Gold Circle

The Mary Slack-owned Claymore by the Dubawi sire New Bay caused an upset at Royal Ascot yesterday under Adam Kirby when beating the 2/5 favourite Reach For The Moon (Sea The Stars) owned by The Queen in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes.

Kirby found the rail from draw two and set the pace.

Reach For The Moon, who was ridden by Frankie Dettori, was one-out on his quarter in second place.

In the straight Reach For The Moon ranged alongside and appeared set to go on to victory.

However, the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained French-bred Claymore fought back courageously.

Dettori appeared to battle to keep Reach For The Moon focused and his finish quickly petered out.

Claymore crossed the line 1,75 lengths clear.

He looks to have stallion potential and could well end up standing at Wilgerbosdrift or Mauritzfontein Stud.

New Bay is not only by the super sire Dubawi but he is related to Oasis Dream (Green Desert), who has sired 27 individual Group 1 winners. Among these Group 1 winners is Aqlaam, sire of Drakenstein Stud’s top class broodmare Imvula, the dam of Rain In Holland, Rain In Newmarket and Itsrainingwilliam. Imvula is a half-sister to Durban July winner Dancer’s Daughter.

Claymore is out of a High Chaparral mare.
