veale. Stable mate, SAN PEDRO, together with IT IS MY TIME, BOOGIEFIED and pace-presser GRAN CANARIA, should ensure a high velocity early clip which might just tee it up for a nimble closer like IRELAND FOREVER.
MARCUS AURELIUS also possesses a powerful turn of finishing speed. He jumps from the inside alley and is another late running threat.

(Brandon Bailey: 8 – 3 – 1 – 7)
Race 6
1 MARKETA has been rested for 91 days, she is much better than her recent form, the tongue tie has been removed, she is a speedy filly with lots of ability, if she bounces back to her best form from a good draw on Saturday, she can win a race like this. 6 ALL IS GREEN stayed on well for third behind Dame Of Trix on the 13th of January at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, the blinkers stay on, she definitely has a winning chance on her best form. 4 SAACHI ONE ran a much better race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 21st of January, she finished just under three lengths behind Wyze Declaration, she has dropped further in the ratings, and she has a good draw, watch for a big performance from this filly. 3 WILLIAM’S WOMAN ran fifth in the same race as Saachi One last time, she has a low weight on her back on Saturday, and she has a neat draw, she will be there amongst the places at a decent price. (Brandon Bailey: 1 – 6 – 4 – 3)
Race 7
4 LADY LOOK ALIKE finished just under two lengths behind Black Path on the 17th of January, she drops in trip on Saturday, and she has dropped further in the ratings, on her best form, she can win a race like this quite easily. 3 STAR WORLD caught the eye late for third behind Wyze Declaration on the 21st of January, she absolutely loves Hollywoodbets Durbanville, top jockey Richard Fourie sticks with this filly from a good draw, she will go close to winning. 7 BLACK ERIKA stayed on nicely for third behind True Horizon on the 4th of January, she is a young filly that is improving with racing, if the gaps open at the right time, she will be competitive. 2 DU MAURIER drifted in the market badly last time, she finished just under two lengths behind Worldly on the 13th of January, she has dropped further in the ratings, and she has a good draw, watch for big improvement. (Brandon Bailey: 4 – 3 – 7 – 2)
Race 8
8 JET FORCE is much better than his run in the L’Ormarins King’s Plate Gr 1, he finished just over six lengths behind The Real Prince, even though he has a tricky draw here, he is very smart, with some luck in running, he will be hard to beat. 5 BEWARE quickened up well to finish just under one length behind Roland Garros on the 10th of January, the yard thinks highly of this colt, he will be competitive from a good draw. 6 POWERANDTHEGLORY must have a good each way chance in this field, he ran a great race for second behind Snow Pilot on the 31st of January, he is a beautiful looking gelding, include him into all bets. 3 CAPTAIN WEST was heavily backed in the market when finishing fourth behind Kinda Wonderful on the 4th of January, he has dropped in the ratings, and the blinkers have been fitted, watch him closely. Race 9

Hollywoodbets Scottsville Sunday Formguides And Selections
R1 Summary: This could rest between stable companions BEST OF ALL (2) and PLACE OF PRACTICE (1) both trained by Gareth van Zyl. Best Of All started favourite on debut but found one too good. He should come on from that run. Place Of Practice has finished runner-up at his last two and Sean Veale rides for Hollywood Racing. GOOD OMEN (7) was a beaten favourite in an Open Maiden last run giving the winner 7kg in what was a smart effort. SAIL THE HORIZON (8) has not been two far back with both starts behind in the soft. He can come on from that. (Andrew Harrison: 2-1-7-8).
R2 Summary: SPIRIT OF SHIMLA (9) has been knocking at the door. She was a close-up second over the trip last time out. TAYLOR’S VERSION (2) has shown consistent Cape form. Cape form tends to stand up well in KZN and she should make a bold bid. WARRIOR ROSE (13) is lightly raced and does appear to have issues with lengthy breaks between her two starts. She comes off a rest from a wide draw but the stable is in form. MISS DANON (3) has shown some recent improvement and can do better over this shorter trip. (Andrew Harrison: 9-2-13-3).
