Champion owners Hollywood Racing had a possible new string added to their bow of potential stakes winners when Ovation Star won the first race in impressive style on the Hollywoodbets Greyville poly today (Tuesday).

In the meantime they are looking forward to feature race campaigns for some of their best horses, who include Cognac, I Am Giant, Asiye Phambili, Busstopinhounslow, Buddy Boy, Miami Mountain, Mamlambo and others.

In overseas news they are still not sure who will be riding One Stripe in the Breeders Cup Mile after Gavin Lerena was forced to pull out as he won’t be race-riding fit, while Isivunguvungu is being rested as he needed to be freshened up after a tough campaign which included traveling to Dubai.

The Stuart Ferrie-trained pair Cognac and I am Giant will soon be on their way to Cape Town.

Both of them run on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville in separate 1200m events and so does another promising Hollywood Racing three-year-old, the Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Buddy Boy, who could also be eyeing Cape Town.

Cognac, who won impressively on debut over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, is by Rafeef out of a Silvano mare who won twice over 1400m and 2200m respectively, so it would seem at first glance that he would stay the mile trip of the Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, which could be a possible target.

However, Hollywood Racing’s racing manager Anthony Delpech said, “Blood tests show him to be a sprinter.”

Hollywood do the “Speed Gene” blood test on all of their horses.

This test identifies a genetic variation in the horse’s myostatin gene (MSTN), which regulates muscle development, to determine its optimal racing distance and precocity potential. A C:C genetic type is suited for sprints and early performance, a C:T type for versatile middle-distance racing, and a T:T type for stamina and late-maturing horses.

Anthony continued, “Cognac’s test came out as C:C, which means he is a sprinter. That doesn’t mean he can’t get a mile, we’ve had C:C’s who have won over 2000m before, so it just gives you a bit of a line to what the horse’s distance is. Cognac’s mother’s stamina side is strong, so I think the most important thing is that Sean (Veale) says he switches off and in that case he should be able to get the trip. We’ll try further and if he doesn’t get it then we’ll stick to sprints for now until he’s matured and might go a little further. But we think he’s going to get a mile. Stuart is pretty convinced he’ll get a mile.”

Buddy Boy, who is by What A Winter out of a Trippi mare, won’t have to face a stamina-proving test because he won full of running second time out over 1600m by six lengths at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. He runs over 1600m on Sunday in a class 4 event off a 90 merit rating and a route will then likely be planned for him depending on how well he does.

I Am Giant, who won the Gr 2 Post Merchants over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Hollywoodbets Durban July day, was a touch disappointing in the Gr 2 Mercury Sprint. Having found a handy position from draw four he did not find as much as expected in the straight and could only manage a 3,90 length eighth.

However, he is likely better than that. He was possibly too handy, as he came from off the pace in the Merchants and was only produced late in that race. He might also enjoy going down the straight again. The obvious races for him in Cape Town are the Gr 2 Cape Merchants over 1200m on December 13, the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship over 1000m on WSB Met day and the Gr 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes over 1200m on Cape Derby day.

Asiye Phambili, who is already in Cape Town with Lucinda Woodruff, can defend her titles in the Gr 3 WSB Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m on December 6 and the Gr 2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes over 1200m on L’Ormarins King’s Plate day and can then have another go at the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship. This is likely her last season of racing before going to stud.

The Grant Maroun-trained Busstopinhounslow will be running in the Gr 2 Allied Steelrode-Onamission Mile over 1600m at Turffontein Standside on November 1. He ran a cracker on Saturday in the Gr 2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge over 1450m when staying on from the rear and being pipped for second by Betway Summer Cup winner Atticus Finch. He ran off a 109 merit rating and was carrying 56kg, which made him 2kg under sufferance with Atticus Finch. He was beaten by the three-year-old winner Tin Pan Alley, to whom he gave 6kg, by 0,80 lengths.

Anthony said, “In that company I thought it was a top, top run.”

He also believes the New Predator gelding will prefer the Standside track for the Charity Mile and mentioned him as having “a helluva turn of foot.”

