Teetan To Ride And Nestadt Colours To Be Carried In Cox Plate

South African Jockey Academy graduate, the Mauritian-born Hong Kong-based Karis Teetan, will be riding the crack three-year-old Evaporate in Australia’s most prestigious weight for age race, the Gr 1 Cox Plate, which is to be run over 2040m at Moonee Valley in Melbourne on Saturday.
Big Johannesburg-based South African owner Larry Nestadt will also be represented in the race and his colours will be carried by the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained French-bred Wootton Basset five-year-old entire Royal Patronage.
Teetan’s mount Evaporate is trained by Ben, Will & Jd Hayes, the sons of Hong Kong-based trainer David Hayes and grandsons of the legendary Hall Of Fame trainer Colin Hayes.
Teetan likely landed the ride through his association with David Hayes in Hong Kong.
Teetan was ironically associated with the winner of last year’s Cox Plate, the Hong Kong-based Danny Shum-trained Romantic Warrior, in the early stages of that horse’s career and finished second in two Gr 1s on him.
The illness he suffered at the beginning of the 2022-23 season due to a serious thyroid condition contributed to him losing the ride on Romatic Warrior, who has to date won seven Gr 1s, including five in succession last season. His five Gr 1 wins on the trot started with the Cox Plate and ended with the Yasuda Kinen in Japan.
Teetan can make amends on Saturday for missing out on the Romatic Warrior success story.
James McDonald has ridden Romatic Warrior in all seven of his Gr 1 victories.
Romantic Warrior is a absent from Saturday’s line up, but McDonald will be aboard the Chris Waller-trained six times Gr 1-winning mare, the six-year-old Irish-bred Via Sistina (Fastnet Rock).
Evaporate only won his maiden in August after being highly tried as a two-year-old, but he followed that win with two more victories before winning a Gr 2 over 1600m at Moonee Valley on September 27
Last time out the New Zealand-bred Per Incanto gelding finished a 0,9 length third in the Gr 1 Caulfield Guineas.
Evaporate is one of two three-year-olds in the Cox Plate and he beat the other one, the James Cummings-trained Broadsiding, by 0,4 lengths in the Caulfield Guineas.
Teetan will have to deal with Evaporate’s tricky draw of six out of nine.
Nestadt’s all royal blue colours are familiar in South Africa and in Australia they are the same with the exception of them also having yellow epaulettes.
Nestadt is the chief owner in the French-bred Wootton Bassett five-year-old entire Royal Patronage, who is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
Royal Patronage made a stunning debut in Australia on September 7 when winning the Gr 2 Au$300,000 Tramway Stakes over 1400m at Randwick.
Royal Patronage sat handy behind a strong pace before quickening in fine style and winning by 1,25 lengths despite coming off a 462 day layoff.
Since then he has had three runs, including a third in a Gr 1 over 1600 at Randwick and a third in a Gr 3 over 1900m at Rosehill.
He was perhaps too handy in those two races from wide draws and from a better draw this time, barrier position four, he could possibly stalk and use the fine turn of foot he displayed on his Australian debut.
Royal Patronage has never won beyond 1700m, but he did finish second in the Gr 2 Dante over one mile and two-and-a-half furlongs at York, beaten 3,25 lengths by subsequent Epsom Derby winner Desert Crown.
As a two-year-old Royal Patronage won the Gr 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes over seven furlongs at York and the Gr 2 Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes over a mile at Newmarket. In the latter race he beat ill-fated Dubawi colt Caroebus. who went on to win the Gr 1 2000 Guineas and the Gr 1 St. James Palace Stakes.
Royal Patronage had a stint in the USA from July 2022 to June 2023 before Waterhouse spotted him at a Tattersalls horses in training sale.
Royal Patronage’s sire Wootton Bassett (Iffraaj) commands a fee of €200,000. Wootton Bassett was a high class racehorse, whose career unfortunately coincided with the same crop as Frankel’s, meaning he was limited to one Gr 1 victory. However, his stud record features 80 stakes performers and from that number 31 of his sons and daughters have won in Group/Graded company, with nine being successful at Gr 1 level.