R3 Summary: DAY TWO (1) has come on nicely and was touched off over course and distance last time out. On that showing he has the measure of a few others in the field. The filly SPANISH FEUD (3) has shown signs of coming to hand. She was a well-beaten third last outing but the blinkers are back on, the trip should suit and Keagan de Melo stays with the ride. QUICKSMART (4) goes this distance for the first time but made a fair local debut. If he stays the trip he could threaten. WILLIAM OF ORANGE (8) jumps in trip but has Callan Murray aboard and may be worth watching in the market. (Andrew Harrison: 1-3-4-8).
R4 Summary: CURIOUS GIRL (7) is lightly raced and won well first up after a break. That run should have brought her on a little more over a trip that should suit with a handy galloping weight. SPECTACULAR (5) is holding form well and stays the trip. He should make his presences felt. PAST AND PRESENT (6) has run well over this trip in the Cape. He has shown up well in two smart for his new stable and can follow up. HODGEPODGE (8) is back over an ideal trip and gets first time blinkers. RODRIGUEZ (9) has gone off a little at his last two but is back over a suitable trip. (Andrew Harrison: 7-6-5-8).
R5 Summary: Competitive handicap. Veteran BANZAI PIPELINE (6) has been running consistently but switches to the turf. However, he takes on a modest line-up and should feature. I AM CLASSY (5) has come to hand at recent outings. He had a wide draw last run and takes on slightly weaker here. COOL WIND (1) has shown steady form since her maiden win and could improve further over this trip. BASIE RAAKVAT (10) is always dangerous and has shown up well at long odds in his last two. (Andrew Harrison: 6-5-1-10).
R6 Summary: Tricky handicap with many in with chances. SONATA SAMARITAN (8) has only been out of the money twice in ten outings. She has gone very close at her last two and Rachel Venniker’s allowance could make all the difference. PROM QUEEN (9) has been consistent of late and her last win was over the distance. She has a fair weight. LADY SABRINA (11) comes with steady Highveld form. She also benefits from Mickaella Michel’s allowance which is definitely in her favour. Stable companions GRAND OCCASION (12) and RANI TARABAI (13) have both drawn wide. The latter is 4kg better off with her stable companion given their last meeting and S’Manga Khumalo looks to be on the ‘right’ one of the pair. (Andrew Harrison: 8-9-11-13).
R7 Summary: Wide open. JAZZ FESTIVAL (1) has been knocking at the door for some time now. He drops in class and although taking a corresponding rise in weight he does have the best of the draw. MISSISSIPPI SPICE (5) was a good second behind MOUNTAINSOFTHEMOON (11) when last they met. The former is now 1.5kg better off and can turn the tables. VENCEDOR (2) showed up well at long odds first run out of the maidens. He has a much better draw this trim around and can go one better. SWORD SPEED (7) is back from a break but has two smart efforts to his name. He may just need it but cannot be left out of any exotics. (Andrew Harrison: 1-5-2-7).
R8 Summary: TALK TO THE MASTER (9) has some smart Cape form to his credit and made a promising debut for his new stable. He can get Domini Zackey off the mark since his arrival in KZN. JP’S PALACE (5) has been consistent in the lower divisions but comes into the race off a light weight and first time cheek pieces. CYMRIC (13) has a wide draw to contend with but has been coming to hand slowly. He steps up in trip but looks primed. Peter Muscutt has been quiet locally with his recent focus on Cape Town but DYLAN’S CHAMP (3) made a smart debut first up for the stable and first time blinkers. He is smart on his day. MADISON VALLEY (7) made no show in the Betway Summer Cup but prior to that won well over a distance many thought would be too short. He has his first run for a new stable. (Andrew Harrison: 9-5-13-3).