Delpech was also impressed with Miami Mountain on Saturday. The Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Canford Cliffs colt is out of the Gr 1 Allan Robertson winner Miss Florida (Captain Al) and he beat some good horses in a Graduation Plate over 1200m, including the Gr 2 Umkhomazi Stakes winner Zalatoris, from whom he received just 1,5kg and he beat him by 1,50 lengths, although he did have pole position draw compared to Zalatoris’s draw ten.

Anthony said, “That was a group level race and for the weight he carried to be able to beat them that was a very good win, so we have hopes for him too. He will be going for the Graham Beck (Gr 3 over 1400m on Charity Mile day), that will be his prep run and we will then take it from there.”

Hollywood Racing are also excited about the Heather Adamson-trained Canford Cliffs three-year-old filly Mamlambo, who was second on debut over 1160m and then won her next two over 1400m in comfortable style.

Anthony said, ” I think she’s very, very good. I think after a long break coming back and winning in that fashion, she looks above average, and with a bit of luck she could be a Cape Fillies Guineas horse. She will go for the Gr 3 Starling Stakes over 1400m on Charity Mile day and if she wins that we may go for the Cape Fillies Guineas and then come back for the Triple Tiara races.”

Meanwhile, it is not known yet who will be riding One Stripe in the Breeders Cup Mile at Del Mar on November 1. Gavin Lerena made the professional decision to pull out as he was not going to be fit enough after a long suspension. The team would like to keep Hall Of Famer John Velazquez, who rode him on his USA debut, but he is a top rider so will likely have a pick of rides.

Anthony was very pleased with One Stripe’s run in the Gr 1 Woodbine Mile and said, “Things went all wrong and from where he came from on a tight track like that, I think he ran a very good race, especially after being off for six months. I think he would have finished second had things gone according to plan.”

Meanwhile, the Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained Rafeef filly Ovation Star, who is out of twice-winning Var mare Targaryan, drifted out from 8/10 to 33/10 in an Open Maiden over 1200m on the poly today (Tuesday) and this was likely due to her having to carry topweight, despite being a young three-year-old who had never run before. However, she spreadeagled the field after coming from midfield to win by six lengths under Callan Murray. Mike de Kock pointed out it was a weak field and he hoped the handicapper wouldn’t be too harsh on her considering whom she beat. However, the manner of her win suggests she has a bright future. She is tall and immature, but has nice length of rein, and has plenty of scope for improvement.

Other Hollywood Racing horses to look out for are the Vaughan Marshall-trained speedster Inside Voice (Pathfork) together with the Gareth van Zyl-trained pair Luhamba Phambili and Lion Rampart. All three look to be useful sprinters.

Imilenzeyokududuma is a useful 1400m to miler type and he runs in the same race as I Am Giant at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

Eight On Eighteen is back in training after a deserved holiday.

Jonathan Snaith said, “Eight on Eighteen returns from his well-deserved rest looking better than ever. He has strengthened, matured, and appears to have taken another step forward.

This season, his campaign will be built around the Gr1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate and the Gr1 Cape Met – both races are rich in history and renowned as stallion-makers.

His connections will give him a single prep run ahead of the King’s Plate, with the exact race still to be confirmed.”

The Equus Horse Of The Year won three Gr 1 races as a three-year-old, the WSB Met, the Splashout Cape Derby and the Daily News 2000, all over 2000m.

He failed by 0,25 lengths to become the eighth horse to win both the Met and the Hollywoodbets Durban July and he would have been the first to have completed that double as a three-year-old.

He will be out to exact revenge on his July conqueror The Real Prince in the prestigious weight for age races, the L’Ormarins King’s Plate and the WSB Met, although over his right distance of 2000m in the Met it shouldn’t be a contest on paper because he had to give the year older The Real Prince half-a-kilogram in the July, meaning he faced him on 2,5kg worse than weight for age.

Race fans will be looking forward to his campaign as he has the potential to become an all time superstar.

