SA Classic Looks Open And Full Of Intrigue
Splittheeights won the Gr 2 TAB Gauteng Guineas more cosily than the margin suggests and must have a big chance of following up in the Gr 1 TAB SA Classic over 1800m, but the race is full of questions and will be a most intriguing contest (JC Photos)
TAB Gauteng Guineas winner Splittheeights will be out to land the second leg of the SA Triple Crown, the Gr 1 HKJC World Pool SA Classic over 1800m, but will need to beat his Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained stablemate Jan Van Goyen and the contest for top honours definitely does not end there.
There is little between the pair on strict formlines with Jan Van Goyen beating Tin Pan Alley by 3,70 lengths when winning the Gr 1 World Pool Moment Of The Day Premier’s Champions Stakes over 1600m and Splittheeights beating that same horse by 2,45 lengths in the Gauteng Guineas, although Jan Van Goyen did beat a below par Tin Pa Alley by nearly eight lengths in the Jackpot City Dingaans; Jan Van Goyen lost to Trust by 0,70 lengths in the Jackpot City Dingaans, although the race did not pan out well and he was returning from a layoff, while Splittheeights beat Trust by an official 0,90 lengths in the Gauteng Guineas; Jan Van Goyen beat All Systems Go by 4,40 lengths in the Dingaans, while Splittheeights beat All Systems Go by 6,85 lengths in the Gauteng Guineas.
Jan Van Goyen’s easy and impressive win by 2,75 lengths in the Gr 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas has subsequently been proven to be a good but not exceptional victory, because the exciting prospect Note To Self performed to the same level when runner up in Saturday’s Gr 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby over 2000m.
Jan Van Goyen failed in the Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate when palpably going too fast in pursuit of pacemaker Dave The King, but an interesting point to note is that the horse that went the same speed as him, Legal Counsel, beat him by 4,65 lengths. Legal Counsel then proved he was a good horse by running second in the WSB Met.
That King’s Plate run might also have been a flat run from Jan Van Goyen.
His time in the Cape Guineas was average, whereas Splittheeights time in the Guteng Guineas was the quickest since Monk’s Hood beat subsequent Gr 1 winner Surcharge by 5,90 lengths in 2018.
However, Jan Van Goyen pulled off an incredible feat to win the Cape Guineas because it was two weeks after the Dingaans and required a long journey from Johanneburg to Cape Town to get there. His subsequent King’s Plate run was entitled to be below his best.
Jan Van Goyen is the dual Gr 1 winner of the pair and it is little secret of how high the regard for him is.
Both horses are by sires who would have easily got the 1800m trip of the SA Classic.
However, their female lines are quite speedy, so the 1800m trip being suitable is not a given.
Splittheeights looked to have a bit in hand when winning the Gauteng Guineas and his second dam, Pacific Lights by Al Mufti, won up to 1800m.
If the best horse is all about the top line i.e. the best stallion, then Splittheeights emerges on top as he is by the phenomenal Vercingetorix, whereas Jan Van Goyen is by the good but not phenomenal sire Master Of My Fate.
It is going to be a highly intriguing race which will require some more thought and study before committing to one or other of the pair.
Trust might even end up being tipped ahead of them.
Trust is by the former SA Classic winner Heavenly Blue out of a Frankel mare Frankly. There is also a lot speed close up in that female line, but Trust was doing eye-catching late work in the Gauteng Guineas after being hampered and he has been shown in the past to have an exceptional late surge when at his best.
Grand Empire ran on well for second in the Gauteng Guineas and is by Vercingetorix out of a Potala Palace mare whose only win was over 1000m as a juvenile in a Gr 3 event. He is progressive and on the up, but once again the 1800m trip is not a given.
Joe Soma is pound for pund one of the most successful Gr 1-winning trainers in the country and has a fine record in this race. He has just a small yard and yet won this Gr 1 event three times in the space of five years with 36/1 shot Lobo’s Legend in 2018, with the top class Got The Greenlight in 2020, although he started 14/1 that day, and with the 25/1 chance Red Saxon in 2022.
