Moutonshoek’s successful sire The United States is from a family which continues to produce top-class performers.
Over the weekend, this family was responsible for both Wingspan (2nd G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes) and Trinity College (2nd G3 Mongey Communications Eyrefield Stakes).
Classy three-year-old filly Wingspan, beaten by just two lengths in Saturday’s G1 feature, is a daughter of Dubawi and the Galileo mare Hydrangea. The latter, a full-sister to The United States, won four times including the 2017 G1 Coolmore Fastnet Rock Matron Stakes and the same year’s G1 Qipco British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.
Placed in a further six G1 races, Hydrangea earned £976,930 in prize money. Her daughter Wingspan had been beaten just a neck in the G2 Moyglare “Jewels” Blandford Stakes prior to Saturday, with the filly victorious in this year’s Listed Darley Irish EBF Hurry Harriet Stakes.
Wingspan’s close relative smart two-year-old Trinity College, a colt by Dubawi out of Hydrangea and The United States’ dual classic winning own sister Hermosa, had made a big impression earlier this year when romping home to a 12 length maiden win at Galway.
The blue blooded colt holds an entry for the 2025 G1 Tattersalls Irish 2000 Guineas.
The United States’ stellar family was once again to the fore on Tuesday when promising two-year-old Whirl won the G3 Staffordstown Stud Stakes at the Curragh. The recent Doncaster maiden winner had the inside draw and was able to dominate without having to set fast fractions. Nevertheless, she looked vulnerable when And So To Bed, Celtic Motif and her own stablemate, favourite Giselle, made it all but four in a line inside the final furlong. And So To Bed put her nose in front soon afterwards but Lordan got a great response from Whirl and she got back in front to score a shade cosily.
“Lovely filly,” said winning trainer Aidan O’Brien. “She’s another Wootton Bassett, she stays very well, is uncomplicated, and Wayne gave her a lovely ride.
A daughter of Wootton Bassett, Whirl is out of the Galileo mare Salsa, who is a full-sister to all of The United States, Hydrangea and Hermosa!