The racing world is bracing for one of the most anticipated events on the 2026 calendar – The RCS Big Cap, scheduled for 12 April 2026 at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Boasting a massive R5 million purse, this high-stakes contest will be run over 1400m under set conditions, and is expected to draw blue-chip contenders.

The RCS Big Cap is a slot race, offering a thrilling opportunity for owners and syndicates to participate by purchasing one of 14 exclusive slots, each priced at R350,000 (excl. VAT). The 2025 HSH Princess Charlene Big Cap winner, All Out For Six, is also set for an international campaign in Hong Kong.

Handicapping Rating Updates

BETWAY JOBURG SPRING CHALLENGE (Grade 2)

The three-year-old, TIN PAN ALLEY, has had his official merit rating increased from 113 to 116 following his victory in the Grade 2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge over 1450m at the Turffontein Inside track on Saturday. The Handicappers viewed fourth-place finisher CHOISAANADA, as the line horse for assessing the race, leaving his rating unchanged at 112.

BUSSTOPINHOUNSLOW, who finished third in the race, was the other runner to receive an increase—from 109 to 112. This adjustment ensures he will meet CHOISAANADA on correct handicap terms in future contests.

The following horses received a one-point drop in their merit ratings:

Texas Red: from 120 to 119
Lucky Lad: from 124 to 123
Musical Score: from 112 to 111

BETWAY JOBURG SPRING F & M CHALLENGE (Grade 2)

CALLMEGETRIX’s official merit rating has been increased from 108 to 110 following her victory in the Grade 2 Betway Joburg Spring Fillies & Mares Challenge, run over 1450m. The Handicappers identified the consistent third-place finisher, DESTINY OF FIRE, as the most suitable line horse for assessing the race, leaving her rating unchanged at 96.

The runner up, RODEO DRIVE, could only be adjusted to 107 from 103, due to the conditions of this race that precludes an increase of more than four points for placed runners.

There were, however, merit rating reductions for three runners:

Minogue: dropped from 107 to 105
Frozen Fantasy: reduced from 102 to 100
Poblano: dropped from 99 to 94

By the sire of Gr 1 winning fillies Golden Palm, Sentbydestiny and Zarina, this filly, a half-sister to four winners, is bred on the same Master Of My Fate/Var cross as champions Golden Palm and Tempting Fate. A very neat filly that hails from a good female line. Has a incredible temperament and generous eye.

Lot 55: Speed Storm – Rafeef -Princess Blitz (colt):

A three-parts brother to Gr 1 Computaform Sprint winning sire Master Archie, this colt is bred to be fast, with his dam a winning daughter of What A Winter and granddam a stakes winning daughter of Var. His dam is a half-sister to Master Archie. He looks to be a speedy sort as his name implies.

Lot83: Unnamed – One World -Someone Exciting (colt):

By one of South Africa’s most promising stallions, this colt is out of a four-time winning daughter of Goldfields Sprint Listed winner Lady Perez. He is an athletic son of One World that shows a good turn of foot. This scopey colt has a good rein and shows great action.

Lot 90: One Turn – One World -The Turning Point (colt):

From a top-class family, this colt’s dam is a three-parts sister to multiple graded stakes winner Future Swing. Very smart son of One World, who looks to be the sort to take on the classics. A very attractive colt.

Lot 126: Just Because – Erik The Red -Just Fabulous (colt):

By last season’s Leading First Season Sire, Just Because is closely related to Golden Palm, with the latter sired by Erik The Red’s close relative Master Of My Fate. His dam is a half-sister to the dam of Alan Greeff’s top filly Golden Palm. A well-made, scopey colt who oozes quality.

Lot 144: Unneded – Gimmethegreenlight – Fairyinthewoods (filly):

A daughter of a multiple champion sire, this filly is closely related to the likes of Tail Of The Comet and Chasing Green. Her dam won six times, from seven starts, including the Gr 2 Southern Cross Stakes.

She’s a full sister to Lighthearted, a three-time winner. Dynamite comes in small packages, and this filly works really well!