This year Soma has the unexposed but exciting Erroll Flynn in the line up. This ultra progressive sort has won his last two over 1450m and 1600m by 4,50 lengths and three lengths respectively and looks the part. The long-striding Master Of My Fate gelding was dropped out to last in the 1600m event and made up the ground quite effortlessly. He was only running off an 88, but he has plenty of scope. His What Winter dam’s two wins were over 1400m and 1600m.
One Eye On Vegas is believed to have stamina limitations being by Buffalo Bill Cody, but he ran on from last to be beaten just 0,90 lengths in the Gauteng Guineas, and although his one-time winning Fastnet Rock dam’s win was over 1600m, she ran plenty of places and most of them were from 1800m to 2100m. Furthermore, she was out of a Sadller’s Well mare, so this De Kock-trained stablemate to the more fancied pair could be the dark horse from draw seven under Gavin Lerena. An intriguing fact in One Eye On Vegas’s formlines is that he beat Erroll Flynn who was making his debut, by 9,55 lengths when cruising in by 7,25 lengths in his second career start over 1450m last September.
The other De Kock-trained runner Yipee Kiyay could do better than in the Gauteng Guineas if ridden more conservatively, but he is not the most scopey sort and does not make much appeal here.
All Systems Go should enjoy the step up in trip being by Gimmethegreenlight out of a Dynasty mare, but he looks well held.
Radio Star has run well in a couple of ordinary races, but has been well beaten in the two Graded races he has participated in.
It should be a cracking race and one for the purist to look forward to.

See It Again Heads A Top Class Horse Chestnut Stakes Field
See It Again will be out to land a fourth career Gr 1 at Turffontein Standside on Saturday (Picture: Wayne Marks)
The Gr 1weight for age HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, to be run over 1600m at Turffontein Standside on Saturday, will have its best field for many a season, even if there are only nine runners.
The Gr 1 SA Classic and Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic have also attracted smallish but quality fields.
The Horse Chestnut shapes as a mile championship featuring the L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner The Real Prince against See It Again, who was an unlucky 0,25 length third in the King’s Plate before winning the WSB Met.
The Highveld challenge is led by Main Defender, who defeated the subsequently named Equus Horse Of The Year Dave The King by 2,75 lengths when winning this race in 2024.
Last year’s winner and runner up, Cosmic Speed and Texas Red are also in the line up.
There is is also the reigning Highveld Horse Of The Year Fire Attack, whose King’s Plate run can be ignored as his preparation was interrupted and he proved it was all wrong when bouncing back to win first time out back on the Highveld.
His Alec Laird-trained stablemate Atticus Finch, a former Gr 1 Betway Summer Cup winner, was impressive when waltzing home to a three length win in this season’s Gr 2 Allied- Steelrode Onamission Charity Mile, despite carrying topweight.
The 117-rated three-year-old Tin Pan Alley has been preferred for this race as it is probably a more suitable trip for him than the Gr 1 SA Classic over 1800m.
The field is completed by Pressonregardless, who is outgunned on paper, but he has come into his own this season and possesses a lot of class.
See It Again is officially rated 130, so is officially 1kg better off with The Real Prince, who is rated 128.
On L’Ormarin’s King’s Plate form it is The Real Prince who emerges the victor by 0,25 lengths, but See It Again had to wait a tad to get into top gear in that race due to Dave The King falling back on him and that might have made the difference between victory and defeat.
On WSB Met form See It Again emerges the victor as The Real Prince was beaten 1,25 lengths into third.
See It Again had tough draws in both the King’s Plate and the Met, ten out of 14 and ten out of ten, and he has now drawn eight out of nine.
The draw should not bother him as he has a magnificent turn of foot.
Richard Fourie replaces the injured Andrew Fortune, a top class jockey for a top class jockey, so that is a further bonus to See It Again’s chances.
