Sean Veale signals his fourth winner to the photographers at Hollywoodbets Greyville today as he brings home the Duncan Howells-trained Hollywood Syndicate-owned Purple Operator (Captain Of All) (Candiese Lenferna).
Veale In Fine Form On The Poly
The sixth race saw Keagan de Melo making it a double as the Dean Kannemeyer-trained William Rufus provided yet another winner for the flying William Longsword. William Rufus was bred by Cheveley Stud. He brought Cape Town form and led from start to finish in the 1400m contest to win by 1,20 lengths from Gentleman’s Way. The DK Racing syndicate are the owners of William Rufus and a number of them were on course to shout the three-year-old gelding home. Bruce Armstrong, a third generation member of a staunch KZN racing family, was the syndicate spokesman in the post race interview.
Veale clinched his four-timer on the Howells-trained Purple Operator, who gave Hollywood a double on the day. He dived down the inside from a handy position and the Keivan-bred Captain Of All gelding held on easily by 1,05 lengths.
The last race over 1000m saw a blanket finish but the pacemaker Iron Bark, a Gareth van Zyl-trained four-year-old Flower Alley gelding , held on under Athandiwe Mgudlwa to record his fifth career win. Iron Bark was bred by Dr. IR Heyns and is owned by GG and D Palmer.

There appears to have been a steady decline in the sprinting class in the last few seasons considering this century South African breeding has produced the like of Nhlavini (National Emblem), National Colour (National Assembly), Mythical Flight (Jet Master out of a Harry Hotspur mare), J J The Jet Plane (Jet Master), Val De Ra (Var), Shea Shea (National Emblem), What A Winter (Western Winter), Via Africa (Var) and Carry On Alice (Captain Al).
Two of What A Winter’s three Grade 1 winners are sprinters but Warrior’s Rest and Russet Air are hardly in the class of National Colour, Mythical Flight and J J The Jet Plane et al.

Two Senior Jockeys Stood Down After “Jockey Room Incident”
Senior jockeys Billy Jacobson and Muzi Yeni were stood down and replaced on all their remaining rides following a jockey room ‘incident’ after the first race at Hollywoodbets Greyville today (Monday).
The suspension of both riders was made at the request of the duty Stipes and applied to the current racemeeting only, but could be extended.
Commentator Sheldon Peters informed the public of Yeni’s replacement by Sean Veale for race two and notified them of him being booked off for all of his remaining six rides.
Jacobson did not ride in race 1 but was due to ride in race 4 and race 8.
Peters added that there would be an inquiry into the jockeys being booked off which told the story of something untoward having happened.
However, no details could be divulged at this early stage because of the incident being subject to a formal inquiry process.
The NHA will keep the public informed of the proceedings.
