Steven And Jessica Jell Have A Star In America
Laurelin powers home in a Gr 2 at Saratoga on Saturday to make it five wins from five starts for owners Steven and Jessica Jell (Picture: NYRA)
Steven and Jessica Jell’s newly formed Newstead Stables LCC has had a flying start to their ownership career in the USA led by the unbeaten Laurelin, who made it five from five on Saturday at Saratoga when easily winning the Gr 2 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Oaks Invitational Stakes over a mile and one-and-half furlongs on the turf.
Newstead Stables formed last year and four of their five runners have won and in total they have returned nine wins and six seconds from 25 starts for earnings of US$934,883.
Ironically their only non-winner is the SA-bred Gimmethegreenlight champion Gimme A Nother, but she has notched up two Gr 2 seconds and a Gr 3 second and in just four starts has accumulated US$139,787.
The Irish-bred Laurelin was purchased on behalf of the Jells by Form Bloodstock at the Goffs Ireland Orby Sale in 2023 for €160,000.
She is by the French-bred Zarak out of the Irish-bred Cape Cross mare Bari. The latter won only once but is a half-sister to Gr 2 winner Thomas Hobson (Doncaster Cup winner) and to a Listed winner.
Laurelin is trained by Graham Motion and started her career with a 1,5 length victory in a Maiden at Belmont last October over a mile and one-and-a-half furlongs on the turf, despite being bumped at the start and coming five wide into the straight.
She then ran in the Black Type Tepin Stakes over a mile at Aqueduct five weeks later and rallied well before closing late to win by half-a-length.
Her next run was in the Listed Memories Of Silver Stakes over the same course and distance on April 27 this year and from draw one she had to come from the tail of the field but got up by a neck.
In her next start on 27 June in the Black Type Penn Oaks over a mile at Penn National she came four wide off the bend and under a drive won by one-and-a-quarter lengths.
On Saturday she was second favourite behind Gr 1 Belmont Oaks third-placed Opulent Restraint (Dubawi).
Laurelin is a striking filly with plenty of substance and jumping from the widest draw in the six horse field she found a one out and two back position with cover provided by Opulent Restraint, who was racing on the quarters of the pacemaker. She moved around the front pair on the final turn and ran on to win easily by 1,75 lengths from a running on Evershed with Opulent Restraint a lucky third as the next best runner Go Go Boots was hampered late. Listed winner and Gr 2 runner up Totally Justified was fifth and Gr 3 winner Sigh No More was beaten 3,75 lengths in last place.
Kendrick Carmouche has ridden Laurelin in all of her starts and her career earnings are now US$571,250.
Newstead Stables other winners have been Brazilian-bred For Flying, Kentucky-bred Royal Wintour and British-bred Marian Cross, all trained by Graham Motion.
For Flying, who is by Drosellmeyer out of the Brazilian-bred Elusive Quality mare Table Mountain, is a five-year-old mare now and this stalwart has had a Gr 3 second and a Gr 3 fourth this year for Newstead, having had two Allowance claiming victories for them last year. She was a Gr 1 winner in Brazil when owned by Haras Old Friends, who also bred her.
Royal Wintour is by Demarchelier out of Royal Academy mare Quiet Royal and was purchased for US$95,000 by Form Bloodstock at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. June 2YOs & Horses of Racing Age Sale 2023. This four-year-old filly has won once in six starts and has had two seconds.
Marian Cross (Zoustar (AUS) – Cross Pattee (IRE), by Oasis Dream (GB)) won one race for Newstead Stables last year before being sold on.

Isivunguvungu And Beach Bomb Disappoint At Colonial Downs
Beach Bomb can only manage fifth place as favourite in the Gr 2 Beverly D Stakes at Colonial Downs on Saturday as Charlene’s Dream (Qurbaan) wins impressively after going fast from the start (via youtube)
At Colonial Downs on Saturday the Graham Motion-trained South African-bred pair Isivunguvungu and Beach Bomb ran disappointing respective races.
The Narrow Creek Stud-bred Hollywood Racing-owned What A Winter gelding Isivunguvungu ran in the US$150,000 Van Clief Stakes over five-and-a-half furlongs and was one of the fancied runners. It was initially encouraging to see him settling well in a position off the pace within striking distance as he has a terrific turn of foot but tends to be a bit headstrong. Fans were no doubt anticipating him mowing the field down having seemingly preserved his energy, but instead he found little and could only manage sixth place.
It could only be interpreted as a flat run and this view was possibly confirmed when the Drakenstein Stud homebred Lancaster Bomber mare Beach Bomb failed to fire as the favourite in the US$500,000 Beverly D Stakes over one mile and one-and-a-half furlongs. She lay in third place behind two runaway pacemakers, but one of the latter managed to stay on to win and Beach Bomb, after making up some ground, faded late into a disappointing fifth place.
The two runs has put a dampener on the Breeders Cup aspirations of the SA-bred pair.
However, it will be interesting to hear how they pulled up, because they did not seem themselves and can hopefully bounce back.