The Real Prince, who is also a Hollywoodbets Durban July winner, drew six in both the KIng’s Plate and Met and is now drawn seven. He also has a magnificent turn of foot and has his regular top class rider in Craig Zackey up.
Main Defender has his second run after a long layoff and came last in his comeback over 1160m in a small field. He has an exhilarating turn of foot at his best and has drawn well in four with the world class reigning champion jockey Gavin Lerena up.
Fire Attack will be running on strongly from draw five under Calvin Habib.
Cosmic Speed drew three when winning last year under Zackey and is now drawn six under Ryan Munger. However, he has 3,45 lengths and 3,20 lengths to make up on The Real Prince and See It Again respectively from King’s Plate form.
Texas Red was drawn five last year and has pole position this year with Matsunyane retaining the ride, but its a much tougher field.
If the Atticus Finch who won the Charity Mile turns up, he must have a chance from draw three, but he hasn’t been seen since being pulled up with something amiss in the Summer Cup. He was also last in the July, after having epistaxis.
Tin Pan Alley beat older horses in the Gr 2 Betway Jo’Burg Spring Challenge over 1450m, but Atticus Finch emerges better here at the weights on the form of that race and Tin Pan Alley might prefer the shorter 1450m trip. However, he has drawn well in two and Keagan de Melo is up.
Pressonregardless has Callan Murray up, but not only has to jump from draw nine out of nine, but he is officially 10,5kg under sufferance with the best in See It Again. He can’t be completly discounted though because this long-striding sort will relish the fast pace generated by a better class of horse, provided he finds cover from that wide draw.

Hazy Dazy Could Take The Next Step To Triple Tiara Glory
Hazy Dazy was an easy and impressive 25/1 winner of the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas, confirming the form of her win in the Gr 3 Fillies Mile, and this time she has been respected by the bookmakers (JC Photos)
The Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic over 1800m has a field of ten and eight of them ran in the Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.
Hazy Dazy won that race easily despite still looking a touch green and although she is out of an Eightfold Path mare whose only win was over 1160m she has already won over 2000m before and willl relish the step up to 1800m.
Charge It by Gimmethegreenlight is a full-sister to Gr 1 Daily News 2000 winner Surcharge, so will also relish the step up in trip and can finish second to Hazy Dazy for the third time.
Littlemissmillion was running on well in the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas and looks likely to enjoy the step up in trip.
Golden Palm by Master Of My Fate is out of a Var mare and she will have to be ridden more conservatively than she was in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas if she is to improve on her 3,10 length third place finish in the latter race.
Loweveld Lily should be staying on well and could earn again.
Drumnadrochit will enjoy the step up in trip and has Richard Fourie up from a fair draw.
Daisy Jones could sneak a place from a good draw.
Tina Lovelace has proved disappointing, while Scarlett Heart and Merryweather face big steps up in class.

Note To Self Joins Jan Van Goyen On 118
Note To Self has been raised to 118 after finishing second in the Gr 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby. Wish List, who received a gender allowance of 2,5kg, was raised two points to 117 due to the ease of her win. Note To Self is now the joint-highest rated three-year-old in the land together with Jan Van Goyen (Picture: Wayne Marks)
NHA Press Release
Handicapping Ratings Update
Lucky Fish Cape Derby (Grade 1)
WISH LIST has been assigned a revised merit rating of 117 (up from 115) following her commanding victory in the Grade 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby for three-year-olds over 2000m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth this past Saturday.
In assessing the event, the Handicappers noted that WISH LIST entered the feature as the best-weighted runner based on her pre-race merit rating. Despite the official winning margin of 0.75 lengths, the panel determined that she won with significantly greater ease than the numerical distance suggests, justifying the two-point increase.
