See It Again Puts In Fine Gallop Ahead Of Jo'Burg Raid

Three top Cape horses have been entered in the Gr 1 wfa R1.5 million HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes, one of three open wfa Gr 1 miles in the country, to be run at Turffontein Standside on March 7, and one of them, the WSB Met hero See It Again, put up a fine gallop on the Summerveld grass this morning.
Justin Snaith has entered both See It Again and Sail The Seas, while Dean Kannemeyer has entered the Hollywodbets Durban July and L’Ormarin’s King’s Plate victor The Real Prince.
Snaith has signaled his intent by declaring Richard Fourie aboard See It Again, with the unfortunate Andrew Fortune missing out due to the fall at Fairview on Friday that has sidelined him.
The Real Prince is also a definite runner if all goes well with his preparation at Summerveld.
That was according to Jehan Malherbe, racing manager of The Real Prince’s owner and breeder, Khaya Stables.
See It Again was a touch unlucky in the King’s Plate and has just 0,25 lengths to find on The Real Prince, while Sail The Seas has just 0,45 lengths to find on The Real Prince, so if the trio do line up it will be a huge boost to the quality of the event.
That is not to say a win for one of them will be a formality.
However, the lesson learnt by Kommetdieding’s journey in 2022, in which he was transported to the Highveld and prepared up there before running two disappointing races as odds on favourite, is that it is better to prepare horses out of Summerveld and raid for the race.
Justin Snaith will be shifting his time allocation towards KZN with the Cape Summer Season nearing its end and the Champions Season fast approaching.
He was there to see See It Again working this morning under Tristan Godden.
Stable companion Great Plains gave See It Again a lead and the star six-year-old then moved alongside, travelling easily and striding out well.
The Real Prince is also being prepared out of Summerveld, although he has not been there for long.
There are some top quality Highveld entries in the Horse Chestnut.
Among them is the 2024 winner Main Defender, who beat a top quality field by 2,75 lengths that year with the season’s eventual Horse Of The Year Dave The King finshing second.
Last year he missed the race, but did win his next race, the Gr 2 Hawaii Stakes over 1400m before being given an eleven month layoff, which ended last week in a 1160m race in which he came last. The Horse Chestnut might come too soon for him.
The defending Horse Chestnut Champion, the Sean Tarry-trained Cosmic Speed, is also an entry.
The Alec Laird-trained pair Fire Attack and Atticus Finch are two other Gr 1-winning entries.
Tin Pan Alley, Grand Empire and Trust are three-year-old entries, although all three are also entered in Gr 1 SA Classic over 1800m.

Jan Van Goyen And Hazy Dazy Head The Classic Fields
Hazy Dazy should relish the step up in trip in the Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic over 1800m (JC Photos)
Dual Gr 1 winner Jan van Goyen heads the Gr 1 SA Classic (1800m) entries and his Mike and Mathew de Kock-trained stablemates Splittheeights and One Eye On Vegas, first and fourth in the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas, are also entries.
The Candice and Tammy Dawson-trained Trust, who defeated Jan Van Goyen in the Gr 2 Jackpot City Dingaans and was third in the Gauteng Guineas, is also entered.
An interesting entry is the Joe Soma-trained Errol Flynn, who was beaten 9,55 lengths by One Eye On Vegas on debut, but has since then won two races over 1450m and 1600m respectively in impressive style, although his time in the 1600m race was 1.15 seconds slower than Splittheeights’ Gauteng Guineas time on the same day and he was carrying 3,5kg less than the latter too.
In the Gr 1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic, SA Fillies Mile and Gr 2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas winner Hazy Dazy heads the entries.
The Gauteng Fillies Guineas respective second and third, Charge It and Golden Palm, are also entries.
Golden Palm, who was the Equus Champion Two-year-old filly last season, is the only Gr 1 winner in the field. She won the Douglas Whyte Thekwini Stakes over 1600m as a two-year-old.
The Justin Snaith-trained Lowveld Lily, fourth in the Gauteng Fillies Guineas, is one of two out of province entries tother with Charge It, who is trained by Alyson Wright.
The entries for the two races can be seen below:

USA Supreme Court Ruling Favours EU And SA Bloodstock
Donald Trump’s Controversial Tariffs Struck Out By US Supreme Court
TDN
Industry stakeholders within the European bloodstock business will have cause for relief after Donald Trump’s controversial tariffs were struck down by the US Supreme Court on Friday.
