One quote that still rings in the ears from last season is Mike de Kock saying Dave The King was a horse who could win anywhere in the world. The powerful galloper with the massive stride went on to be named Equus Horse Of The Year.
He is by the Eastern Cape-based Ascot Stud sire Global View, who is not fashionable, but who now has another horse in Cape Town who is making waves.
That horse, Aspect, is also out of a Jet Master mare, just as Dave The King is.
Jet Master, as well as being a seven times champion sire, was also a many-times champion broodmare sire.
So there must still be plenty of good Jet Master mares around.
Could this lead to Global View being sent some higher profile Jet Master mares?
Cape Breeders wrote this week about the success of Aspect (read below):
Ascot Stud’s inform sire Global View, whose progeny include reigning South African Horse Of The Year Dave The King, looks to have come up with yet another smart performer in the form of Aspect.
The latter made it five wins in a row when winning impressively at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday afternoon.
Trained by Vaughan Marshall, Aspect, who benefitted from a wind-op earlier in his career, was making his first start since April when he lined up in Saturday’s Soetendal Estate Class 3 (1400m).
Given a perfect ride from Mpumelelo Mjoka, the five-year-old, diagnosed as a wobbler earlier on, stormed home to win going away by a length.
Bred by Ridgemont Highlands, Aspect, whose five wins have all come over 1400m, is out of the Jet Master mare Sky Castle and is thus bred on the same cross as Dave The King.
His sire Global View, whose own sire Galileo recently came up with a 100th G1 winner, had a wonderful season in 2023-2024, with his son Dave The King landing both the G1 Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge and G1 The HKJC Champions Cup.
Also runner-up in the 2024 G1 Wilgerbosdrift H F Oppeheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, Dave The King was not only crowned Horse Of The Year for the past season but also named Equus Champion Older Male for 2023-2024.
His sire Global View, South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire Of 2019-2020, was also responsible for Rule Book (Listed 4Racing Caradoc Gold Cup) and Fairy Knight (Listed East Cape Guineas/Listed Ibhayi Stakes) last season.
