Dayalan Chinsammy's Halcyon Day At The Big T
An ecstatic Dayalan Chinsammy (blue suit, right) leads in Confederate, who gave him a Gr 1 double on the day and a stakes race treble. (Candiese Lenferna Photography).
Dayalan Chinsammy said in the post race interview of the Gr 1 TAB SA Classic that some owners go a lifetime without having a Gr 1 winner, so somebody who had had two in one day had been “blessed”.
He and Trevelen Pillay must be extra blessed then as they had two Gr 1 winners (Fiery Pegasus and Confederate) and a Listed winner (Charming Cheetah) on Saturday at Turffontein Standside, while E Naicker and all of G, K and MM Nassif were all shareholders in both of the Gr 1 winners.
The Chinsammy red colours with black epaulettes became familar through the Joe Soma-trained five time Gr 1 winner Got The Greenlight, so it was fitting that Soma and those colours got the Gr 1 ball rolling for Chinsammy and Pillay on Saturday when Fiery Pegasus waltzed in by 4,50 lengths in the Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic under Richard Fourie.
She had sat in eighth place in the running after jumping from a draw of ten out of eleven in a race that was run in driving rain.
She went through the field like a hot knife through butter in the straight and hit the front at the 300m mark before drawing off to beat Olivia’s Way by 4,50 lengths, despite having drifted out to 17/2 in the betting.
Joe Soma has an incredible Gr 1 record for a small yard and this provided him with yet another.
Fiery Pegasus, a Captain Of All filly bred by Marsh Shirtliff’s Greenacre Trust together with Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, is a full sister to Shango, who won the Gr 2 Gauteng Guineas and later won the Gr 3 Hollywoodbets 2200 and the Gr 3 Lonsdale Stirrup Cup, both run at Hollywoodbets Greyville.
Shango’s liking for Hollywoodbets Greyville and his stamina capacity augurs well as Dayalan dreamed of becoming the first Indian owner to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July when Got The Greenlight was around and he twice went close, with a 0,80 length second in 2020 and a 0,70 length third in 2021.
Fiery Pegasus has been priced up as third favourite for the July in the first ante-post market, which Hollywoodbets have put out even before first nominations.
Dayalan will also have a July chance with the Fabian Habib-trained Moutonshoek Stud-bred Confederate, who also ran in his colours on Saturday.
This classy long-striding gelding by Fire Away displayed what Craig Zackey described as “the most amazing action ever” when leading from start to finish in the Gr 1 TAB SA Classic.
Fire Away clinched a Gr 1 exacta as The Alec Laird-trained Fire Attack ran on strongly for a 0,70 length second. Fire Attack won the Gr 2 SA Nursery last year and this was his third successive Graded runner up finish.
Legend Of Arthur dwelt at the jump and had to come from last. He did well to stay on for a 4,10 length third, 0,40 lengths ahead of Grey Jet, who stayed on well from midfield. The Gr 2 TAB Gauteng Guineas winner Parisian Walkway was in second place in the running and chased gallantly in the straight, but became one paced late and was overtaken for third spot late in the race, finishing a five length fifth.
Fire Attack is shorter in the Hollywoodbets Durban July betting than Confederate as he looks to have a stouter female line. Confederate is out of a mare by speed influence Danehill Dancer.
Fiery Pegasus’ full ownership is Messrs J R Blumberg,D Chinsammy,R G Coppin,E Naicker,B M Nassif, G, K & M M Nassif,Mr B & Mrs K Ncube,MGAS Bloodstock, Kisten Pillay Racing (Trevelen).
Confederate’s full ownership is D Chinsammy, W G de Koker, E Naicker, G J Nassif, J Nassif, G, K & M M Nassif,Tri-Deal Sixteen CC (Nom: Z L Nassif)&TKP Racing (Nom: Trevelen Pillay).
Trevelen Pillay was not an owner of Confederate in his previous start as he has just recently bought out some partners who wanted out.
Fiery Pegasus cost R330,000 at the BSA National Yearling Sale, while Confederate cost R280,000 at the BSA August Sale.
Those prices did not match the R500,000 paid for the Robyn Klaasen-trained Clifton Stud-bred New Predator colt Charming Cheetah, who produced a strong late run under Rachel Venniker to win at odds of 66/1 and give Venniker a quick Listed double.
The full ownership of Charming Cheetah is Messrs D Chinsammy, S S Pooe & TKP Racing (Nom: Trevelen Pillay).