The news is likely to be good news for South African thoroughbreds traveling to the USA too.
A cloud of uncertainty had been hovering over the movement of horses to the US since Trump’s tariffs were first mooted last year.
However, with a 6-3 majority, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority when he imposed tariffs via a law reserved for national emergencies. They also said that he needs congressional approval to impose taxes on imports.
It has been reported that over 1,600 horses have been permanently imported into America from Britain and Ireland alone over the past four years.
Under Trump’s tariffs, imports arriving from Britain were due to incur a 10 per cent tariff, while those coming from the EU were to be charged 15 per cent.
Not only does Friday’s announcement have a major impact on sales companies such as Goffs, Arqana and Tattersalls, but the quashing of any tariffs is also good news to the private horses-in-training market, which has been so strong historically.
Trump told reporters the Supreme Court’s ruling was “deeply disappointing” and that he’s ashamed of “certain members of the court for not having the courage to do what’s right for our country”.
He also went on to say “other alternatives will now be used to replace” the tariff plan after it was rejected by the Supreme Court, signaling that he intends to pursue a revised path forward on trade policy. “We have alternatives. Great alternatives,” Trump said, adding that the ruling opened the door for him to go in “probably a direction that I should have gone in the first time.”
Sandown Stud Offer Tempting Trio At Premier Sale
Sandown Stud have a storied history of producing top class Southern African-bred thoroughbreds
Sandown Stud has been enjoying a fine run of success this season. Not only did the farm’s talented graduate Rodeo Drive capture the Gr 2 Mike De Kock Ipi Tombe Challenge, but the Sandown Stud bred Royal Invitation captured the Racing240 Sun Chariot Handicap.
Yet another classy individual bred by Sandown is Outlaw King, winner of this season’s Gr 2 SplashOut Cape Merchants. A son of Rafeef and the Greys Inn mare Way Of Escape, Outlaw King went on to finish a close third in the recent Gr 1 World Pool Cape Flying Championship and he has now earned more than R1.624 million in prize money.
The farm’s great season can be clearly seen in the NHRA statistics. Sandown is seventh on the Leading Breeders’ premiership for 2025-2026, despite the farm being represented by fewer runners than any other farm in the top ten. Sandown’s AEPR (Average Earnings Per Runner) of R72 531 is the highest of any stud farm in the top ten list for the current season.
Sandown’s James Armitage will be bringing three well-bred yearlings to the 2026 Premier Yearling Sale, and he had the following comments on the trio:
Lot 113: f Jet Dark – Sweet Repeat
From the first crop of five-time Gr1 winning champion Jet Dark, this filly is out of a winning full-sister to 2018-2019 South African Horse Of The Year Do It Again and 3/4 sister to leading 2026 Gr 1 World Sports Betting Cape Town Met contender See It Again. The latter ran a close third in the recent Gr 1 L’Ormarins King’s Plate. This is a scopey, quality filly who is athletic.
Lot 181: c Twice Over – Cavivar
By the sire of such stars as Do It Again, Double Superlative and See It Again, this colt is out of Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship runner up Cavivar, a daughter of boom broodmare sire Var. This is the family of champions Bless My Stars and Model Man among others. This is a good looking and well-balanced colt with depth, substance and quality.
Lot 265: c Twice Over -In Your Time
By a four-time Gr 1 winning champion, this colt hails from one of the best families in the stud book. His dam is a full-sister to Lady’s Bracelet Listed winner Sovereign Secret and also a three-parts sister to the Dynasty sired champion Bela-Bela.

Well bred Sherifflawfulmoses Has A Great Story Behind His Name
Lot 59 at the BSA Cape Yearling Sale on Sunday has a fine pedigree and a most interesting name, Sherifflawfulmoses.
He is by Varsfontein Stud’s champion freshman sire Erik The Red out of a Gimmethegreenlight mare called Rapid Charge, who is a full-brother to the top class Surcharge, who won the Gr 1 Daily News 2000 before being purchased by an overseas owner, renamed Yulong Prince and going on to win a Gr 1 in Australia.
Pietermaritzburg resident and long-time passionate racing fan Ross Payne is behind the naming of the colt, who is named in honour of another passionate Pietermaritzburg racing man.
Most would be wondering in what complex way such a name would be honouring somebody.