The Mano Panduram-owned-and-trained Global Impact gives stallion Global View a double, brought home by the rising star Mxolisi Mbuto (Candiese Lenferna Photography)
Cape Breeders
Moutonshoek’s inform stallion The United States came up with a pair of winners at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
The son of Galileo had also enjoyed success at Turffontein the day before, where his daughter Teo Torriatte won for a sixth time.
The United States colt Clintostar overcame considerable greeness in running when he won Sunday’s Tote For The Win Maiden Plate (1600m).
Under a great ride from Callan Murray, the three-year-old stuck his head down where it mattered most and got up to win narrowly.
Trained by Garth Puller, Clintostar races for Dj Jazzy D Racing (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mr C Mooloo) & Mrs S C Sylvester.
Bred by Riethuiskraal Stud, Sunday’s winner is out of the Trippi mare Sao Paulo and is thus bred on the same cross as G2 winner Sheela.
The United States is also the sire of Dark Matter, a ready winner of Sunday’s Gallop Form Class 4 (F and M) (1000m). Under Tristan Godden, three-year-old Dark Matter romped home to win by over three lengths for the Hill stable. Bred by Mr Bundhun, the promising filly made it back to back wins on Sunday, with Dark Matter having won two of just four starts.
Owned by Preggie Somasundram, Dark Matter is out of the Where’s That Tiger mare Perfect Tigress.
The United States, who shares his sire Galileo with the likes of Frankel, Teofilo and Australia, is from one of the hottest families in the stud book.
His full-sister Salsa is the dam of this season’s G1 Paddy Power Pretty Polly Stakes/G1 Qatar Nassau Stakes winner Whirl, with Whirl currently second favourite for the 2025 G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Another star three-year-old hailing from this family is Henri Matisse, winner of the G1 Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas). The latter’s third dam is Mill Princess, the fourth dam of The United States.
The latter has eight lots on offer at the August Two Year Old Sale, including a full-brother (Lot 278) to Teo Torriatte.
Ascot Stud’s successful resident stallion Global View enjoyed a double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Sunday.
The son of Galileo had five runners on the day, and none of his five starters finished worse than fourth.
Global View’s first success on Sunday came when his three-year-old daughter Pepper Tree romped home to a convincing success in the fourth race.
Under Kobeli Lihaba, the Warwick/Weiho Marwing trained filly stormed home to claim the Race Coast Maiden Plate (F and M) (1750m) by nearly three lengths.
Bred by Ascot Stud, Pepper Tree, who races for Mr Koekemoer, was making just her fourth start on Sunday.
Out of the Rich Man’s Gold mare Coral Tree, Sunday’s winner was an R80 000 purchase from the 2024 National Yearling Sale.
Global View is also the sire of Global Impact, who won Sunday’s Online Form Guide www.gallop.co.za Class 5 (1400m).
Trained and owned by Mano Pandaram, the six-year-old stayed on strongly, under Mxolisi Mbuto, to score by just over a length and a quarter.
Now a four time winner, Global Impact was bred by the Missing U Syndicate.
His sire Global View, whose progeny include multiple G1 winning champion Dave The King, shares his legendary sire Galileo with the mighty Frankel. The latter came up with his 38th G1 winner when his son El Cordobes won the G1 Resorts World Casino Sword Dancer Stakes at Saratoga on Saturday.
Global View, South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2019-2020, has a single lot on offer at the August Two Year Old Sale.
Rachel Venniker rode a double for Michael Roberts at Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Scottsville meeting and were the only other double scorers besides The United States and Global View.
Team Asia Win Shergar Cup On Debut - Overall Standard Criticised
Haggas, the daughter of riding legend Lester Piggott, revealed her concerns after seeing French jockey Delphine Santiago win by a neck on her husband William’s Tenability. Haggas also expressed opposition to Ascot’s decision to replace the event’s Ladies team with one representing Asia.
Haggas said: “There are some bloody good riders here today, but the general feeling among trainers is that the standard of jockey is noticeably lower than usual. Hugh Bowman and Karis Teetan are very good riders but, without pointing any fingers, there are one or two who maybe shouldn’t be here.
“This is a good event, a great concept and a popular day, but trainers need to have confidence in the jockeys. I’m not trying to be cruel about anyone, but I think the organisers need to be a little more selective.
“I also think they should have kept the Ladies team. We’ve just had the Euros, which showed again how much people are into women’s sport, so why not keep the Ladies team.
“Once again both the team and jockey competitions went to the wire thanks to the draw formula that James Willoughby provides.
“As always with these things, there will be cases where lack of track experience and suchlike can play a part. We are sympathetic to that and will take all comments on board.”

Today’s Question Answer
Horse racing in India is over 200 years old. The first racecourse in the country was set up in Madras in 1777.[1] Today, India has a very well-established horse racing and breeding industry, the sport is conducted on nine racetracks by six racing authorities.
