American Bob Baffert won the Dubai World Cup for the fourth time and it was also a fourth win for Frankie Detorri as he produced the five-year-old entire Country Grammer (Tonalist) with a sustained run.
The horse they were calling the best in the world all week, Life Is Good (Into Mischief), broke well which augured well for his dominating style.
He had them all off the bit turning for home, but Country Grammer, who had sat on the inner in third place in the running began staying on resolutely and it was clear from some way out he was going to catch the tiring Life Is Good.
The latter did not appear to stay the trip.
Country Grammer, who was coming off a second place finish in the world’s richest raced, The Saudi Cup, won by a comfortable 1,75 lengths in the end.
Fellow American Hot Rod Charlie (Oxbow) was second.
Japanese horse Chuwa Wizard (King Kamehameha) was half-a-length further back in third, a short-head in front of a disappointing Life Is Good.
The Saudi Cup third-placed Midnight Bourbon (Tinow), also American, finished fifth.
51-year-old Dettori won the big race for the first time in 2000 with Dubai Millenium (Seeking The Gold) and later won it with Moon Ballad (Singspiel) in 2003 and Electrocutionist (Red Ransom) in 2006.
Baffert won it with Silver Charm (Silver Buck) in 1998, Captain Steve (Fly So Free) in 2001 and Arrogate (Unbridled’s Song) in 2017.
