Cosmic Speed won his seasonal reappearance in impressive style at Turffontein Standside on Saturday (JC Photos)
The Sean Tarry-trained Cosmic Speed made his awaited seasonal reappearance over 1160m at Turffontein Standside and fended off the decent Gr 3 winner Cymric to win by a cosy 0,60 lengths, although he did have the advantage of Trent Mayhew’s 1,5kg claim.
Tarry said 1200m to 1400m was the best trip for the three-year-old Querari gelding at present and when asked whether the Gr 1 Golden Horse Sprint would be his chief aim, he replied, “You know me, that meeting is normally something I focus on, so there is a reasonable possibility.”
He said about Saturday’s win, “He was idling behind them and quickened up like a good horse, he did what he needed to do. It was a good win.”
Tarry is known as The King Of Hollywoodbets Scottsville, having won a record 19 Gr 1s there.
Lucky Lad won the Golden Horse for him last season, but will be racing in Cape Town in the Gr 1 wfa Cape Flying Championship this season. He might stil be able to defend his Golden Horse title, but if he wins or goes close in the weight for age (wfa) Cape Flying or the wfa Gr 1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint he might be in for a further merit rating hike from his current 125, while he won the Golden Horse last season off a 121.
Querari gelding Cosmic Speed is currently merit rated 116 and might end up as Tarry’s chief Golden Horse runner this season.
He has already proved he likes Hollywoodbets Scottsville as he finished a 0,75 length second to stablemate Proceed in the Gr 1 Gold Medallion last season.
The latter is yet to be seen this season.
