Laird Wins SA's Richest Ever Gr 1 With Sales Reject

The Gr 1 R6 million Betway Summer Cup was the richest Gr 1 event in South African history and the winner of this 2000m race at Turffontein Standside on Saturday, Mater Of My Fate five-year-old gelding Atticus Finch, did not reach his reserve at the BSA National Yearling Sale and was sold in a private deal afterwards to Alec Laird.

Alec recalled, “Varsfontein didn’t get their price so after the sale they asked me if I didn’t want to put it together, because they didn’t want to take him back to the farm to try and sell him at another sale.”

Atticus Finch hadn’t been on Alec’s shortlist and he had not bid for him, but he had trained members of the family before and often buys from Varsfontein Stud , which were a couple of reasons why farm manager Carl De Vos had approached him. Alec agreed to take him for their asking price of R150,000.

The first share in him that Alec sold was easy.

He related, “When Atticus arrived from the sale Lance Clark was at the yard visiting another horse of his who had ended up a very disappointing horse. He was in the box looking at this horse and Atticus arrived and walked into the stable next door and Lance said, ‘What’s that?’ and I replied, “No, he’s a horse who is for sale,’ and he said straight away, ‘I’ll take a share!’ Lance had just come into my yard at the time with a couple of horses and he must have liked something he saw about Atticus. We ended up putting the horse together quickly!”

Funnily enough Atticus’s pedigree was boosted sometime after the sale by a horse who ended up favourite on Saturday for the Summer Cup, Main Defender. The latter, now a four-year-old, was a crack two-year-old and three-year-old and won the Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes among other stakes events.Main Defender was also bred at Varsfontein Stud and is out of a half-sister to Atticus Finch.

It was a second Summer Cup win for Alec, meaning he has outdone his legendary father Syd in Johannesburg’s most iconic race. Syd raided Johannesburg with some greats like Mazarin and Politician in an effort to win this big race, but his sole win was with The Rutland Arms (Royal Prerogative) in April 1985.

Alec’s first Summer Cup win was with Malteme in November 2006. Malteme was by Rakeen and Atticus Finch is by Rakeen’s grandson Master Of My Fate, who is by Rakeen’s famous seven-times champion sire son Jet Master.

Alec said, “I am so proud of Atticus and so proud of my team and I am really chuffed for a really lovely bunch of owners … they have supported me really well and to be able to pay them back is such a lekker result. It was a great day, it was a wonderful day.”

Gary Basel, Lance Clark and Grant Cornwall were on course and the latter had actually flown up from Durban together with his family. So the only owner not on course was Phil Gregory and that was because he was overseas.

The day had already been made before the Summer Cup when the yard’s three-year-old Fire Away colt Fire Attack finished second in the Gr 2 R650,000 Betway Dingaans, which added to his win of the Gr 2 SA Nursery earlier this year.

Atticus’s Finch’s owners Basel, Clark and Cornwall also own shares in Fire Attack, while Basel and Clark own shares in the yard’s Ideal World colt Parisian Walkway, who ran fourth in the Dingaans.

Alec said about the Summer Cup, “The funny thing is Atticus was favourite last year and this year it was possibly a stronger field. We weren’t well in at the weights but he was well in himself, that was the difference. He ran above his rating.”

Alec added, “The nice thing is it’s come full circle, because Calvin Habib was offered the ride on the winner (Royal Victory) last year (after riding him to victory in the Michaelmas), but he stuck with Atticus. So he has been rewarded a year later … he said after the race he had made amends for last year!”

Alec was asked if Atticus Finch was better in himself than he had been last year and replied, “Oh gosh yes. Last year he had to qualify and still get there in good shape, so after winning the Victory Moon he still had the Summer Cup, so it was a longer road. This year he had a fantastic prep. There were no hiccups in his prep. Each run just brought him on and he peaked at the right time. Also with a bigger spread in the handicap and him being under sufferance he could afford to have a full go in all the races he was prepping in, there was none of that half hoping he wouldn’t win in order to avoid a penalty.”