This is a most interesting filly as she is from one of the best families in the South African stud book, which started with the import by Anthony Kalmaonson of Varsfontein Stud of the British-bred Lucky Libra. The latter was a tall and leggy mare whose three wins included a hurdles race over two-and-a-half miles, yet she became the forerunner of a family full of speed. Her Jungle Cove daughter Enchanting became a matriarch of speed. Enchanting produced the brilliant sprinter Harry’s Charm and her descendants include the legendary sprinter National Currency.
It is exciting times for Dayalan Chinsammy and Trevelen Pillay and the other partners in these three horses.
Tarry Back In The Gr 1 Winner's Enclosure
Craig Zackey salutes as Cosmic Speed gives him a Gr 1 double (Candiese Lenferna Photography).
Sean Tarry bounced back to Gr 1 winning ways when Querari gelding Cosmic Speed won the Gr 1 weight for age Wilgerbosdrift HF Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes over 1600m at Turffontein Standside on Saturday to give Craig Zackey a Gr 1 double.
The win was not surprising as this gelding had stayed on in eyecatching fashion in the Gr 3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes over 1400m in his last start in January and although his dam only won over 1200m she was by stamina influence Silvano.
His pedigree is very much a Maince Chance Farms one with sire Querari and damsire Silvano both being German-breds.
The hot favourite Main Defender finished unplaced, but to the relief of his backers was declared a non-runner.
The stipendiary steward report stated:”A race review was called into the start of this race with regards to MAIN DEFENDER (G Lerena) in stall gate 5. The Stewards established that as the start was effected, and this gelding launched itself from the starting stalls, its muzzle was caught in the grill of the left front gate as it opened, and its head was turned as a result. The Handler was slow to release the head of MAIN DEFENDER because of this. The Stewards reviewed this incident from various angles and at various speeds, and were comfortable to the requisite degree that MAIN DEFENDER had been prevented from starting on equal terms and its chances in this race had been materially affected as a consequence of this incident. Consequently, MAIN DEFENDER was declared to be a non-runner in terms of the provisions of Rule 61.5.10.2.”
Frontrunner Texas Red set the fractions with the Sean Tarry-trained Cosmic Speed lying one out and one back alongside Barbaresco, who was in the box seat.
It was clear at the top of the straight that Cosmic Speed had plenty in the tank and he shook off Greaterix, who had made good initial inroads, before passing Texas Red at the 300m mark.
He ran out a 1,75 length winner from Texas Red with the KZN raider Imilenziyokududuma relishing the long Turffontein straight and staying in for a 2,50 length third at 50/1 odds, a head in front of Greaterix, with Barbaresco in fifth place.
Heinrich Kuhn, Mr Krishen Naidoo & The Hon Mr Justice G N Kruger own Cosmic Speed and it was a first Gr 1 win for the latter pair.
The key to the win might have been a gallop the Tarry team were able to get into Cosmic Speed on the Tuesday 12 days before this race when Craig Zackey and Ryan Munger were asked by Sean to get to the track very early in the morning. They were able to just keep the horse ticking over after getting that important workout in on a soft but manageable track in between all the rain interrupted days lately.
Cosmic Speed has plenty of speed too and finished second in last season’s Gr 1 Gold Medallion over 1200m at Hollywoodbest Scottsville, but the Golden Horse Sprint is a Gr 2 these days so it seems more likely Cosmic Speed will be targeted at the Gr 1 wfa Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge over 1600m.
Cosmic Speed is in fact 12/1 in the Hollywoodbets ante-post betting for the Hollywoodbets Durban July.
Craig Zackey's Ride Of The Season
The Gr 1 SA Classic saw a fine victory for the Fabian Habib-trained Fire Away gelding Confederate and for jockey Craig Zackey it was something of a chance win.
However, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and produced possibly the ride of the season.
Zackey did not have a ride in this race by the 11 o’ clock deadline for declarations on Monday 17 February. The trainer is given two hours after that deadline to find a jockey.
For a jockey not to be declared by the deadline time in a Gr 1 would probably mean the connections did not have one of the favourites and were waiting to see which top jockeys would be available after all the other horses had been declared.
It would be unusual for the country’s current leading jockey to still be available after the deadline.
However, between Craig’s agent, his father Simon, and Fabian Habib they ensured the leading jockey was not sitting in the stands.
If there is such a thing as a perfect ride then Craig Zackey went close in this race.
An old racing adage states that if a horse is able to run a race in a certain time then he or she will be hard to beat.
In the Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic there was a decent pace and an impressive 4,75 length win for the Joe Soma-trained Fiery Pegasus in a time of 114,71 seconds.
Any jockey wishing to apply the aformentioned adage would then have used Fiery Pegasus’s time in the soft conditions as the time to aim for.