Royal Patronage is a Melbourne Cup entry and victory on Saturday will give him an automatic berth. However, it would appear he is better suited to shorter than the 3200m journey of the Melbourne Cup.
Nestadt has had many big winners in SA, and has been part-owner of two Equus Horses Of The Year, the current holder Dave The King and the 2009/2010 Horse Of THe Year, Irish Flame, who carried his colours. The top class Flying The Flag gelding Flag Man is one of the current best to be carrying his colours in SA.

Prince Florian To Improve On The Polytrack
Ginger Delight, pictured winning on debut on the Highveld, has joined the Dean Kannemeyer yard and is tippped to win the last race (JC Photos)
Jack Milner (Tab4Racing)
A seven-race programme on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday sees some smallish fields, but the racing nevertheless looks quite competitive, although there are a few solid win and place betting opportunities.
However, trainer Dean Kannemeyer has always had a knack of knowing which horses to race on the Polytrack and he could come up trumps once in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1600m, where he sends out Prince Florian.
This three-year-old son of What A Winter had an eye-catching debut on the turf at Greyville last time where he ran on from near last on the turf track at Greyville to finish a 1.70-length fifth behind Got The Word over 1400m.
Nothing went right for the half-brother to Industrialstrength as he lost two lengths at the start, raced greenly throughout before putting it together late in the race.
That experience will have brought him on and with the additional 200m also sure to suit, he could prove too good for his opposition.
Craig Zackey takes the ride once again and they will jump from No 5 draw.
Tony Rivalland-trained Magma Magic could provide the main threat as he had some bad luck last time as he got into a bumping match late in the race couldn’t regather himself in time.
Importantly, with a set of blinkers fitted, he showed he enjoys racing from the front which could prove a valuable attribute on the Polytrack.
Rivalland could also get bettors off the mark in Race 1, a Maiden Plate for fillies and mares over 1000m, where he send out Vercingetorix filly Lady Of Vix. She made her debut over 1000m at HWB Scottsville in July and showed good pace before weakening into third, beaten 1.90-lengths.
The winner of that race, Icy Lancaster, has gone on to win a handicap recently and appears to have still more to come.
Jockey Mathew Thackeray rode her on debut and he is back in the irons once again, but will have to overcome No 9 draw.

Beaumont Sending A Variety To Breeze Up/Unbroken 2YO Sale
Lot 50 is a Captain Of All first foal out of a Master Of My Fate half-sister to Michaelmas winner Boundless Bash (Picture: CRS)
Cape Racing Sales Breeze Up & Unbroken 2yo Sale
Anton Shepherd’s Beaumont Stud is sending a couple of Breeze Up candidates to market on Sunday, 27 October 2024, along with five unbroken 2YOs. They are being offered at Cape Racing Sales’ upcoming auction, which will be staged at Hollywoodbets Durbanville.
Lot 50 is a Captain of All first foal out of Master of My Fate mare, Underthemistletoe, who is a half to Michaelmas Handicap winner, Boundless Bash.
Lot 59, World in Unison is also a first foal, being a One World filly out of Var mare, Boundless Deep. There is plenty of Black Type on the female side stretching back four generations.
Lot 74 is an unbroken 2YO by Canford Cliffs ex Jade Vine, a winner of six races. The stallion took out the G1 Irish Two Thousand Guineas during a distinguished racing career and has since sired 26 SWs from 757 runners.
Following immediately afterwards is Lot 75, an unnamed Futura filly out of the Vercingetorix mare, Jetrix. She is a first foal.
William Longsword is enjoying recent success with the high-class Back in Business and Gr1 Cape Flying Championship victor Dyce. Beamont is offering one of his sons as Lot 89, out of the 3x winning Philanthropist mare Outlander.
The United States (by Galileo) has produced a filly out of Pippi, a neat producer responsible for smart sprinter Melech and Captain Opie who have won a dozen races between them. Lot 92 can be viewed in stable B28.
Multiple Gr1 hero, Soqrat is an exciting newcomer to the breeding barns -currently, his oldest progeny are three-year-olds. Scatman (Lot 94) is one of his youngsters, out of Radiant Splendour, a Lope de Vega, an Aussie mare who won a couple of races. The second dam, Heavenly Glow was the Champion 3YO Filly in Oz during 2007/8 so there is considerable international substance to this page.