In other words, Alec was happy his horse had had some hard races in the build up that would have brought him to his absolute peak.

Chief handicapper Lennon Maharaj spoke of his observation shortly before the off that the times for all the races up until then had been slower than average and he thus believed the going was more testing on the day … he wondered whether the grass was perhaps thicker or whether it had been the effect of watering.

Alec said he would have endorsed that observation as it seemed nothing was winning from the front.

He said, “Calvin wanted to be handy, but he got knocked out of the race and going through the turn I said, ‘Well at least they are not winning from the front’. Mind you the horse that ran second (Purple Pitcher) ran a brilliant race from the front.”

He continued, “I made Purple Pitcher a massisve danger to us beforehand. On the turn around in the weights from the Victory Moon I told the owners we can’t beat Purple Pitcher, it is going to be tough. I even told Robyn Klaasen that I had told my owners we’re going to battle to beat your horse and I said the only way your horse will get beat is if I put money on it!”

Alec actually lamented not double floating Atticus Finch and Purple Pitcher in a quartet because it paid a massive R 224,437.50.

Going back to the running, Alec said Atticus Finch had ended up in the right place and he added, “Calvin made the comment before that to win the Summer Cup you need a horse that’s a grinder, not necessarily a finisher but a grinder. And that is what Atticus is.”

Calvin also won the Summer Cup in 2021 on the 25/1 outsider Flying Carpet.

Atticus Finch started at 20/1 odds and beat 14/1 shot Purple Pitcher with 33/1 shot Rule By Force third, the 100/1 chance Madison Valley fourth and the long-time ante-post favourite See It Again, who started at odds of 4/1, being run out of it late and finishing fifth.

Alec is waiting to see what the handicapper does with Atticus Finch before deciding his next step.

The line horse will likely be the 123-rated Purple Pitcher and as five-year-old Atticus received 1,5kg from this four-year-old and beat him by 1,10 lengths it looks likely he will go to 121.

Alec said, “He has always been more of a handicapping horse and he’s now going to move up to another level, so it’s going to be tough, but we’ll see. He has always been on the lighter side, so as a five-year-old he might just improve some more.”

He said Fire Attack would be programmed towards the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas next year. He was an entry for the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, but he said that race was too close to the Dingaans.

Alec said, “You can take a motorbike down to Cape Town for a race two weeks later, but it’s hard to take a horse after a race like that.”

Alec said the Gr 1 SA Classic would give them a chance of seeing whether Fire Attack stayed further than a mile.

He said Parisian Walkway (Ideal World) was an immature horse who would get stronger and said he looked to be a Derby type.

Quid Pro Quo Will Not Be Off To Cape Town

South Africa has a new horseracing sensation, the Barend Botes-trained Quid Pro Quo.

She became the first to win KZN’s unofficial two-year-old Triple Tiara last season and on Saturday she returned from a four month layoff and treated the boys with contempt in one of Johannesburg’s most iconic three-year-old races, the Gr 2 Betway Dingaans over 1600m, winning by 2,50 lengths without coming off the bit.

Barend said, “I wouldn’t say I was surprised, I expected her to do well, but obviously with Mr de Kock’s horse (Greaterix was backed in to odds on favourite) and with her not having had a run for four months, I had my stress and concerns, but we go all out and hope for the best!”

He said the win had really impressed him … he was not the only one to be impressed as pundits have already started comparing her to the greats.

Barend said, “I think she is just something special.”

The plan for her had always been the Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara series of races in Autumn (Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic and the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks) and the Dingaans had only become part of her program when it became clear it was a suitable race because she would not have to carry any Grade 1 penalties and she would also get the gender allowance from the boys.

She won the Dingaans so easily that the world looks to be her oyster.

Some were even wondering whether she would be sent down to Cape Town at short notice.

However, Cape Town is out of the question for the time being.