To establish the level of the race, the Handicappers identified fourth-placed STAR MAJOR and fifth-placed HAPPY VERSE as the appropriate line horses, leaving their ratings unchanged at 114 and 113, respectively. This decision was supported by the fact that both runners confirmed their relativity, as established in the Grade 3 Politician Stakes. In that event, STAR MAJOR defeated HAPPY VERSE by the same margin that separated them on Saturday, providing a highly consistent and solid benchmark for the Grade 1 Lucky Fish Derby.
Additional Adjustments:
· NOTE TO SELF (Runner-up): Elevated from 96 to 118 after beating the 114 and 113-rated line horses by 2.45 and 2.65 lengths respectively at level weight terms.
· VIVA’S LIBERTE (3rd Place): Increased from 95 to 114 for finishing 0.2 lengths ahead of the 114-rated STAR MAJOR at level weight terms.
Merit Rating Reductions:
· PAY THE PALACE: Adjusted downwards from 105 to 104.
· BETTER MAN: Adjusted downwards from 105 to 104.
These changes will ensure that the runners of the Grade 1 Lucky Fish Derby meet on correct handicap terms in the future, while ensuring that the hierarchical pecking order is accurate and the race remains truly representative of a Grade 1 event.
Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes (Grade 2)
QUESTIONING has retained his official merit rating of 127 following his victory in the Grade 2 Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.
In assessing the event, the Handicappers were of the view that QUESTIONING – who entered the race as the best-weighted runner – firmly confirmed the 127 level he established in the Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate (WFA). Consequently, he was utilised as the benchmark to assess the field, resulting in his rating remaining unchanged.
Merit Rating Increases:
· O’TENIKWA (Runner-up): Adjusted from 118 to 121 after finishing 2.5 lengths behind the 127-rated winner at level weights.
· ALL THE RAGE: Lifted from 112 to 114.
· TEFLON MAN: Adjusted from 102 to 106 to ensure he is rated at least equal to King Regent, whom he defeated at level weights.
Merit Rating Reductions:
· CAFE CULTURE: Dropped from 120 to 118.
· LUCKY LAD: Reduced from 121 to 118.
· MEU CAPITANO: Decreased slightly from 112 to 111.
Splashout Prix Du Cap (Grade 3)
Following her victory in the Grade 3 SplashOut Prix du Cap over 1400m, PRINCESS OF GAUL has had her merit rating adjusted from 113 to 114.
In assessing the event, the Handicappers utilised the winner as the benchmark, aligning her performance with the 114 she achieved in her penultimate start (the Listed Windhoek Olympic Duel Stakes), but could not be adjusted to 114 on that occasion due to the race conditions that limited the increase for placed runners to a maximum of three points.
Merit Rating Increases:
· STORMWATCH (Runner-up): Elevated from 102 to 109.
· SWIATEK: Lifted from 100 to 104.
Merit Rating Reductions:
· ROCCAPINA: Dropped from 111 to 109.
· CALL ME SECRET: Reassessed from 105 to 102.
OTT Cape Fillies Classic (Listed)
BEACH VERSE has earned a revised merit rating of 97, up from 85, after capturing the OTT Cape Fillies Classic (Listed) over 1800m. In assessing the race, the Handicappers used QUEEN REGENT, the runner‑up, as the key horse and as such, her rating remained unchanged at 94.
The third‑place finisher, KUBU, also received a merit rating increase, rising from 81 to 92 after finishing 1.25 lengths behind the 94‑rated line horse at level weights.
The only reduction in this race was applied to UKUDUMA, who dropped from 93 to 91.
Play ‘N Go Jet Master Stakes (Listed)
JET FORCE, who had previously been adjusted 27 points for finishing 6th in the Grade 2 Green Point Stakes, had his merit rating increased to 117 from 115 following his victory in the Listed Play ‘N Go Jet Master Stakes over 1600m. In assessing the race, the Handicappers identified CAPTAIN WEST, the fifth-place finisher, as the most appropriate line horse. His rating remained unchanged at 102.
