A stalwart of the industry, Ebrahim Khan, one of South Africa’s leading thoroughbred owners in the first few years of this millennium, made a welcome return to the sport via purchases at last year’s Cape Racing Ready To Run and Unbroken Two-Year-Old Sale held at Hollywoodbets Durbanville and he came back with a vengeance today (Thursday) at day one of the BSA August Two-year-old Sale.
Ebrahim Khan bought no fewer than three seven figure lots today (Thursday) and he bought eight horses in all to be the top buyer on the day with an aggregate of R4,480,000 and an average of R560,000.
Former SA Champion jockey Mark Khan has recently become a trainer and he was in fact the prompt for Ebrahim to come back.
They are no relation but Mark rode many of Ebrahim’s prominent runners in the latter’s heyday, including star colt Elusive Fort, who won both the 2006 G1 Derby and Gr 1 Daily News 2000; 2005 G2 Gold Bowl and G3 Gold Vase winner Saddlewood; and top-level sprinter Safe Structure, who won the G3 Tommy Hotspur.
Two of Mark Khan’s winners as a trainer have been owned by Ebrahim Khan.
So it looks likely that he will be the trainer of Ebrahim’s purchases.
Khan bought one lot by his SA Derby hero Elusive Fort and he had to go to R400,000 to clinch this colt. The colt is out of Ride The Rails mare Estimada who is from the same famous Argentinian-descended “E” family that Elusive Fort is from. Estimada is in fact a half-sister to the great Empress Club.
Ebrahim got a nice variety though with two Hawwaams, one Gimmethegreenlight, one Querari, one Flower Alley, one Rafeef, one New Predator and one by the previously mentioned Elusive Fort.
