Elusive Winter is led in by Michelle Rix and Grant Knowles after an impressive debut win on Tuesday (Chase Liebenberg).
Elusive Winter To Stay Put In Cape Town
Michelle Rix spoke of the excitement of the Harold Crawford and Michelle Rix yard’s first ever treble at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday.
What made it more rewarding was it was no ordinary low key April Cape Town meeting, but instead had full fields and decent competitors throughout.
Michelle said Elusive Winter, a two-year-old colt who got the ball rolling on Tuesday, had been the standout lot of the De Grendel February Sale last year and she had gone over her budget to secure him for R325,000.
She had liked everything about him, including the pedigree.
A particular aspect of the pedigree she liked was he has the reverse cross that Kommetdieding has.
Kommetdieding is by Fort Wood stallion Elusive Fort out of a Captain Al mare, while Elusive Winter is by Captain Al stallion Captain Of All out of a Caesour mare who is out of a full-sister to Elusive Fort.
Jockey JP van der Merwe was thankful to Gavin Lerena for phoning him while he was suspended and advising him to try and get on this “quality” colt.
Elusive Winter in fact achieved the unusual feat of beating older horses on debut in a Maiden Plate over 1000m in the April of his two-year-old season.
He showed fine natural speed to be just off the pace and was doing it effortlessly.
He then displayed a superb turn of foot to put the race to bed and win easing up by half-a-length.
Elusive Winter is owned by Fiona Carmichael’s Westward Bloodstock Ltd.
The Klawervlei Stud-bred colt’s half-brother by Rafeef sold at the Cape Sales Premier Yearling Sale for R750,000.
Michelle said Elusive Winter would stay in Cape Town for the winter to preserve him for a much anticipated three-year-old campaign, although she intends running him in the Grade 3 Winter Nursery over 1100m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on May 10.
Elusive Winter has every chance of developing into a classic horse.
Captain Of All, despite being a champion sprinter, gets them to stay and Elusive Winter’s dam, Elusive Spirit, is a half-sister to Elusive Silva (Silvano), who won the Grade 2 Greyville 1900, the Grade 3 Winter Derby, the Grade 3 Cup Trial over 1800m, the Listed Sledgehammer over 1800m and was third in the July.
Michelle is also excited about the Master Of My Fate three-year-old filly Hierkommiebokkie, who impressed on Tuesday when stepped up to 1400m for the first time.
Running off a 79 merit rating after one previous win, the tall filly made a bee-line for the front under Grant van Niekerk.
In the straight she galloped resolutely and continually increased the gap between her and the opposition without any extraordinary effort.
She won by 2,25 lengths after being eased before the line.
She is one of a handful of horses Michelle has taken to KZN for the SA Champions Season.
She said she would see how she progressed before thinking of a feature, but she does predict a bright future for this Mayesh Chetty-bred filly.
Mayesh part-owns her in partnership with Bram van Huysteen, in whose colours she runs.
The Crawford-Rix yard’s other winner on the day was Captain Of All filly She’s My Captain.
This consistent four-year-old converted favouritism in a class 4 handicap over 1000m under Richard Fourie and she looks like she can progress beyond her current merit rating, which has been increased from 69 to 72 after the win.

Fort Lauderdale (far side) ridden by Kelsey Mayhew-Munger beats Someday Maybe by a whisker at the Vaal today.
Photo Finish Today Prompts Recollections Of El Picha-Young Rake Controversy
The first race today at the Vaal straight course had a desperately close finish and there were bound to be conspiracy theories surfacing after the TV replay appeared to show Someday Maybe as perhaps the one to side with and the judges then awarding it to Fort Lauderdale.
It wasn’t long before a photo-finjish appeared on social media that “proved” it was a dead-heat … except the line on the horses’ noses had clearly been thickened.
The official photograph above clearly shows a discernible gap between Someday Maybe’s nose and the line and if there is a discernible gap a dead-heat can not be declared according to the rules.
During the ensuing discussion on social media the controversial finish to the 2000 Durban July surfaced.
The judges took an age to declare El Picha the winner over Young Rake that day.
The length of time it took to decide became one of the main points of the controversy, because it was surmised that if the judges had taken so long to discern a gap between the two horses it should surely have just been declared a dead-heat.
The length of time it took has become exaggerated over the years and in one version today it had increased to nearly three times more than the actual time it took!
In any case an article was written on the tenth anniversary of the controversy and two people who were in the judge’s box that day explained exactly what had transpired and why the decision had taken so long to be announced.
The article can be read below:
This year’s running of the Vodacom Durban July (2010) will mark the 10th anniversary of one of the most controversial results of the big race when El Picha was called the winner from Young Rake after what seemed an interminable wait by connections and punters.
He concluded by saying, “One thing we absolutely cannot do is change the position of the line and the horses on the photograph, which some pundits suggested was the reason we took so long to decide the 2000 July finish!”

Anathi Feni Is The Champion Workrider
Anathi Feni rode three winners in the final leg of the Workriders Challenge at the Vaal straight course today and added to the two wins he rode in the first leg of the Challenge that was enough to see him emerge the overall winner.
The second leg of the Work Riders’ Challenge fell victim to the heavy rains on the Highveld.
Phenisile Mongqawa went into the day on 32 points, with Feni on 30 points, Joe Gwingwizha on 28 and Chamu Mabaya in fourth place on 24 points.
Mongqawa increased his lead when winning the second race aboard the Robyn Klaasen-trained Futura filly Chateau Futura, who was backed in from 10/1 to 7/2.
Feni then failed on the favourite in the third and it was not looking too good for him, especially when he finished second last in the fourth race.
However, it all changed thanks to a 50/1 winner, the Corrie Lensley-trained Pomodoro gelding San Marzano. This horse had no form, but Feni took advantage of his high draw. There seemed to be a bias towards the outside down the straight and he stormed in by five lengths.
Feni then converted favouritism in the the next race, an 1800m race, on the hard-knocking Mike de Kock-trained On The Guest List. He earned his riding fee here with some hard driving in the straight when On The Guest List was challenged.
Feni sealed victory when winning the next on the progressive De Kock-trained Mambo Come Tesio, who relished the step up in trip to 1800m, as was expected.
Mongqawa won the last race on the Shaylen Naidoo-trained Carnelo, but it was too little too late.

“I thought we might pay the late entry fee and run him in the National on Saturday, how would that do? I don’t know what we’ll do, I just want to enjoy this and praise Nicky as he’s won with two horses today who were both winning their sixth Grade Ones. We’ll enjoy that, it’s enough for one day.”
