Greeting My Master Can Retain Victory Moon For Laird Yard
Greeting My Master is on the up, runs off a capped merit rating and is even then only 1,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted runner in the Gr 3 Betway Victory Moon Stakes and carries only 51kg. He is out of a useful Kahal sprinter but his sire Master Of My Fate imparts stamina and he nearly led from start to finish in the Gr 3 Sea Cottage Stakes from a wide draw over this course and distance in July. (JC Photos)
Alec Laird will be out to retain the Gr 3 Betway Victory Moon Stakes trophy at Turffontein Standside on Saturday, where he runs the up and coming Greeting My Master and the defending champion Atticus Finch.
Greeting My Master is progressive so could rise above his current 107 merit rating and that is actually a capped rating anyway, because he won a handicap over 1600m by 4,50 lengths last time out and could only be given a maximum of eight points. And yet he is only 1,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted, the Wilgerbosdrift Bridget Oppenheimer SA Oaks runner up My Soul Mate, and he only carries 51kg too. Chase Maujean rides from a good draw of six. Greeting My Master is by Master Of My Fate out of Kahal sprinter Eastern Greeting, who won the Gr 2 Camellia Stakes over 1160m. Master Of My Fate brings some stamina and the last time Greeting My Master tried this trip he only just failed to lead from start to finish in the Gr 3 TAB Sea Cottage Stakes despite having jumped from draw 12 of 12. He has won twice over 1600m since, but he is now more mature and just has that 51kg weight to carry, so could see it out.
Atticus Finch has proved he is up to his current merit rating and his record shows that he does not suffer from second run after a rest syndrome. He has a tricky draw of ten, but won it last year from draw eight with this same jockey, Calvin Habib up, so he should go close again.
Main Defender is also only 1,5kg out at the weights with My Soul Mate, although he does have to carry 62kg. He has a good draw of five and should have come on from his last start. If bouncing back to his best he is the one to beat but he is under a bit of a cloud at present, having produced below par performances in his last three starts.
My Soul Mate should equip herself well as the best weighted runner and has the underrated Jarryd Penny up. She has won coming from a layoff before, so should have come on from her last start, although she does have a tricky draw of nine to overcome.
Purple Pitcher is 4,5kg under sufferance with My Soul Mate but has won a Gr 1 over course and distance before and has a plum draw.
Safe Passage would win this easily if at his best off a merit rating that has dropped significantly, but he has had an extended period of below par form and does not inspire confidence.
Home Of The Brave is in fine form, but is 4,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted and has a wide draw.
Future Pearl ran a cracker in the Hollywoodbets Durban July and has the ability to go well here and has the ability to be a big runner in the Betway Summer Cup too. He is in a tricky 16th on the Summer Cup log meaning he can’t afford to run too badly, although ideally this would be a come on outing in preparation for the Summer Cup, being a big horse and it being his second run of the season.
Pure Predator has class and made a good comeback from a five month layoff, beaten 4,25 in a 1160m sprint behind William Robertson. He will likely come on from this run, but if close to his best will be a big runner.
Puerto Manzano is well drawn and would be one of the chief contenders if at his best, but he has given the impression his best days are behind him and he will need to bounce back.
Johnny Hero ran quite well in his comeback from a seven month layoff but has a wide draw to overcome.
Aragosta is capable on his day but has his second run after a moderate comeback and has a tricky draw and a 2,5kg claimer up who will not be allowed to claim in this Graded event.
Shoemaker is well drawn but needs to bounce back from a 20 length beating just one week ago in the Onamission Charity Mile and that run followed being pulled up in the July after suffering epistaxis.
Thunee Player is in good form and drawn in pole but is 8,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted.
They are selected in the order mentioned.

Be Merry Can Make Merry In The Laisserfaire
Be Merry (Lancaster Bomber) comes off a hattrick of impressive wins and is only half-a-kilogram under sufferance carrrying the minimum weight so could claim black type in the Listed Laisserfaire Stakes over 1100m (Picture: Wayne Marks)
Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Saturday Formguides And Selections
Race 1
4 ZEITZ had no luck in running from a wide draw at Hollywoodbets Durbanville in his last start, the blinkers have been fitted and he gets a good draw here, he should be very hard to beat on his best form. 1 TUNGUSKA needed his last run badly, the step up in trip from a good draw should help his chances tremendously, include him into all bet types. 3 EXPRESS YOURSELF moved down to the start exceptionally well in his last start, he is still improving and should be right there in the finish now that he steps up to 1600m for the first time. 5 BOMBERS IN THE SKY ran a lovely race last time behind Gnarly, if he can improve on that performance, he could sneak into the Quartets.