Beaumont Stud is also an agent for a Rafeef colt (Lot 68, named Kliptown) and a Canford Cliffs colt (Lot 100). Both mares will be familiar to racegoers – Kliptown’s dam, Freedom Charter won Gr3 races and was placed in Gr2’s in the Cape and KZN as a classy sprinter. She could be a potent match with Gr1 Computaform winning speedball, Rafeef.
The well-performed Qui Danzig mare, Six Blue Notes attained a place in the Gr1 Golden Slipper and Thekwini Stakes at Greyville as a smart juvenile and so Rockabilly is worth a careful check in stable C18.
The genial Shepherd will be on hand to answer any enquiries and assist with viewings before auctioneers Andrew Miller and Tom Hodgson start brandishing their gavels.

Woodhill Racing Send Six To The Breeze Up Sale
Lot 15 is a filly by Gold Standard out of a well related Querari mare (Picture: CRS)
Woodhill Racing | CRS Breeze Up And Unbroken 2 Year Old Sale
Glen Kotzen is an enduringly successful trainer with an incredible eye for purchasing inexpensive horses that compete at the highest level – just recall the exploits of Big City Life, Eyes Wide Open, Gold Standard, Princess Victoria, Lady Windemere and Cousin Casey to name a few recent examples.
His private Woodhill Racing operation, out near Paarl, takes on a slightly different guise in prepping six potentially exciting young’uns to be unveiled on the 27 October at Hollywoodbets Durbanville in the Cape Racing Sales Breeze Up.
Lot 15, Life of Leisure, is a Gold Standard filly ex La Collossa. She is a dam of just two foals to race and both won. The three year old has won two from three starts with Dean Kannemeyer. The second dam, La Calima, threw Los Colmos, a speedy eight-time winner and direct family of sire Lomitas who is the sire of our very own Silvano.
Lot 19 is a Rafeef filly out of Lip Service. Second dam, Lyrical Linda, a fabulous race mare, was a prolific winner between 1400m and 2000m with her career best achieved when triumphing in the G1 Garden Province Stakes. Family of Lance who produced Equus champion Quid Pro Quo. For his part, Rafeef has already sired 20 SW’s from only 207 runners so this is an attractive mating.
Lunar Descent is a very good looking Captain of All colt out of Lunar Landing. There is plenty of speed on the page and he will go through the ring as Lot 21.
Alpha World follows soon after as Lot 24 One World colt ex Mon Cherie is a young mare and a three part sister to Mill Queen as stakes winner. Met victor, One World has made the headlines breaking the SA record for freshman sire with his oldest progeny 3YO’s. One Stripe, Lion Rampart and All Out For Six shone as juveniles last term.
Lot 29 is an unnamed colt by USA stallion, Declarationofpeace out of a speedy mare that Kotzen trained to win five races, Our Destiny who got beat a short head in the Fillies Guineas. This is a family he knows well, second dam, Plumosa, a seven-time winner, also passed through his expert hands.
Woodhill Racing’s action will be done by Lot 42 when the chestnut colt, Safe Travel by good value sire, Elusive Fort ex Sapsan who is a half-sister to stakes winner Rocket Countdown goes under auctioneer, Andrew Miller’s hammer. He can be checked out in stable D24.
Glen Kotzen is happy to personally field enquiries on 021 869 8845. Alternatively email admin@woodhillracing.co.za to make viewing arrangements.
Gavin Lerena's Four-Timer Takes Strike Rate To 28.81%
Gavin Lerena clinches a four-timer as Andi’s Girl (Fire Away) wins comfortably and she also gives Mike and Adam Azzie a double. (JC Photos)
Gavin Lerena had seven rides at the Turffontein Inside track today for four wins and three seconds.
He had four successive winning rides on the Erico Verdonese-trained DJ Junior (Diesel Jet) in race 3, the Tony Peter-trained Basingstoke (Admiral Kitten) in race 4, the Mike and Adam Azzie-trained Kia Kaha (Var) in race 5 and the Azzie-trained Andi’s Girl (Fire Away) in race 7.