Quid Pro Quo’s owner and breeder Gerald Kalil explained, “She won’t go to Cape Town at this age. Many years ago I had a bad experience with some good horses going to Cape Town from Durban, so that is why I am a little bit nervous about it. Maybe next season when she is a four-year-old she will go. So at this stage we will go for the Triple Tiara and then look at the Durban season. It is up to Barend too, he’s the boss.”

He added, “I don’t think I have ever seen a horse like this in my life, she is one of a kind. The things she has done, she won that race with no shoes on last season, I have never heard of a horse having both shoes taken off and winning. Then on Saturday the odds were against her, she had never had a prep run and she was up against 12 decent horses, I wouldn’t mind owning any one of those other 12 horses.”

Gerald said about his own expectations going into Saturday’s race, “I wasn’t scared. When I look at races I look at times and her times were way better than those other horses. If you are an athlete you go on times and when I was at school I used to run the 100m in 11.1 seconds but if there was a guy who had run 10.9 he was going to beat me. Horses are athletes so times are important. I was confident. I bankered her in my Pick 6.”

It is exciting times for Gerald and Karen Kalil as the owners and breeders of a potential superstar.

At this time of the year the experienced pundits always warn of the silly season, when fans and pundits tend to go overboard about the class of the early three-year-olds.

However, it was hard to not be impressed by Quid Pro Quo such was the ease with which she sauntered to her sixth successive victory and she certainly looks to be something out of the ordinary.

Master Of My Fate Moves Into The Lead

Varsfontein Stud stand the reigning South African Champion Sire Gimmethegreenlight, who has won the title three times and smashed certain records in the process, and they also stand the current log leader Master Of My Fate.

Master Of My Fate is the sire of Atticus Finch, who collected a cheque of R 3,450,000 for winning South Africa’s richest ever Gr 1 event on Saturday at Turffontein Standside, the R6 million Betway Summer Cup.

Master Of My Fate’s earnings for the season saored to R8,988,875 which is narrowly ahead of Vercingetorix on 8,519,338, while Gimmethegreenlight’s progeny are yet to hit topgear and he is on R6,341,538.

It could all change during Cape Racing’s Summer Festival Of Racing, but the accolades belong to Master Of My Fate at present.

The son of the seven-times national champion sire Jet Master has always been a good sire and has been in the top five for the last four completed seasons.

He is also highest in the stakes-winning statistics this season together with Vercingetorix.

Both Master Of My Fate and Vercingetorix have had four stakes winners of four stakes races so far this season.

Master Of My Fate never won at a higher level than Gr 2, but he was unlucky in the Met and just when the world seemed to be at his feet he suffered a tendon injury and had to be retired.

One World Filly Lands The Gr 3 Fillies Mile

Drakenstein Stud’s outstanding young sire One World’s great run of form continued on Saturday.
His first crop daughter World Of Alice provided One World with yet another feature race win when she won the G3 Betway Fillies Mile (1600m) at Turffontein.

Trained by Sean Tarry, World Of Alice had finished second in the G3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes before her win in Saturday’s G3 feature.

Under Craig Zackey, World Of Alice, whose bridle came off before the race, did very well to land Saturday’s R350 000 feature.

Suffering a bump in the running, the classy World Of Alice re-rallied in the running and stormed home late to get up and win by a neck.

Bred by Varsfontein Stud, World Of Alice has won two of seven starts with Saturday’s win pushing her earnings to R456 875.

The filly, out of the Hussonet mare Alice Springs, was a R240 000 buy from the 2023 National Yearling Sale.

World Of Alice is the third stakes winner to emerge from One World’s first crop, with this crop also producing brilliant recent G2 Cape Punters Cup winner One Stripe as well as this season’s Listed World Sports Betting Sophomore Sprint winner Lion Rampart.

Remarkably, One World runners ran 1-2-4 in the 2024 Cape Punters Cup and also filled the first three placings in the Sophomore Sprint.