(Brandon Bailey: 4 – 1 – 3 – 5)
Race 2
2 STATE CAPITOL has been very consistent since her maiden win on the 23rd of August, from a good draw in this race, she will have a solid winning chance. 10 OZARK had no luck in running in his last start, he unfortunately draws wide here, if the race works out for him, he could easily win a race like this. 1 SUMMER NIGHT CITY will need to improve on her recent form to be competitive, she gets the perfect draw, and she drops further in the ratings, watch for big improvement at a decent price. 12 DREAM SEARCHER ran a much better race over 1400m in her last start, she steps back up in trip to 1600m, if she can get some luck in running from a terrible draw, she could sneak into the places.
(Brandon Bailey: 2 – 10 – 1 – 12)
Race 3
5 HOODIA ran a super race in his last start behind Song To The Moon, he was forced to do some work early in the race which unfortunately cost him victory, he should have no excuses from a good draw here, watch him closely. 10 SAIL THE SEAS won impressively last time against older horses, the yard think highly of this colt, if he can beat the trick draw, he will go very close to winning again. 3 MASTER OF PARIS never runs a bad race, he has been consistent through his career, if he can produce a similar performance here, he will be amongst the places. 2 HAPPY DAYS won really well with the blinkers fitted, he quickened up smartly to beat Dubbelosix, the form has been franked, he could earn again from a good draw.
(Brandon Bailey: 5 – 10 – 3 – 2)
Race 4
7 NIGHT BOMBER really enjoys the sprint trips at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, there is no doubt that he will be competitive in this tricky race. 3 BLACK EGRET needed his last run badly, on his best form at this level, despite the big weight on his back, he should have a good each way chance. 6 SILVER CROWN has been rested for a long time, his form is excellent, if he doesn’t need the run badly, he will be right there at the finish, include him into all bet types. 12 PIROSHKA is slowly starting to drop in the ratings, his last run was very good against some nice horses, watch him late at a decent price.
(Brandon Bailey: 7 – 3 – 6 – 12)
Race 5
1 CALL TO UNITE must have a huge winning chance with no weight on his back for this Listed event, he has won his last two starts very impressively, he now steps up in trip to 2500m, on his recent form, he will have a solid chance again. 9 FUTURE SWING would have needed his last run badly when finishing second, he is classy and he stays well, there is no doubt he will have a massive winning chance. 7 BARATHEON looked incredibly well moving to gates when beating Future Swing, Piet Botha and his team think highly of this individual, he must be included into all bets on his best form. 6 DAIMYO at the weights and on ratings will find it tough to win, he likes to race up on speed, he is still improving, and he is very gutsy, it would come as no surprise to see him in the places.
(Brandon Bailey: 1 – 9 – 7 – 6)
Race 6
12 BE MERRY has been super impressive to date, her last three wins have been nothing short of breathtaking, there is no doubt that she will need to improve even further to beat this field, she is speedy and very much progressive, watch her closely with no weight on her back. 7 NORDIC QUEST quickened up smartly to win well in her last start, her form is faultless, she will have a good winning chance again. 6 SOUTHERN SKIES never runs a bad race, her last three wins have been very good, the blinkers stay on, and she gets the services of champion Jockey Richard Fourie again, she will be right there at the finish. 8 SUMMER LILY drops in trip, and she gets the blinkers fitted, watch her late, she could sneak into the Quartets at a decent price.
(Brandon Bailey: 12 – 7 – 6 – 8)
Race 7
12 GIMMIE’S COUNTESS won the Grade 3 Diana Stakes impressively, she is a filly that likes to be held up and then comes with a storming finish late, she is very classy and should take a power of beating with some luck in running. 3 SYMPHONY IN WHITE needed her last run badly over 1250m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville when running on beautifully for third, she now steps up in trip to 1400m which should help her chances, include her into all bets. 7 MAI SENSATION ran a super race behind Beware The Bomb last time, she unfortunately found some traffic problems up the lane on that occasion, she is improving nicely and could sneak into the places in this very competitive field. 4 BEWARE THE BOMB could be anything, her last two wins have been excellent, she is improving with every start and must be included into the play once again.
(Brandon Bailey: 12 – 3 – 7 – 4)
Race 8
6 SCARLET MACAW ran a great race against decent fillies in her last start, if she can produce a similar performance in this Class 4 event, she will go very close to winning. 1 SWIATEK won on debut at a huge price, she finished powerfully from a long way back and she was very green, with natural improvement, good draw, and stepping up in trip, she could go very close again. 8 PINK PIGEON went down to the start beautifully when she won her maiden last time, she is a nice big filly that will keep getting better and stronger with more racing, include her into all bets. 3 SPOIL YOURSELF is much better than her last run, she was drawn poorly on that occasion and never really got into the race, from a good draw here, she could easily bounce back to best.