He reached the 50 win mark for the season on Kia Kaha and made it 51 on Andi’s Girl and he has done it at a strike rate of 28.81%.
He is now eleven behind leader Muzi Yeni in the national championship.
The Azzies were joined by Piere Strydom as double scorers on the day.
Strydom, who denied Lerena a fifth win when extracting a late burst from the Roy Magner-trained Queen Of Love (Rafeef) in tihe 8th race, is on 22 wins for the season at a strike rate of 27.85%.
The Azzie are on 12 wins at 24.49%.
Today's Question
The subject of the question is pictured.
Question: The Breeders Cup Classic is regarded by many as America’s greatest horse race, but the race which helped spawn it and which was the first truly international race in the world was the Washington DC International. Which horse was the inaugural winner of the Washington DC International and what associations did he have with South Africa?
FIELDS, Wednesday 23 OCTOBER
Hollywoodbets Greyville Poly
Today’s Question Answer
The inaugural running of the Washington DC International, at Laurel Park, Maryland in October 1952, drew a field of just seven, but among them the pioneering spirit was strong. International by name, international by nature.
Inaugural winner: Wilwyn, trained in Britain by John Waugh and ridden by Manny Mercer, won the first Washington DC International
Two horses came from Britain, one from Germany, one from Canada, three from the US, something that had never happened before. Yes, the Derby winner Papyrus had taken on Kentucky Derby winner Zev almost 30 years earlier, and the French horse Epinard had run four times in the US the following year, but neither tourist had been successful and the trickle of foreign participation had dried up to nothing. Now the taps were on again.
The new race was the visionary idea of Laurel’s manager John D Schapiro, who wanted to put his racecourse on the map, a map he unfolded wide.
Transporting horses by aeroplane had become much more straightforward – Papyrus and Epinard travelled by boat – and Schapiro sweetened his $50,000 prize-money pot with concessions for European runners: the race would be run on turf over a mile and a half, it would be a walk-up start (starting stalls had yet to reach Europe) and the costs of transport would be met. What Schapiro needed more than anything else was an overseas winner, to promote the venture, and his prayers were answered.
Wilwyn, trained in Newmarket by George Colling (and saddled by assistant John Waugh) and ridden by Manny Mercer, did win; the local hope Ruhe was second, Wilwyn’s compatriot Zucchero finished third and the German-trained Niederlander fourth.
Wilwyn featured in the Turf Talk question last week.
He was the first horse to be flown into South Africa after being was imported by Harry and Bridget Oppenheimer’s Mauritzfontein Stud in 1959.
That was the same year the Oppenheimer’s won their first July with Tiger Fish, who was by the first stallion they imported in 1951, Janus.
Four years after being imported Wilwyn was crowned South Africa’s Champion Sire, as a result of his top-class progeny, King Willow, Smash And Grab and Uncle Ben.
He became a fantastic broodmare sire too.
His daughters produced, among others, Sentinel, Hidden Magic, Faro and Canyon Creek.
Wilwyn’s son, Col. Pickering, is also the broodmare sire of the famous Horse Chestnut.
Wilwyn was a very successful sire not only in South Africa but in Britain and Europe and even Japan.
Before he was imported To South Africa for the price of £50,000 in 1959 he stood for six seasons in the UK.
There he bred the winners of the 1961 Yorkshire Oaks & Princess Royal Stakes (Tenacity), the 1958 Cherry Hinton Stakes winner (Fan light), and the 1958 Queen Anne Stakes Winner (Teynham).
In 1959 his son (Wildeal) who was imported to Japan when has dam was in foal to him went on to win the 1959 Japanese 2000 Guineas among a total of 5 major stakes races.
Wildeal would go on to be a successful sire in Japan producing many stakes winners and his classic winning son Date Tenryu won the Japanese St. Leger in 1970.
Tenacity would go on produce the brilliant filly Parthian Glance who not only repeated the feats of her dam by winning the 1966 Yorkshire Oaks she would also win the Ribblesdale Stakes and Park Hill Stakes.