But believe it or not that is in fact the honoured person’s actual registered birth name, “Sheriff Lawful Moses”.
Ross recounts the full story:
The real “Sheriff Lawful Moses” is a retired gentleman in his mid-seventies. He is a loose- limbed fellow with the gait of someone at peace with himself and with the world around him. … He was once the head painter at St John’s DSG, a private girls’ school within walking distance of Scottsville Racecourse.
Sheriff, whom I first met when I joined the staff at the school as Transport Manager in 2001, is the most lovable of human beings. He is kind, humble and friendly, with a roguish sense of humour. … I instantly warmed towards him when I discovered that he was the only sensible staff member at the school who shared my Love of Horse Racing.
I had always promised Sheriff that if I ever won the “Lotto”, I’d buy a racehorse for him, rename it SHERIFFLAWFULMOSES ( Yes, I checked his identity document and that is indeed his full name), apply for a set of colours for him and pay the training fees while it was in a trainer’s yard.
Such a scenario didn’t materialise ; and just under two years ago, I was inspired to contact my favourite stud farm, Varsfontein, with an unusual appeal. … Please would they name a youngster for my friend, Sheriff Lawful Moses.
In a magnanimous gesture, Susan Rowlett, part-owner of Varsfontein, acquiesced to my somewhat strange request, relayed to her by Carl and Amanda de Vos, the pair who manage the day-to-day running of the stud farm.
And so it came to pass that in November 2024 a broodmare called RAPID CHARGE gave birth to a foal which was then named, SHERIFFLAWFULMOSES.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Sheriff Lawful Moses could one day lead in a victorious Sherifflawfulmoses at Hollywoodbets Scottsville!
King Harald To Reign At Turffontein
King Harald is well treated at the weights on Thursday and can record his second career victory (JC Photos)
A Graduation Plate is the highlight of the Turffontein Inside eight-race meeting on Thursday.
King Harald is the best weighted male in the race and is only 1kg under sufferance with the best weighted runner, A Bit Of Class, who returns from a layoff of close to five months and might need it. King Harald sat handy in the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas last time and looked set to run a big race as he had seemingly traveled well in a handy position. However, he finished 7,85 lengths back, although that could be good enough to win this race, considering he is 6,5kg better off with rest of the field if A Bit Of Class is taken out. King Harald is by Erik The Red, who was a sprinter, but his dam by Caesour won two races, both over 1600m, and she placed second in a Gr 3 over 1800m, so he should get this trip. King Harald is drawn wide in seven which is a concern. Bristol Hercules has always struck as having some class and this consistent sort should be right there again over a trip he will enjoy from a middle draw. Golden Operator has some class and the best is unlikely to have been seen of him yet as he has only had four career starts. He will say the trip on pedigree and from draw five out of seven should make a bold bid, although it is his second run after a layoff. Zip Code should be ideally distance suited and from pole position should be running on well. Sigfrid Swing and Opera fan look a bit outclassed here. Bit Of Class has caught the eye before and if anywhere near her best she can earn and if at her best after the layoff she will go close, but the race fit horses are preferred.
The first leg of the Pick 6 is a Maiden Juvenile Plate over 1000m. Queen Leila finished close to a promising sort in Griselda on debut in a small field and could be the one to beat. First-timer The Bachelorette is by William Longsword out of Gr 1-winning Trippi mare For The Lads. First-timer Elusive Dragon is by Elusive Fort out of a Gimmthegreenlihjt mare. Irish Wilma was not disgraced on debut behind the promising Secretary Bird when beaten by 8,65 lengths. Love Not War is by Act Of War and is out of a twice-winning Oratorio speedster.
The second leg of the Pick 6 is a Maiden over 1450m. Emerald Countess was not disgraced last time and the form of that race has worked out exceptionally well, but she does have a tricky draw. Palace Script can go close if repeating her last start over course and distance, but she will have to overcome a wide draw again. Emerald Forge is usually thereabouts and should earn again if able to overcome a tricky draw. First-timer Court Action is by Legislate out of a Caesour mare and is a half-sister to a horse who won her first to starts. Amaze Me has shown some ability and has a fair draw.