(Brandon Bailey: 6 – 1 – 8 – 3)
Race 9
20 TRIPPI’S SILK is much better than his last start over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, he now drops back in trip, if he jumps on terms, he could be right there in the finish at a decent price. 17 LUNCH MONEY has run some fair races over 1400m from wide draws, now that he races back up the straight at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth over 1200m, he could find his best form and be competitive. 10 PARATROOPER has had no luck in running in his last few races, if the race works out for him in this big field, he could sneak into the places late. 11 KELP FOREST is not a straightforward ride, he needs things to work out for him, if the gaps open up at the right time, he could have a good place chance on his best form.
(Brandon Bailey: 20 – 17 – 10 – 11)
Race 10
12 CHAMPAGNE MAC ran a lovely race last time from a wide draw at Hollywoodbets Durbanville when finishing second, the blinkers go on, he is currently racing off a very competitive rating which will give him a huge winning chance. 2 AUGUSTA BLUE ran a much better race over 1400m in his most recent start, he drops back in trip, and he gets the blinkers fitted, at this level he will always have a good each way chance. 11 PRINCE OF TIBET improved in a big way to win well, he enjoys the sprint trips with the blinkers fitted, watch him closely. 5 ISCHYRO was heavily backed in the market in his last start behind Prince Of Tibet, he is not a big individual and he needs a particular ride, at his best he could have a Quartet chance.
(Brandon Bailey: 12 – 2 – 11 – 5)

Cape Eagle Can Take Up The Mantle

R1 Summary: Darryl More saddles HAPPY FORTUNE (5) who was a beaten favourite at her second outing after making a fair debut. This trip should suit and she can make amends. GREENLIGHT QUEEN (2) showed up well on debut starting at long odds. The experience and the step up in trip from a favourable draw could see the required improvement from Tony Rivalland’s filly. FATE DECREED (1) made marked improvement on the poly last run starting at long odds. She has the best of the draw and can hopefully build on that last effort. WOZA NAWE (13) has the widest draw but showed up well first run back after a lengthy break. She looks progressive and if overcoming the draw has a strong money chance. (Andrew Harrison: 5-3-1-13).
R2 Summary: LADY OF VIX (1) made a smart debut over the distance and with the best of the draw and the experience and according to Tony Rivalland she has strong claims even though taking on males. DORSET (3) caught the eye when running on late behind Barry Du Grond. It was big improvement on his modest local debut and should make further improvement for Michael Roberts. SUN IN MY POCKET (5) has been in the money in all three starts and was possibly in need of her last run as she ran out of steam late. She makes her turf debut. MIND MAP (7) was due to run last Wednesday on the poly. She made a promising local debut with first time cheek pieces and if taking her place, she should be a big runner. (Andrew Harrison: 1-3-5-7).
R3 Summary: HOT LAVA (5) was a recent maiden winner but came from the clouds to get up in the last stride to beat the consistent BLOWIN IN THE WIND (3) who franked that form, winning next time out. Alyson Wright’s filly enjoys a 1.5kg swing in the weights but given the manner of Hot Lava’s win and an extra 100m she could confirm the placings. ASPOESTERTJIE (4) is never far off the winner and Carl Hewitson’s mare should be competitive again. SPIRITED FLIGHT (6) was a game winner on the poly last time out. She got a four-point rise in the handicap which could see her struggle for back-to-back wins. (Andrew Harrison: 5-3-4-6).
R4 Summary: MOCHA BLEND (7) made a smart debut for Frank Robinson, running on strongly from well off the pace. The switch to turf and this extended trip should bring out further improvement and she rates the one to beat. QUEEN OF THE AIR (8) raced green on debut and Frikkie Greyling’s well-bred filly is another that should enjoy this trip. FLYING HAFLA (4) was game in defeat last time out but that was a rather weak maiden and the likes of Mocha Blend could prove too strong. CALL ME HARRIET (3) improved when stepped up in trip on the poly. She could be coming to hand. (Andrew Harrison: 7-8-4-3).
