Competitive opener. Well-bred CAMILLE CLAUDEL attracted plenty of betting support when a promising 2nd on debut and should improve with that experience, so is a leading contender. MISS MARGUERITE also filled the runner-up berth on debut in a 2yo feature and, with the benefit of that outing, is expected to make her presence felt too. A TIME TO FLOWER has been 2nd in her last 2 starts and ought to stake a claim once more. There are, however, a number of newcomers who may have a role to play, especially if the market speaks in their favour. Well-bred INARA’S DYNASTY is of particular interest.
PIROSHKA built on the promise of his debut when running on well for 2nd over a shorter trip last time and the step-up in distance should bring about further improvement. FUTURE TURN was on debut when staying on well to finish ahead of CAPTAINE MAURICE, who was well supported, and could confirm the form of that meeting with a run under the belt and improvement expected. Both CHARLIE CROKER and TOTHEMOONANDBACK could also improve with the benefit of experience to have a say in the finish. Watch the betting on well-bred newcomers AMBER COAST, HOLY ORDERS and WILLIAM THE FIRST who could have a say.
Both INTIMIDATOR and LORD WILLIAM made promising debuts over a similar trip at Durbanville and with natural improvement should have more to offer. The former stayed on well to finish 4th behind an exciting newcomer and is only marginally preferred to the latter who was an encouraging 3rd behind a more-experienced useful sort. CORONATION TIME and LE MANS are also likely improvers after fair introductions (behind the aforementioned pair) and, as such, could pose a threat. Newcomers HEATHCLIFF, RED WILLIAM and ROYAL AUSSIE are worth montioring and any market support for them should be respected.
Small field of promising youngsters. AT MY COMMAND and HITHEMHARDSUNSHINE looked potentially smart sorts when winning around the turn at Durbanville first time out, justifying market support, and are likely to improve with experience – should fight it out. EPSOM GIRL has won both starts when fitted with blinkers and took out a 2yo fillies’ feature last time, so could pose a threat. SPYWING is 2kg better off with that rival for a 0.50-length beating and should make her presence felt too. SHIFTING PATH had excuses for not finishing closer last time and is capable of better.
Tricky, Special Weights Maiden. CRUIZIN CALIFORNIA, RED KITE and ZIPPY OVER are overdue following a number of placed efforts and are likely to play leading roles once more. On pedigree, DESTINED TO DANCE will be more at home over this trip but may lack fitness after a long layoff since her debut. FLUID MOTION and SENHORA VICTORIA have more scope than most and could improve stepped up to this distance, so are best kept safe. YOUCRACKMEUP started odds-on favourite in her only outing but disappointed, showing signs of inexperience. She ought to have improved since and could make amends – player.
Small but competitive line-up for this Listed feature, the 1st Leg of the fillies’ Winter Series. MARIA QUEROL wasn’t disgraced at her only attempt over 1600m in the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and, on that form, is a contender for top honours. SHE’S A RAINBOW is closely matched on that form and 1kg better off, so should have a say too. Stable companions DANCETILDAYLIGHT and GOING UP are talented 3yo fillies in their own right. Riding arrangements suggest the former is preferred but the latter remains unexposed and should have improvement to come going this trip for the first time – joker in pack.
Competitive renewal this Grade 3, Leg 1 of the Winter Series. PACAYA was strongly fancied to win the traditional Derby trial (G3) when last seen. He could only manage 5th on that occasion but wasn’t disgraced, having made the running, and has subsequently been gelded – likely to have improved, so rates the one to beat on favourable weight terms. FUTURE PRINCE has won both starts since he was gelded and impressed under a big weight last time – still on the up so the biggest danger. Versatile GEM KING and improving SUGAR MOUNTAIN are those most likely keep the principals honest. Good race!
Open. RIVER CAFE disappointed last time but is capable of better and dangerous off her current rating. BELLE ROUGE pleased on handicap debut and could have more to offer going this trip with improved fitness on her side. GLOBAL GODDESS caught the eye with a fast-finishing 3rd over further last time and should have a say if repeating that performance over this trip despite a 2-point rise. CRACKLIN’ ROSE and MAGICAL JAVA are distance suited and holding form at this level. POLAR WORLD improved with cheekpieces on last run and should enjoy the extra. PARISIENNE GIRL is improving and can follow up.
NAVY STRENGTH has proved costly to follow but, despite conceding weight to most, remains the one to beat on the strength and consistency of his form. AENEAS has been threatening to exit the maiden ranks and gets 2kg from that rival. He showed improvement over this trip with blinkers fitted last time and is likely to pose the biggest threat with a repeat of that effort. HOME JAMES, RUN RUDOLPH RUN and ELECTRIC WARRIOR have scope to improve and, if doing so, could make their presence felt. FOREVER BILL and AUTUMN MOON could also take home a cheque.