In the sixth race over 1600m, a MR 70 Handicap, Libeccio is often thereabouts and has a good opportunity here from a good draw over a suitable trip. Pretty Analia has a wide draw but is capable of a strong finish from off the pace and she should go close. Mattiazo has the form to be a contender here if able to overcome a wide draw as she proved last time she both enjoys this trip and is off a competitive mark. Unsolved Riddle is capable of better than last time if he gets better luck in running. The versatile Zoombomber has a good draw and is capable of being in the shake up.
In the seventh over 1600m, a MR 84 Handicap over 1600m, Fire Storm won his maiden well when stepped up second time out to 1400m and can follow up off a reasonable opening handicap mark of 84 from a good draw. Never Never Land is in fine form and should be right there again from a good draw over a trip he should get. Chieftan’s Shield has improved to an honest sort who will always be a threat as he is capable of finding a resolute finish, but he does have a tough draw. Palace Attack has the form to be a contender from a good draw and will probably enjoy the step back down in trip. Player has been a bit off form but is only one point higher than his last winning mark and could be a contender if bouncing back.
In the last race over 1450m Brigitte Ann is knocking on the door and is a big runner here having relished the step up to this trip last time, although her draw of six out of eleven is not straight forward. Major Arcana went close behind a promising sort in Golden Operator on debut and ran against a good field next time out, which included Grand Empire and Splittheeights, when well beaten. He returns from a layoff of close to four months but will be a runner with Craig Zackey up, who will also help him overcome a tricky draw. Lance Alot is honest and capable of earning here. Nebraska ran well last time and can earn again. Frankie Farenheit is capable of earning here.
In the first race over 1700m the long time maiden Royale Jacket has a fine chance to get off the mark.
In the second over 1000m Catfish and Ruby Whisper should fight it out with preference for the former as he has a good draw.
Constitution Hill Retired From Jumps Racing, Flat Career Beckons
Constitutional Hill’s sensational run at Southwell last Friday helped connections make the right decision ( Picture: Mike Egerton/PA Wire)
Horse And Hound
Constitution Hill has been withdrawn from the Champion Hurdle and will start the “next chapter” of his career.
Trainer Nicky Henderson announced the end of the racing star’s jumps career today (25 February), with his future runs expected to be on the Flat.
Although the horse will not be racing at next month’s Cheltenham Festival (10 to 13 March), he will make an appearance “to give all his National Hunt supporters the chance to say goodbye”.
Constitution Hill, owned by Michael Buckey, won his first 10 starts under Rules including the 2023 Champion Hurdle. But three falls from four starts over hurdles prompted a change of tactics.
The nine-year-old headed to Southwell on Friday (20 February), where he made a scintillating Flat debut on the all-weather with Oisin Murphy in the saddle. The big question since has been whether connections would target a reclamation of the Unibet Champion Hurdle at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, or if Constitution Hill would switch codes.
Mr Henderson said today that he and Mr Buckley have “spent a lot of time soul-searching and thinking” about the horse’s future, and have concluded that “he will not be running in the Unibet Champion Hurdle”.
“Last Friday night was for us all a magical occasion and we so appreciated his popularity and the love and admiration everybody showed to Conrad, as he is fondly called here. It was a terrific night for him, us, and I believe British horse racing.”
Mr Henderson added that he and Mr Buckley did not feel it would be fair to ask the horse and his regular jockey Nico de Boinville to race again over hurdles.
“He showed on Friday night that he has another career in front of him that could possibly take us all to new playing fields.
“I would like to thank the thousands of Constitution Hill’s supporters and admirers that have shared their sentiments with us and advice on how we should proceed, and I would have to say the poll was as near 50/50 as you could get.”
He added: “This is a sad day for a lot of us, particularly the National Hunt fraternity that would have liked to have seen Constitution Hill try to regain his crown and sad for all here especially Nico, who has spent so much time trying to iron out our jumping issues.
“However he leaves the jumping world sound and happy and ready for the next chapter. It has been a staggering journey so far and Michael has had to endure some dark days but of course enjoyed the enormous highs and thrills of an extraordinary horse.”
Constitution Hill will parade at Cheltenham racecourse on Champion Hurdle day (Tuesday, 10 March).
Today's Question
Which jockeys hold the record for the most Melbourne Cup wins?
The picture is of one of the jockeys
Today’s Question Answer

Bobby Lewis (1902, 1915, 1919, 1927) and Harry White (1974, 1975, 1978, 1979) won the race on four occasions and are the only jockeys to have done so.