Zackey led from start to finish on Confederate and the time recorded was 114,70 seconds, an almost identical time, and indeed the favourite Fire Attack was not able to catch him with his late charge.
Zackey said going down to the start had given him a lot of confidence.
He described Confederate as a huge horse, “nice and strong”, with “the most amazing action ever”, so felt he just had to be fit and ready enough to have a huge chance.
He had planned to get cover, but the horse had been overdoing it a bit down the back straight and he took the initiative to stay in front and allow him to stride out.
An expert analysis of the sectional timing of this race would be interesting as the result proved Zackey had gone at exactly the right tempo, with a charging Fire Attack getting within 0,70 lengths of him at the line but never looking likely to catch him.
Beach Bomb Does It For South Africa

Cape Breeders
Gelykfontein Stud’s blue-blooded young sire Wild Coast got a handsome boost to his page on Saturday.
Wild Coast’s top-class half-sister Beach Bomb, winner of the 2023 G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas and 2024 G1 Cartier Paddock Stakes, added to her impressive resume when she made all to win the G3 The Very One Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
The daughter of Lancaster Bomber was given a beautifully rated steer from the front by Luis Saez and led past every pole in Saturday’s G3 feature.
A latest eighth, but not beaten far, in the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, Beach Bomb was ridden positively by Saez.
Beach Bomb covered the opening three-quarters of a mile in 1:16.05, with Saez keeping his powder dry, waiting for the right moment to up the tempo. With a shake of the reins from Saez entering the last of three turns, Beach Bomb began to sprint, had a bit of a break on her rivals entering the final furlong and proved a comfortable winner.
Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, the blue-blooded Beach Bomb has won five of 12 starts. Prior to her Breeders Cup run, she had finished runner-up in the Violet Stakes and third in the G2 Rodeo Drive Stakes.
She is one of five black type performers produced by dual Equus Champion Beach Beauty, whose 17 victories included two runnings of the G1 Garden Province Stakes, two runnings of the G1 Paddock Stakes as well as the 2014 G1 Klawervlei Majorca Stakes.
Beach Beauty, who won 12 graded races during her remarkable career, has not only produced the dual G1 winning Beach Bomb, but also two other graded stakes winners in the form of Amanzimtoti (G2 Western Cape Fillies Championship) and the latter’s high-class full-brother Wild Coast.
The latter, who stood his first season at Gelykfontein in 2024, showed his class when he won the G2 World Sports Betting Guineas where Wild Coast, a son of former South African Champion sire Trippi, accounted for the likes of Golden Ducat, Sachdev and Frosted Gold.
Ferraris Oh So Close To HK Classic Cup Glory
Brenton Avdulla jubilates after Rubylot’s stunning win (HKJC).
In Hong Kong in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic over 1800m at Sha Tin on Sunday Luke Ferraris’s mount My Wish looked likely to add this race to his win in the HK$13 Million Classic Mile as he produced a strong late run to go clear. However, the David Hayes-trained Rubylot burst out of the pack to nab him late and win by three-quarters of a length.
Read The HKJC Report on the race below:
Leo Schlink
Brenton Avdulla continued a blossoming season by dominating at Sha Tin on Sunday (2 March), crowning a stellar display with victory in the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Cup (1800m) on David Hayes-trained Rubylot before piloting emerging HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) hopeful Enthralled to an important triumph.
Avdulla, 34, moved into third place in the Hong Kong jockeys’ championship with 29 wins behind injured Zac Purton (84) and Hugh Bowman (42) after taking riding honours with three successive wins after also striking with Young Champion in the Class 2 Tai Hing Handicap (1400m) for John Size.
“Nice day. I had four rides, I thought three of them were good, competitive rides and they’re the three that have lobbed. They all had nice runs in transit, got the job done,” Avdulla said.
“Hayesey’ had the horse (Rubylot) spot on. He had a nice run through and I was confident at the 250 (metres) he was going to get the job done. I’ve got no doubt if he drew a gate in the (Hong Kong Classic Mile) he would have gone very close (to winning).
“I was just back in No Man’s Land and he still ran on well, so I was confident enough to stick with him to come to 1800m. I thought the draw (barrier eight) was a little bit tricky again (today) and, ideally, I would have been a bit closer but it just didn’t look any good after 50 (metres), so I just rode him quiet and my only decision was whether I go inside Mickley or around him.
“I just felt I was going good enough to get Mickley out of the way when I cornered and to his credit the horse found the line really well.”
Crowning a glorious eight days, David Hayes immediately set sights on the BMW Hong Kong Derby with Rubylot on 23 March when the Australian horseman will attempt to win the Classic for a second time.