Hollywoodbets Durbanville Wednesday Formguides And Selections

R1 11 PRINCE OF EGYPT ran a great race behind Typically French on the 9th of September at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, he ran third and was beaten just over half a length at the line, unfortunately the wide draw in this race will make it tough for him, but he is improving with every start, if he gets some luck in running, he will be competitive. 13 JOUEUR DE FLUTE is as honest as they come, he is so consistent, he ran a cracker last time behind Gallic Forge in a driving finish on the 9th of September, if he can beat the wide draw here, he will be right there in the finish. 7 MARCUS AURELIUS has been rested for 90 days, he was terribly disappointing in heavy conditions on the 10th of July, he is much better than that performance, if he doesn’t need the run badly on Wednesday, he should be amongst the places, include him into all bets. 10 GALLIC KING is well bred, watch this individual closely. R2 3 VIXENINTHEVINEYARD ran a much better race on the 9th of September at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, she jumped out the gates well, and she stayed on nicely for third, if she can bring that performance to the track on Wednesday, with no weight on her back, she will go close to winning. 13 VIXENS WAR ran a lovely race behind Reet Petite on the 9th of September, she finished third and was only beaten just over one length at the line, it will be tough for her from a wide draw in this race, but she is clearly improving, with some luck in running, she will go close. 1 NANNIE GOLD has run two fair races in succession, she was doing some good work late behind Cape Captain on the 9th of September, from a neat draw, she must have a good each way chance in this field. 9 WHATASTAR had no luck in running on the 3rd of September, she was drawn badly and raced wide throughout, she still managed to finish just over five lengths behind the winner, even though she has a tricky draw again on Wednesday, she can definitely finish in the places with some luck in running. R3 8 ALL THE RAGE has been rested for 71 days, he won a super race last time, he sat just off the speed early, and then quickened away from the field in terrific fashion, he is very smart, even though he has a tricky draw to beat here, he will go close to winning. 5 GOOD FOR YOU has been rested for 130 days, he won the Grade 1 Gold Medallion very well at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on the 31st of May, there is no doubt that he is packed with ability, if he doesn’t need the run badly on Wednesday, he will make All The Rage work hard for victory. 1 MISS WORLD may find it difficult to win this race, but she is drawn well, and she has no weight on her back, she might be able to get into the places at a decent price. 4 POWERANDTHEGLORY has been rested for 200 days, he is a lovely looking gelding, this trip will be on the short side for him, but he will be doing some good work late, watch him closely going forward from this run. R4 12 BEWARE finished like a train on debut behind Astronomical Boy on the 13th of September at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, he was green early, and really took off late to run just over one length behind the winner, even though he is drawn badly here, he will love the step up in trip, with some luck in running, he will be hard to beat. 3 IN MOTION has run two very nice races in succession, he stayed on well for second in the same race where Beware ran fifth, he is gutsy, he has a good draw, and he should enjoy the step up in trip to 1500m, include him into all bets, he will be right there in the finish. 5 KLEIN KAROO may find it difficult to win, he ran a fair race last time behind Gallic Forge on the 9th of September, he ran fourth and was only beaten just over two lengths at the line, he can certainly run into the places on his best form. 9 WATERFRONT will love the step up in trip to 1500m, he was terribly green on debut when finishing four lengths behind the winner, he can only improve. R5 9 REET PETITE ran on strongly to win a great race on debut, she was a long way back turning for home, and she powered past the field to win a good race, even though she is drawn wide here, she will love the step up in trip to 1500m, she looks like a smart filly in the making, and she will go very close to winning again. 8 BEACH VERSE quickened up well to win her maiden impressively on the 27th of August, she is well related, and she is still improving, watch her closely late, she will be storming home at a decent price. 3 MIGHTY MARY had to dig deep to win her maiden on the 7th of September, she is a young filly that will keep improving with every run, from a neat draw on Wednesday, her chances must be respected. 