Heather's Boy Does Not Have It Easy In Guineas Warm Up

All eyes will be on the Mike de Kock-trained Heather’s Boy at today’s Tuesday meeting at Turffontein Standside as he runs in a Graduation Plate over 1600m just eleven days before the Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, for which he is still an entry.

De Kock also has Greaterix and Artist’s Model in the Cape Guineas, but the former endured a hard race in the Gr 2 Betway Dingaans on Saturday when finding himself in front and probably going too hard, while the latter was beaten by over ten lengths so will have a hard task if takingh his place.

Heather’s Boy has been impressive and obviously has a lot of scope for further improvement as he has been green. He was challenged last time by the smart Bacchus, who franked the form by winnig next time out in easy fashion. Heather’s Boy gave Bacchus 1kg and a half-a-length beating over the course and distance of today’s racing and would have benefitted from being in a battle as the penny still had to drop with him. Today he is drawn in pole position in a seven horse field and officially has a very tough task at the weights. Acccording to official merit ratings he is no fewer than 8,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted runner, who is his stablemate, the year older filly Champagne Cocktail. Heather’s Boy is in fact only fifth best in at the weights. However, such is his scope for improvement that he is still tipped to win. In fact one fact in his favour is Guy Gibson is second best in at the weights and is officially 8kg well in with Heather’s Boy, but the latter’s stabemate Greaterix slammed Guy Gibson by 8,75 lengths last time over this trip in a Graduation Plate that had a similar weight structure to this one. Guy Gibson might still be able to run a place here as he has some class and has run better in his last two starts than he has been running lately. However, the chief danger could be We Are The Logans. He is only 2,5kg well in with Heather’s Boy but has shown class in the past and is in good form at present. The three-year-old Truth has been disappointing for a while and has another tough draw, but if it pans out well he could earn as he is also showing signs of a form return. Heather’s Boy is taken to beat We Are The Logans with Truth and Guy Gibson next best and then Champagne Cocktail, who has become a disappointing sort.

In the first leg of the Pick 6 Roman’s Revenge has turned the corner since being associated with Chase Maujean and a five point raise might not prevent the hattrick. However, Only A Poet made a fine Highveld debut over this trip for a new yard and has to be included, although he has a tricky draw. Silvano’s Song has a form chance but also has a tricky draw. Romeo’s Magic is well drawn and a repeat of his last run could see him in the shake up. Storm Ahead should be included as he will enjoy the step back in trip after winning his maiden well over it and then failing over 2400m.

In the sixth race over 1400m Wolf Mountain ran a cracker last time when a narrow second in the Gr 3 Graham Beck Stakes over this course and distance and due to an operator’s condition he escaped with a four point raise. His capped merit rating makes him potentially well handicapped here and he has a fair draw. Grey Jet won his maiden well but the form has not worked out particularly well and he has a tough draw. Choisaanada was not disgraced last time in a Graduation Plate but on formlines has a tough task with Wolf Mountain. Busstopinhounslow is on the up and relished the step up to 1200m last time and should enjoy a further step up in trip. Daring Dash could earn if producing his best but he needs to bounce back.

In the seventh over 1400m Blue Horizon is full of ability but has not enjoyed much luck lately and has come down another point in the merit ratings. She has a fair draw and should enjoy the Standside track with it’s long straight. Queen Of Love had won two in row before failing in a Gr 3 feature last time but back in this class and sneaking into the handicap with the minimum weight she could have a say. Duenna is a hardknocking sort who is distance suited and well drawn but she did finish behind Blue Horizon last time. Alabama Anna sneaks into the handicap with the minimum weigtht and is well drawn and comes from an in form yard and she beat Blue Horizon when they last met so she is hard to ignore. Ceuta beat Alabama Anna when they met in July but is worse off at the weigthts and has not run since then.

In the eigthth over 1400m Tried And Trued has improved in the Robyn Klaasen yard and has notable resolve. She can make it a hattrick despite a tricky draw and is suggested as a banker. For the risk averse the biggest dangers look to be Rattle Bag and Coffeeberry, although for the latter this will be tougher than the tasks she faced in Zimbabwe.