Leading the 2024/25 Hong Kong trainers’ championship with 35 wins, Hayes last Sunday (23 February) saddled HK$13 million G1 Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup (1400m) victor Ka Ying Rising before claiming the DBS x Manulife Million Challenge at Happy Valley on Wednesday (26 February) with Soleil Fighter and then striking this afternoon with Rubylot.
Rubylot steamed from the tail of the field at the 400m to overhaul Hong Kong Classic Mile (1600m) winner My Wish (Luke Ferraris) and score by three quarters of length in 1m 46.29s with fast-finishing Johannes Brahms (Karis Teetan) half a length further back in third.
In clinching the second leg of the Four-Year-Old Classic Series, Rubylot improved his record to six wins and eight placings from 18 starts for his owners, the HK Football Club Horse Racing Syndicate, while taking his earnings to HK$15.5 million.
Settling second last, Rubylot tracked Mickley (Ryan Moore) into the straight before angling into the clear and accelerating powerfully with a race-best 22.30s final 400m sectional to quickly settle the contest and atone for a luckless sixth in the Hong Kong Classic Mile.
Dual Hong Kong champion trainer, Hayes last won the BMW Hong Kong Derby in 2003 with Elegant Fashion, who was the first filly to triumph in Hong Kong’s most coveted race since Corvette in 1976.
“It would be very nice (to win another BMW Hong Kong Derby Derby). It’s been a long time. It’s one of the races everyone in Hong Kong wants to win,” Hayes said. “To my eye, he (Rubylot) was the strongest late and that’s a good sign stepping up to the 2000m. Being a Rubick you were always concerned, but he’s out of a Dubawi mare and stoutly-bred on the dam side.
“You always look at this race (Hong Kong Classic Cup) to find the closers and that’s a good pointer to the Derby. I don’t think anyone ran home faster than him today. It was a brilliant sectional.”
A two-time winner in England for Sir Michael Stoute, Size-trained Enthralled showcased his staying potential with a last-to-first win in the Class 3 Yan Tin Handicap (2000m) to earn a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million and impressing Avdulla.
“I actually said to John after I first rode him that if you had another two months up your sleeve, he’d be one of the live chances in the Derby,” Avdulla said. “So, he’s had to get him there quickly. It’s not often you see John give them only a couple of trials and then run them in a mile.
“I think he’s a good quality horse and if he makes his way into the Derby field, he’ll be a live hope for sure.”
Size joined Hayes and Ricky Yiu in scoring a double with Young Champion’s impressive display before James McDonald completed a brace with victory on Dennis Yip’s Fast Network in the Class 3 Yau Oi Handicap (1200m).
McDonald opened his account on Lucky Fionn in the Class 4 Yan Oi Tong Cup Handicap (1400m) for Yiu, who also combined successfully with James Orman and The Concentration in the Class 5 Lung Yat Handicap (1200m).
Orman was elated after notching his first Sha Tin victory – four days after the Queenslander posted his first win at Happy Valley on Yiu-trained Charming Babe on Wednesday (26 February).
“It’s pretty surreal, I’m still pinching myself from Wednesday to be honest with you,” Orman said after notching his second win from only six rides. “To be honest, I was pretty confident with this horse today because I know he’s only won one from 17 but he was one of the first horses I trialled when I got here and he trialled up really good against horses higher in the ratings.
“I galloped him on Thursday and I thought he would be really hard to beat. I was always going to get a good run from that alley (barrier two) and I got a good run through today.”
Justifying made a striking debut for Caspar Fownes when the three-year-old surged to a three and three-quarter length win in the Class 4 Fu Tai Handicap (1000m) under Luke Ferraris.
“He’s a very fast horse and he’s got a long way to go because he’s still quite immature. I gave him two trials and normally I’d give them a few more but he looked to be ready to come to the races. He’s a pretty straightforward horse, he showed a lot of speed and I think he’s quite exciting,” Fownes said of the Justify gelding.
Britney Wong slotted her 10th win of the season with Hayes-trained Ariel’s triumph in the Class 3 On Ting Handicap (1650m, dirt) before Blake Shinn and Benno Yung combined with well-backed Ballistic Win to clinch the Class 4 Po Tin Handicap (1200m) as Ellis Wong piloted Danny Shum’s Shanghai Style to victory in the Class 4 Sam Shing Handicap (1650m, dirt).
Hong Kong racing continues at Happy Valley on Wednesday night (5 March).

Georgie Girl is bred on a similar cross to Australian star, and G1 ATC Golden Slipper runner up, Best Of Bordeaux, who was sired by Snitzel and produced by the High Chaparral mare Chateau Cheval.