4 GOLDEN ANGEL unfortunately had a terrible fall in running last time, she has dropped significantly in the ratings, if she bounces back to her best form, she can certainly trouble them all at a big price. R6 7 SESAME finished her race off nicely to win well on the 13th of September at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, Jockey Chad Little knows this filly well, she will be just off the speed early, and she will be running on strongly late, if she has made any further improvement back at home, she will be competitive. 6 MIDWAY is much better than his recent performance behind Black Path on the 27th of August, he got very worked up behind the gates, he jumped out the machine well, and then became one paced up the lane, if he relaxes early, and he bounces back to his best form, he can definitely win a race like this. 9 PRINCE OF TIBET must have a good each way chance, he ran a good race last time behind Worldly on the 13th of September, he ran second and was only beaten just under two lengths, he should enjoy the step up in trip to 1600m, watch him closely, top jockey Richard Fourie sticks with him. 2 MELA STRENGTH never runs a bad race, if he goes down to the start well, he could sneak into the Quartet. R7 4 VIVA’S LIBERTE found lots of betting support on debut, he quickened up beautifully to win a good race on the 27th of August, there is absolutely no doubt that he will love the step up in trip to 1400m, he looks very exciting, from a neat draw, he will have a big winning chance again. 3 BLIND DATE stayed on strongly behind IT IS MY TIME last time, he was drawn poorly, and he still managed to finish just under two lengths behind the winner on that occasion, he is improving, he gets a good draw on Wednesday, and he gets the services of jockey Richard Fourie, he will go close here. 5 CARRIACOU always has a winning chance at this level, he ran a great race behind Happy Verse on the 30th of August, he finished second and he tried so hard all the way to the line, with the right run in transit, he can certainly win a race like this. 8 YAMAZAKI won his maiden impressively on the 30th of August, he is still improving, and he has a wonderful turn of foot, include him into all bets. R8 5 ELECTROMAGNETISM has been rested for 109 days, she ran a lovely race in the Listed Irridescence Stakes on the 21st of June at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, she made up many lengths in the straight, and got beaten on the line to finish second behind Ukuduma, she is a nice filly with lots of potential, if she doesn’t need the run badly on Wednesday, she will go close to winning. 3 UKUDUMA has been rested for 109 days, she beat Electromagnetism in a driving finish last time, she is a lovely filly with lots of ability, include her into all bets, she definitely has a winning chance. 11 GIRL LIKE US unfortunately has a bad draw to deal with in this competitive race, but she ran on strongly to win well on the 30th of August, she beat a decent field, if she gets some luck in running, she could sneak into the places at a big price. 6 DECEMBER DAWN could be the value in this race, she would have needed her run back from a break last time, she ran third behind She’s My World, the form of that race has worked out well, include her into the play. R9 3 CHAPBOOK has been rested for 101 days, he won his maiden in super fashion at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on the 29th of June, he is a young horse with lots of ability, it will be his first run in the Western Cape at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, if he handles the track, from a neat draw, he can win again. 6 SHIFTING PATH had no luck in the straight last time, it got very tight for him on a few occasions up the straight where he still managed to run just under two lengths behind the winner, he has dropped even further in the ratings, with some luck on his side, he could trouble them in the finish at a decent price. 4 GALLIC FORGE won a good race at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on the 9th of September, he now drops in trip for this Class 5 Event, if he has made further improvement, he can finish in the places. 8 COMMANDING has been in good form of late, he ran fifth behind African Prince on the 30th of August, unfortunately the tricky draw here will make it tough for him, but on his best form, he can sneak into the Quartet. Luke Ferraris won the fist three races at the meeting at Sha Tin on Saturday.

He won aboard the Pierre Ng-trained Yoda’s Choice in a class 5 handicap over 1650m on the all weather , on the David Hayes-trained Decrelot in a class 5 handicap over 1400m and on the David Hayes-trained Precision Goal in a class 4 over 1650m.

Who arrived in South Africa from England as a riding teacher and show rider in September 1969, but later decided it was too difficult a way to make a living so she went to the 1970 yearling sales and bought two fillies and then applied for her  trainer’s license. She trained her first winner in the 1970/1971 season and was the Transvaal Champion Trainer only nine years later.