In the last race Pennsylvania won in classy style second time out and can follow up despite being given a 90 merit rating. Secret Chord bounced back to form last time and was unlucky too so can do well from a nice high draw. What A Tiger should be in the shake up.

In the first leg of the Bipot Winter In Paris is drawn on the right side and could fight it out with Chilli Marmalade.

In the first leg of the PA Mount Darwin is reunited with Gavin Lerena who is one from one aboard him. He will enjoy this course and distance from draw two. He looks to be a PA banker but Vesuvio and Birthright look set to run good races too.

Fatal Flaw Could Give Brett And James A Good Start

Leading trainer Brett Crawford and his son James are now officially training partners and could get this partnership off to a flying start as their New Predator filly Fatal Flaw has been priced up as the favourite for Saturday’s Gr 1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

The R1,25-million event has attracted a field of thirteen and there is a notable spread of big guns among the owners.

The Crawford’s ASSM Racing Syndicate-owned Fatal Flaw arrives in Cape Town from Johannesburg on Tuesday Piere Strydom keeeps the ride having ridden her to a dominating 2,25 length victory in the Gr 3 HSH Princess Charlene Stakes over 1400m last time out. The form of that race has been franked as the runner up World Of Alice won the well contested Gr 3 Betway Fillies Mile at the Big T on Saturday.

The ASSM Racing Syndicate, owned by Arun Chadha and Warme Ripon, also bring the Alan Greef-trained East Cape filly Splicethemainbrace (Master Of My Fate), who has won six of her seven starts to date, but this will be tougher and it is the first time she will be going over 1600m.

Gaynor Rupert’s Drakenstein Stud are the defending champions having won last year’s renewal with Beach Bomb. They come with a three-pronged attack having declared with Beware The Bomb, Little Suzie and Symphony in White. All three are relatively unexposed. Beware The Bomb (Grant van Niekerk) and Little Suzie (Sean Veale) are trained by Justin Snaith while Symphony In White will be seeking to give the Candice Bass-Robinson/Aldo Domeyer combination successive victories in this prestigious Classic event.

Ridgemont Stud race the 1400m Western Cape Fillies Championship (Gr2) winner, Mon Petit Cherie, in partnership with Hollywood’s Devin Heffer and retained Champion, Richard Fourie, will again be in the saddle. The daughter of Rafeef is out of a Galileo mare and should have no problems in seeing out the extra 200m.

Khaya Stables have Gimmie’s Countess and this talented Dean Kannemeyer-trained Gimmethegreenlight filly, a full sister to dual Grade 1 winner Gimme A Prince, has again drawn wide and is likely to be held up for her customary late charge.

Hugh Bowman fancies International Jockeys’ Championship chances as Zac Purton rues his rides

One Australian star is confident after being assigned quality mounts, while another plays down his claims in prestigious contest

Hugh Bowman is upbeat about his chances of claiming a second Longines International Jockeys’ Championship (IJC) on Wednesday night, but Zac Purton doesn’t share the same confidence in his bid for a historic fourth title.

Bowman received a confidence boost at Monday’s crucial allocation of rides for the prestigious Happy Valley contest, with his four mounts including Tony Cruz’s last-start winners Gustosisimo and Lovero and the consistent Jumbo Fortune.

Gustosisimo is one of six last-start winners in the fourth and final leg of the IJC, a quality 1,200m sprint at Class Three level.

Lovero won on protest at the Valley last start but has drawn wide in barrier 11 in Wednesday night’s third leg, a Class Three over 1,650m, while Jumbo Fortune tackles the second leg off the back of four placings from five starts for new trainer David Eustace this season.

“I’ve got a couple of very good rides, but the fields are very good,” Bowman said.

“I thought Gustosisimo and Jumbo Fortune were good rides – they’re the pick of mine. Both are genuine winning chances and if not winning, all-important placings. We’ll see how we go.