The following runners also received merit rating increases after this race:
· I SALUTE YOU increased from 107 to 112 for finishing 1.25 lengths in front of the 102-rated line horse while conceding 8 points or 4kg in weight, making his performance 10 points superior.
· ZEITZ was raised from 101 to 104.
· GALLIC DREAM was adjusted from 100 to 102.
GEM KING was the only runner to receive a reduction, dropping from 112 to 110.
Masks Of Fire Kenilworth Cup (Listed)
TENPENNY, who was rated to win, had his official merit rating increased from 103 to 105 after winning the Masks of Fire Kenilworth Cup (Listed) over 2500m. In assessing the race, the Handicappers identified LANDOFTHERISINGSUN, the runner-up, as the line horse. His rating remained unchanged at 99.
The specific race conditions did not permit merit rating increases for placed runners. As a result, no further adjustments were made. This condition has been adopted because of the belief that the fear of merit rating adjustments is the primary reason for small field sizes. However, available data suggests otherwise.
For example, the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas and Grade 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate, which had no ratings protection, attracted fields of 15 and 14 runners respectively, while the Grade 1 Lucky Fish Cape Derby drew 8 runners. By contrast, the Masks Of Fire Kenilworth Cup, which protected runners from upward adjustments, attracted only 4 runners. Similarly, the recent Pinnacle event on the Highveld, also run under rating protection, drew just 3 runners.
This raises an important question: are rating protections genuinely effective in resolving the issue of small field sizes, or are they instead rooted in the misguided belief that merit rating adjustments are the primary cause of reduced participation? The evidence points in another direction. From the examples above, no rational observer can conclude with certainty that merit rating increases alone are responsible for diminished fields. Apportioning blame to the Handicappers solely, has simply become the convenient, yet unfounded, narrative. A deeper delve into the issue needs to be done urgently.
Breeders Guineas (Listed)
ANOTHERDANCEFORME, yet another best-weighted runner to find the winner’s enclosure this weekend, has retained her official merit rating of 110 following her emphatic victory in the Listed Breeders Guineas for three-year-old fillies over 1600m at Fairview Racecourse on Friday.
In assessing the performance, the Handicappers unanimously agreed to utilise the third-place finisher, ROYAL CITY GIRL, as the line horse. Consequently, her rating remains unchanged at 93.
Despite several runners performing above their official merit ratings, no further adjustments could be made due to race conditions that preclude increases for placed runners.

North Point Out To Claim A Hattrick
North Point has been tipped to win Race 2 at Hollywoodbets Durbanville, a Middle Stakes event over 1000m, although the grey does not have an easy task at the weights with Elusive Winter, who is second best in at the weights behind the filly Candy Town (Picture: Wayne Marks)
Alistair Cohen (Race Coast)
Expect the pace to be blistering in race 2 over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Durbanville today. Some of the quickest in Cape Town will test their pace against each other. With the promise of a hot speed, the one who could sit back and wait to pounce could be the most dangerous. That is the talented North Point as he continues his rise through the ranks.
Setback by injury for a few months, many forgot the promise North Point showed as a two-year-old toppling the likes of Demanding Dave. From five starts he claimed two wins and two places through his juvenile campaign. Rested between May and November 2025, expectations might have been curbed slightly for his return.
He lost none of his exuberance and obvious natural ability. To return to the course in the form that he has is the mark of a talented horse. After six months away from racing he came back with a superb 0,4-length second behind Demanding Dave over this trip at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. He hit the line with plenty of gusto suggesting that he would be hugely dangerous in his next run. Keep in mind that Demanding Dave has now completed three wins-on-the-bounce.
North Point duly followed up with a classy win over subsequent winner, Black Eagle over the same Hollywoodbets Kenilworth trip. He might be one-dimensional in that he is best over the minimum trip but there are serious races in that range.
With Elusive Winter and Candy Town in this race, they are likely to do what they do best. Their best assets are their speed which should allow North Point to have horses who have battled it out up front to aim at. It is never as simple as wait and pounce but he should have every opportunity judging how the race should transpire. JP van der Merwe knows him best and he takes the ride for James Crawford.
