The Jonsson Workwear Dingaans field is characterised this year by the entry of two Gr 1-winning fillies, The Barend Botes-trained record-breaking champion and dual Gr 1 winner Quid Pro Quo (Lance) and the Tony Peter-trained VJ’s Angel (Gimmethegreenlight).
One of their reasons for running there would be that in other races available at this time they would have to incur Gr 1-winning penalties.
However, they are not the only two fillies in the field.
The Brett Crawford-trained Fatal Flaw was twice a runner up to Quid Pro Quo and actually defeated VJ’s Angel in one of those races, the Gr 2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper over 1400m.
Fatal Flaw won the Gr 3 HSH Princess Charlene Starling Stakes over 1400m impressively last time out.
Runners in the Gr 3 Betway Fillies Mile on Betway Summer Cup day incur a Gr 3 penalty of 1kg so that might be reason for Fatal Flaw to be among the Dingaans entries.
Olivia’s Way also won a Gr 3 last time out, so that could be the reason for her appearance among the Dingaans entries.
Of course the females in the Dingaans also receive a 2,5kg gender allowance, which is probably an especially attractive allowance for a young filly.
However, all of this has left the Fillies Mile as there for the taking.
And the one who could do it is the Joe Soma-trained Fiery Pegasus.
This Captain Of All has got impressive formlines and yet has not gathered any penalties for Graded wins.
She went cloose last time out in the Gr 2 Betway Jo’Burg Spring Fillies And Mares Challenge over 1450m and before that had defeated the like of Andi’s Girl, a hardknocking older horse who duly won next time out, and World Of Alice, a classy three-year-old.
Fiery Pegasus lost by just 2,20 lengths when facing Quid Pro Quo in the Gr 1 Allan Robertson Championship over the too sharp 1200m.
Keep an eye out for the Gr 3 Betway Fillies Mile field, because she could be a stand out.