“Lovero’s drawn a little wide coming off a narrow win on protest. He’s going to need a bit of luck, I would have thought.”

Two-start maiden Notthesillyone is the first ride in this year’s series for Bowman, who won the IJC in 2016.

After battling a winning drought of 46 rides in November, the top Australian rider bounced back with a timely treble at Sha Tin on Sunday.

“We had a couple of quiet meetings where my horses didn’t run well at all, but the last five or six meetings, despite not winning a race, I was around the money and then I’ve had a couple of good days leading into this week,” Bowman said.

“I’m feeling good. [My IJC win in 2016] was a fair while ago, but it’s a great competition to be part of. I’ve ridden in it many times and I’m honoured to be representing Hong Kong this year.”

In contrast to Bowman’s confidence, Purton felt his chances of becoming the first jockey to win four IJC titles were dealt a blow when he was assigned Sight Happy, Charming Steed, Aestheticism and Giant Leap.

“I would have preferred a bit more quality there,” said Purton, who shares the IJC record with Frankie Dettori and Douglas Whyte.

“I never seem to draw too well unfortunately. I think I’ve got my work cut out for me. Giant Leap has come out of a weak Class Four on a biased track where he jumped well in front and took advantage of that. Now he’s up in grade.

“Charming Steed has only ever won in Class Five and he’s in Class Four and hasn’t raced for however long. They’re not normally the horses you’d be zeroing in on in those races. But you can’t change it, you’ve just got to try and work with it.”

A last-start Valley winner back in June, Charming Steed returns from a cannon bone injury sustained in August.

His trainer, Caspar Fownes, and Purton will team up for just the second time since September 2021. They combined in last year’s final leg of the IJC with Kaholo Angel, who ran a close second.

Zac Lloyd celebrates First Win As A Senior Rider

Gifted young jockey Zac Lloyd has landed his first success since graduating from the apprentice ranks.

Former champion Sydney apprentice Zac Lloyd has wasted no time making an impact as a senior rider, posting his first win as a fully-fledged jockey aboard the Chris Waller-trained Ring Me Up at Rosehill on Saturday.

Lloyd, who started his career in country Queensland before serving the latter part of his apprenticeship under Godolphin head trainer James Cummings in the harbour city, came out of his time midweek but due to suspension, didn’t make his debut as a senior hoop until Saturday.

Around the mark at his first three rides, including a close second aboard Terrestar in the fourth race, Lloyd got the monkey off his back with a brilliant steer aboard the Ingham family-owned Ring Me Up in the Chandon Garden Spritz Handicap (1800m).

“I’ve had three rides and I’ve had a fourth, a third and a second, so it was coming,” Lloyd said.

“It was good to get a winner for Chris and the Inghams for my first win as a senior. Hopefully there are many more to come.”

Lloyd has been riding without a claim this season and sits in the top five on the Sydney jockeys’ premiership, mixing it with experienced hoops the ilk of James Mcdonald, Nash Rawiller and Kerrin Mcevoy.

He is widely regarded as prodigious talent, and Waller is among his many fans.

“He’s a shining star,” Waller said.

“He is in the right city to learn off the James’, the Nashs the Kerrins. It’s important we’ve got this younger generation coming through, when James (McDonald) ducks off to Hong Kong someone is there ready to fill the void.”

While acknowledging his senior milestone, 21-year-old Lloyd says it doesn’t feel much different given he has been competing without a claim for some time.

“It feels the same to me. People like to make a bit of a deal out of it, which is fair enough. It’s four years of your life where you’re in a routine and then you’ve obviously got to change it,” Lloyd said.

“But riding-wise, I don’t think much changes. I just ride horses in a circle and try to be the first to the winning post.”

Ring Me Up posted her fifth win in 10 starts and Waller expected her to more than pay her way over the summer.

“We thought enough of her to think she could be a Queensland Oaks filly. She didn’t end up getting there, but she is a promising horse who will improve with time,” Waller said.