R5 Summary: MR HOTSTEPPER (1) shed his maiden at second time of asking beating the luckless Mc Dazzler. However, he was three lengths off subsequent Gr2 winner Cats Pajamas on debut and given his pedigree, Glen Kotzen’s gelding can step up again. FRENCH TRIP (5) has been in good form for Ducan Howells since joining the yard from the Cape. He was a beaten favourite last run but may have found the 2300m trip out of his compass. This is a more suitable trip. HIGH QUEUE (4) has consistent Highveld form and looks another strong contender. Clinton Binda’s gelding has not been out of the money in his last five starts and should be in the mix. Mike de Kock saddles the filly GRAPE SHOT (7) who was not far back in her local debut on the poly. She jumps in trip and is one to watch in the market. (Andrew Harrison: 1-5-4-7).
R6 Summary: Andre Nel will have his first crack at the Gr1 Betway Summer Cup if all goes well with CAPE EAGLE (7). The seven-year-old ran a smart race behind the useful Madison Valley last time out and looks well weighted in his warm-up for the big Highveld event. NATYAM (1) finished a length back to Cape Eagle when last they met in the Michaelmas Handicap but given this set weights race he is now 2,5kg worse off with Cape Eagle. POSITIVE ATTITUDE (5) has had two outings for Dennis Bosch, winning last time out beating Royal Swan Master on the poly. His best Highveld form was over much further but he looks competitive again. QUEUE WING (8) is seldom too far back and although he looks held at these weights he can still make an impression. (Andrew Harrison: 7-1-5-8).
R7 Summary: Competitive handicap. PINK DIAMOND (4) found sudden market support before drifting out when trying the poly last time out. She was due to run on the turf last Wednesday before the race was switched to the poly and she was scratched in order to take her chances here. GREENLIGHTALLTHEWAY (7) was a neck back to Pink Diamond when last they met but is now 2kg worse off in the handicap however the form of her maiden win has been franked. FORWARD MOTION (8) got a two-point drop in the handicap for her last run and Paul Lafferty has booked 2.5kg claimer Bervan Plaatjies to help her chances. SASCHA’S DREAM (6) came good at second time of asking when stepped up in trip. She faces more exposed runners here but can follow up. (Andrew Harrison: 4-7-8-6).
R8 Summary: The last is another competitive handicap but INTREPID (5) has been making steady improvement again and was beaten less than a length over course and distance last time out. Gavin Lerena takes over in the saddle and Alyson Wright’s gelding looks primed for this race. TRAFALGAR SQUARE (8) is another that has been improving again and goes well this course and distance. IMMAH (1) is lightly raced and looks progressive. He is down in class and with Rachel Venniker’s allowance but must have a good money chance. NDAKA (7) has patchy form but has been racing on the poly of late. He is quick and can go all the way. (Andrew Harrison: 5-8-1-7).
Greef Four-timer, Fourie Treble, Van Rensburg Double
The Alan Greeff-trained Splicethemainbrace (Master Of My Fate) won the TAB TELEBET 0861 000 822 Fillies Guineas Plate to make it six career wins in seven starts and she was the middle leg of a treble for Richard Fourie and the third leg of a four-timer for Alan Greeff. (Pauline Herman Photography)
Alan Greeff had a four-timer on the Fairview poly on Friday, three of them ridden by Richard Fourie.
The month’s most in form rider, Marco van Rensburg, clinched another double to make it ten wins this month.
Fourie is on 54 wins for the season at a strike rate of 23.58%.
Van Rensburg is on 31 wins for the season at 11.48%.
Greeff is on 41 wins at 14.49% and he is eight wins clear of arch rival Gavin Smith.
Luyolo Mxothwa had a nasty fall in the fifth race and was reportedly later diagnosed to have a cracked collarbone and scapula and would not require surgery.

Today's Question
The USA’s biggest races take place on dirt
Why are dirt surfaces more common in the USA than turf surfaces and why do the former host more races?
FIELDS, Saturday 09 November
Hollywoodbets Kenilworth
Turffontein Standside
FIELDS, Sunday 10 November
Hollywoodbets Greyville
Today’s Question Answer
The main reasons are dirt surfaces are easier to maintain, and how breeding has adapted. Turf is a living, breathing surface that gets torn up with divots when horse hooves gallop over it. It must be intricately watered, reseeded, and rested for periods of time to keep it thriving. While dirt surfaces also require meticulous care, they don’t need any regeneration time. Many US racetracks host racing over multiple consecutive days, for weeks at a time. This continuous use is better suited to a dirt track, with a small number of races carded on a turf course. In England and Ireland, where nearly all racing is on turf, each racecourse hosts a far more limited number of races over their grass tracks thanks to a “fixture list” that rotates race dates from track to track. This gives the grass time to regenerate between fixtures.