Elusive Winter never does things the easy way. His speed is a weapon and that has carried him to five wins and eight places through his career. Michelle Rix has done a fine job keeping this horse on the boil. He was hammered early by the handicapper for winning on debut so patience had to be exercised for him to spark into life. One can be sure that despite his brave but vulnerable running style, that he has tons of tenacity to pull this off. Especially with Sifiso Bungane taking 4kg off his back.
Candy Town is another known element of pace. She probably has more natural gas but she is prone to the odd howler. Her cheap speed makes her interesting on a dry track but she is not the easiest to follow. At her best, she is very dangerous. Keagan de Melo takes the ride.
Fort Yukon ran his best race in his most recent appearance and he could confirm that improvement against a rather poor field in race 1 over 1600m. His last run came over 1400m down the road at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth and he finished second behind Cedar Point. That elevation in form and proximity to the winner should be enough to propel him to victory. Calvin Habib rode him last time and he is back aboard for Adam Marcus.
There are a few with chances in race 3 over 1000m. Lyrical Gangster has always suggested some promise but he has fallen short of kicking on from a rather weak level. He might still have the tools to make progress and he could be the horse to beat. He left the maiden ranks in his penultimate run when he reverted to this trip and he followed up with a neat second post-maiden. He might have a little more scope than his rivals.
Kamchatka is the most interesting runner in race 4 over 1250m. She gave the entire field stacks of weight in the Clapham Stakes over 1600m exactly a month ago. She was not disgraced when she finished fifth behind her stable companion, Rose Woott. If she can fit into this sprint trip, she will take a ton of beating. Her exploits this summer read well with runs to Legal Counsel and Sukhumvit. Legal Counsel was runner-up in the Grade 1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met.
There is a good spread of chances in race 5 over 1250m. Star World could be peaking at the right time to score an overdue second career victory. She has placed in her last two starts which came over this course and distance. Richard Fourie sticks with her for Vaughan Marshall. She finished ahead of Final Call last time and he is 4kg better off for two lengths. That should keep her ahead of a rival with a chance. Others to consider are Flying South, William’s Woman and South Of France.
Gin Palace was a fluent winner of her most recent start when she beat South Of France by a length over 1400m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Andrew Fortune did duty on her last time and the run before when his irons snapped and he was of no assistance. She is tipped to complete back-to-back wins in race 6 over 1400m. Corne Orffer has won on Gin Palace before and he replaces the medically indisposed Andrew Fortune. Dream Searcher could be her main danger. She gets on so well with jockey Craig Bantam. They are never easy to ignore.
A simple view of Show Off’s last run which came over 1400m at this course will remind racing fans just how unlucky he was. He was baulked twice and after he came from the clouds to finish second behind Boogiefied, beaten 0,4 lengths. No fault of Gareth Wright aboard, he should have won. He is back over the same course and distance in race 7. Consider chances from King’s Quest, Astronomical Boy and Nightrain.
There is not much to get excited about in race 8 over 1400m. Theleia could prove to confirm her better last run when she ran second behind Peaches And Cream over this course and distance. She has always given the impression that she needs time and racing. Things seem to be falling into place.
Millstream Farm Offer Blue Blooded Draft At Premier Sale
Millstream Farm’s Sale draft will command attention from buyers

From the exciting Grand Empire and Gr 3 Betway Victory Moon Stakes winner The Ultimate King (both raised by Millstream on behalf of Al Adiyaat) to exciting sprinter All The Rage, Millstream Farm looks on course to enjoy plenty of success in the months ahead.