R9 Summary: Wide open. CLEARTHERUNWAY (5) has shown up well in two starts out of the maidens. He meets COWDRAY PARK (4) on 2.5kg better terms and can turn the tables although the latter is climbing the handicap slowly and has a chance of a hattrick. INDUSTRIALSTRENGTH (11) has his third run back after a spell in the Cape. He was a beaten favourite at his last two and can go one better. MISTER NIBBLES (9) started at long odds last run but showed up well behind MAGMA MAGIC (1) and is now 5kg better off in the handicap. HARUN AL RASHID (13) has a difficult draw to contend with but is useful on his day and this trip suits. (Andrew Harrison: 5-11-9-4).
R10 Summary: COWBOY COUNTRY (5) shows promise and was not far back to much stronger last time out. He drops in class and should feature. CHICARITO (2) surprised on debut beating THE MARQUEE (10) who started at even longer odds. The Marquee has since franked that form. DAPPER (11) is long overdue another win. He has been trying further but may now prefer this trip. He has a claiming apprentice up with first time cheek pieces. THE MASK (9) has been runner-up and a beaten favourite at his last two but has gone up a further three points in the ratings. (Andrew Harrison: 5-11-2-10).
41st Asian Racing Conference Had Strong, Stimulating Discussions
The 41st Asian Racing Conference (ARC) closed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia last night (Thursday, 12 February) at the Crowne Plaza Riyadh RDC Hotel and Convention Centre, with Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges, Chair, Asian Racing Federation and Chief Executive Officer, The Hong Kong Jockey Club, hailing the Conference as an enduring success which highlighted the sport’s greatest opportunities and also its challenges.
Praising the work of the Conference host, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia and His Royal Highness Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal, and the ARC Organising Committee, Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges said the ARC’s discussions reiterated the importance of increased collaboration and new technology as key motivators in safeguarding the sport’s future.
“If there is one message that cuts across all our discussions, it is this: the future of horse racing is under threat and can only be secured by working together to address the key challenges we face,” Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges said at the ceremony crowned by the official exchange of the ARC flag to New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, host of the 42nd ARC in New Zealand in 2028.
Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges continued: “I firmly believe we now have a mandate for change. We must act now. We must think and cooperate globally and implement nationally.”
“At the outset, I highlighted that we are in a critical phase for racing and breeding, and yet fragmentation within our sport is preventing us from tackling the challenges that confront us,” Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges said. “I called for global collaboration and the need to make fundamental changes to the way we position, promote and operate our sport.
“Coming back to the Conference itself, we have heard from global experts and leaders, and shared best practices and case studies from around the world, which we hope have been informative.”

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges continued: “We must create heroes, create global competitions where the best meet the best, and create platforms with holistic storytelling to increase our fan base and promote our sport globally. We must use technology to create new digital onsite and online experiences. We must be more agile and embrace global initiatives like the World Pool to better compete against sports betting, iGaming and other entertainment offerings.
“We must continue our investment in science and technology to minimise the risk of catastrophic breakdowns and sudden death. The ARF Secretariat will develop an action plan of key activities for the short and medium term, to be discussed at the next Executive Council meeting. We will then communicate how we take the next steps together.”
Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges praised the Conference’s speakers, who attended from all around the world, had provided thought-provoking examinations of the industry’s most pressing issues.
“I would also like to extend my gratitude to our speakers who have generously shared their time, expertise and insights,” he said.
“Staging such a wonderful event would not have been possible without the work done by our host, the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia, and the ARC Organising Committee. Thank you, His Royal Highness Prince Bandar bin Khalid Al Faisal – your team has done a wonderful job.
“Last not least, my sincere thanks go to our truly outstanding moderator David Eades. As always, his expertise, poise and ability to guide the discussions and engage the audience over the past three days have been instrumental in making this Conference a huge success. Finally, I would like to wish you all a Kung Hei Fat Choi for the Year of the Horse which begins on Tuesday (17 February). May it be a fantastic year for you and for the sport of horse racing.”
At Monday’s (9 February) opening ceremony, it was announced the Asian Racing Federation has unanimously re-elected Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges as Chair, Asian Racing Federation, a term which runs until the conclusion of the 42nd ARC in New Zealand in 2028.