Jan Mantel will be bringing an exciting draft to this year’s Premier Yearling Sale. Not only does Millstream’s draft including yearlings sired by the likes of Eden Roc, Fire Away, Gimmethegreenlight, Jet Dark, Legislate and Vercingetorix, it also contains lots hailing from some of the best families in the South African stud book. Below are five potential standout lots:
Lot 59: c Gimmethegreenlight – Quetta:
By a multiple champion sire, whose progeny include recent Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate winner The Real Prince, this colt is a half-brother to this season’s Gr 3 1Voucher Victress Stakes winner Sukhumvit and Gr 1 ARF Commemorative Cape Derby runner up Sachdev. Tellingly, this is also the family of Gimmethegreenlight’s globetrotting champion Gimme A Nother.
Lot 76: Windswept f The United States – Savannah Leigh:
By the same sire as recent Gr 1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship winner Kingdundee as well as the top-class filly Rodeo Drive, Windswept is a half-sister to four winners notably multiple graded stakes winning filly Green Plains. This is the family of 2025 Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes winner Cosmic Speed.
Lot 110: c Legislate – Strawberry Light:
This colt shares his inform sire Legislate with this season’s graded stakes winners Wish List, Legal Counsel and Regulation. Lot 139: Hello Darkness f Jet Dark – Warm Welcome:
From the first crop of five-time Gr 1 winner Jet Dark, Hello Darkness is out of a twice winning Gimmethegreenlight half-sister to the stakes placed Silverlinks. Her granddam, Gr 3 Fillies Mile winner Close The Gap, is very closely related to champions Horse Chestnut and Monyela to name but two.
Lot 242: c Vercingetorix – Gimme Dat:
By South Africa’s reigning champion sire, this colt is out of the regally bred Gr 2 Cartier Sceptre Stakes/Gr 3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery winner Gimme Dat. Beach Verse Becomes Fifth Stakes Winner For Beach Beauty
Beach Verse (Vercingetorix) becomes the fifth stakes winner for Drakenstein Stud’s fairytale former Equus Champion Broodmare, Beach Beauty (Picture: Wayne Marks)
Beach Beauty’s career is one of the all time fairytale stories of the South African turf and the small Dynasty mare, herself a five-times Gr 1-winning champion, has now produced a fifth stakes winner at stud.
The Candice Bass-trained Beach Verse relished the step up in trip to 1800m in the Listed OTT Cape Fillies Classic at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday under Aldo Domeyer and she was thus able to win by a cosy 1,25 lengths despite officially being 4,5kg under sufferance with the best weighted Queen Regent, who finished second.
Both fillies started at 9/4 odds in the three-year-old fillies contest.
Beach Verse is now a winner of 3 races with 5 places from 9 starts for stakes of R351 738.
Beach Verse, who is a Drakenstein Stud homebred, provided yet another stakes winner for the sire phenomenon Vercingetorix.
He has now had 13 stakes winners this season of 17 races and is just about on track to break his own record set last season of 23 stakes winners of 33 races.
Drakenstein are quiet on the stakes-winning front this season by their standards, having either bettered or equaled the SA stakes-winning record for the previous four seasons consecutively.
The record Drakestein equaled last season was 21 stakes winners and they have a long way to go to match it this season with five stakes winners of five races to date.
Beach Beauty has only had seven runners and has five stakes winners and one stakes-placed horse.
Today's Question
Who is the only Northern Hemisphere broodmare to produce five Gr 1 winners?
The picture is of the subject (Sky Sports Racing)
Today’s Question Answer
Picture: Quevega
Hasili (12 March 1991 – 23 March 2018) was a French Thoroughbred racehorse who was an outstanding broodmare. A Khalid Abdullah homebred at his Juddmonte Farms, she was out of the mare Kerali and sired by Kahyasi, winner of the 1988 Irish and Epsom Derbys. Hasili won the Prix des Sablonnets at Nantes at age two and was placed in two Listed races at three.
Retired to broodmare duty, Hasili produced Cacique, Champs Elysees, Banks Hill, Intercontinental, and Heat Haze who together made her the first Northern Hemisphere broodmare to produce five Group/Grade I winners, all of which are racing millionaires.
